About us
The Ben Kinsella Trust is one of the UK’s leading anti-knife crime charities. We were set up
following the tragic murder of 16-year-old Ben Kinsella in 2008, and everything we do is
guided by his legacy. Our mission is to prevent knife crime by educating and campaigning:
we help young people to stay safe.
Ben was a kind, creative young person who loved art, music, Arsenal FC, and making
people laugh. He had big dreams of becoming a graphic designer. His death was a
senseless act of violence, and the outpouring of grief and public support that followed
marked the start of a movement. Ben’s own words, written shortly before his death, called for
change, and his voice continues to inspire our work.
Through immersive workshops in our Choices and Consequences Exhibitions and free
online resources, we have reached over 50,000 young people. Our work challenges myths
about knife crime, strengthens peer influence, and sparks meaningful conversations. As we
grow, we remain committed to honouring Ben’s life by making a real, lasting difference to
young people across the UK.
We’re a small team of 10, growing shortly to 14, working across Programmes, Fundraising
and Communications, Finance and Operations and Leadership.

Trustee – Safeguarding & Young People
What you’ll be doing
As the Trustee leading on Safeguarding & Young People, your expertise will guide the Ben
Kinsella Trust in maintaining the highest standards of education, youth work and
safeguarding practice. Working closely with the Senior Leadership Team, the Trustee will
provide strategic oversight, guidance and appropriate challenge on education, youth work
and safeguarding and child protection matters across the organisation.
This role will act as the Board’s safeguarding lead, ensuring safeguarding remains central to
the charity’s governance, culture and decision-making. The Trustee will also act as a Deputy
DSL for escalated or complex safeguarding incidents where additional oversight or support
is required.
This is a highly rewarding role for someone with senior experience in an educational, youth,
community or charitable setting who wants to use their professional expertise to make a real
difference. We are looking for someone who will bring energy, insight and ambition and will
play an active part in shaping the charity’s future. As a key member of the Board, you’ll help
to ensure that Ben’s legacy continues to change lives and prevent knife crime across the
UK.
Strategy and Governance
• Act as a full member of the Board of Trustees, contributing to the overall governance,
strategy, and direction of the charity.
• Lead on education and youth work at Board level, keeping young people at the centre of
our decision making, and ensuring our programme delivery is grounded in best practice.
• Lead on safeguarding and child protection matters at Board level, ensuring safeguarding
remains a key strategic priority for the organisation.
• Support the Board in understanding and carrying out its safeguarding responsibilities and
regulatory obligations.
• Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements, including the Charity
Commission and funders.
Safeguarding Oversight and Support
• Promote a strong safeguarding culture across the organisation, centred on the safety
and wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults.
• Support the review, development and implementation of safeguarding-related policies,
procedures and practices.
• Work closely with the Senior Leadership Team to provide strategic advice and support
on safeguarding and child protection matters.
• Provide oversight and appropriate challenge regarding safeguarding incidents, themes,
risks and organisational responses.
• Act as Deputy DSL in cases involving escalated, high-risk or complex safeguarding
concerns where additional support or oversight is required.
Support and Guidance
• Provide professional education, youth work, and safeguarding expertise and mentorship
to the Board, Senior Leadership Team and relevant staff.
• Support the organisation in developing safe, inclusive and trauma-informed approaches
to working with young people.
• Provide appropriate challenge and scrutiny to ensure all decisions are centred around
young people and their safety, whilst aligning with the charity’s values, responsibilities
and risk mitigation strategies.Who we are looking for

Skills and experience
You’ll have:
• Education and / or Youth work experience: A recognised qualification in education,
youth work, social work or a related field, alongside senior leadership experience in an
organisation that works with children and young people
• Safeguarding experience in a senior role: Substantial safeguarding leadership
experience (5+ years) in a senior leadership, executive or board level role; with current
or previous experience as a Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
• Strategic leadership experience: Proven strategic experience at executive or board
level, recognising the impact of strategic decisions on outcomes for young people, whilst
overseeing service delivery and protecting the organisation from risk.

• The role requires attendance at approximately 8-10 Full Board meetings per year,
usually held virtually.
• Additional commitment includes preparing for meetings, reviewing programmes related
reports and policies, and engaging with safeguarding matters or staff meetings as
required.
• Occasional attendance at charity events, strategy days, or stakeholder meetings may
also be requested.
• Overall, the role is expected to require 6–8 hours per month on average, with some
months busier than others.

About The Outrunners
The Outrunners support young people to get outdoors, get moving, and build the futures they want - all through the power of running, movement and community. Our vision is a London where everyone is included and no one is left behind.
The young people we work with have incredible talent, creativity and energy - but they don’t get the opportunities they need because of deep structural disadvantages, whether that’s racism, sexism or financial inequality.
We harness the collective energy of the running world to change that: helping young people to access fun and accessible running sessions. We help to improve their physical and mental health, their confidence, and their teamwork skills. But that’s just the beginning. The Youth Practitioners who work with our young people are not just coaches but trusted mentors and role models, helping to keep them on the right path. And our Outrunners Youth Hub is not just a room for bag drop but a specially designed space for young people to hang out before a session, play games, read comics, eat healthy snacks, or try to beat us at table tennis! We also use our brand partnerships to provide work experience opportunities, giving young people that all-important foot in the door and setting them up for bright futures.
We also run two unique marathon and half-marathon training Academies - there is a Youth Academy for young people aged 16-21 as well as a Women’s Academy for ethnically diverse women. We bring people together who have never run long-distance before, help foster a supportive community crew, and give them the skills, kit, coaching and confidence to cross that finish line and realise that they can do whatever they set their minds to - and that running belongs to them, too.
Driven by young people themselves, we are building a community that moves together: removing barriers to participation in running and movement; building connections in London’s diverse neighbourhoods; creating pathways to help young people achieve their ambitions; and driving change to tackle disadvantage and make running truly inclusive. Last year, we supported over 1,150 young people across our programmes.
In the 8 years that The Outrunners has existed, we have rapidly caught the attention of the running world and have grown quickly, thanks to the impactful support of major brands, races, the wider running world and the philanthropic and community sectors. Role: Founder and CEO
Background: Tyler has 19 years of experience of working in the charity sector and is an experienced Youth Practitioner. He has worked with vulnerable young people helping to address a wide range of complex issues, from mental health through to housing. He has the lived experience of being a Black man growing up in London and currently lives in Hackney. He has been CEO of The Outrunners for 8 years.
Laura Murphy
Role: Co-Founder and Strategic Advisor
Background: Laura has 16 years of experience working in Marketing with a variety of audiences, including young people. She is currently the head of Brand, Marketing and Communication at Girlguiding.

Rachel Soloman - Head of Community Investment at Peabody, one of the largest and most established housing associations in the UK.

Why do we need new Trustees?
We are at the next stage of our development and want to bring on board the expertise and skills that can support and guide our growth. With our strong partnership, increasing influence, and growing network of supporters, we have a major opportunity to grow our impact in the coming years. We currently have a broad range of skillsets from our existing Trustees, who have a wide range of professional backgrounds - including law, the charity sector, and sports organisation founders. As part of our ongoing development, we want to deepen the expertise of this dynamic team.

What do we need from our Trustees?
Trustees must be people with independent judgement, an ability to speak their mind, and a willingness to use their knowledge, experience and networks to support The Outrunners.
Although not essential, we are particularly interested in Trustees with either of the following skills and experience:
Experience navigating periods of rapid growth and scaling, including providing governance over the internal infrastructure required to do this sustainably, and managing the risks this entails.
Beyond this, the things we need from our Trustees are:
A passion for shaping a different future for young people and having a positive impact in local communities.
An understanding of the challenges facing young people in Hackney, and an insight into how The Outrunners Charity can best add value to supporting the future generations around us.
The ability to support and guide our organisation’s learning and impact upon the community around us and to think strategically and creatively about the challenges and opportunities ahead.
An understanding of safeguarding policies and procedures that will ensure the organisation is rigorous in its processes, ensuring the safety of the communities it engages with.
Good listening skills and the ability to respect the opinions of others.
Good understanding of the responsibilities required of a Trustee.
Willingness to undertake any necessary training which we require of you.
We are not expecting applicants to have all of these qualities, and expect that the best candidates will come with some others. But we hope that our Trustees between them will be able to cover all of these key attributes and more.
Above all, you need to have genuine enthusiasm and a commitment to achieving the best outcomes for the young people we work with by supporting and guiding our Chief Executive and The Outrunners’ passionate and committed staff and volunteers in their mission to better the lives of marginalised young people in Hackney.

Time commitment expectations
Board members are expected to attend the four quarterly meetings and AGM, whilst also being flexible and responsive to unexpected changes. Our Board members are active ambassadors for The Outrunners Charity. This means attending and supporting events and taking opportunities to promote and develop the work of The Outrunners Charity through networks and contacts. We therefore ask that Board members commit about 2 days per year to The Outrunners Charity, on top of the four evening Board Meetings a year and an AGM.
The four essential board meetings are 3 hours long. Meetings are held at a date and time which is convenient for all, which is usually a weekday evening, and are held either online or in-person.
Minimum tenure for a Trustee is 2 years.

South East London Mind is a well-established and highly regarded local charity helping people to be mentally healthy. Working together with those experiencing mental health problems and dementia to improve their quality of life. With an annual turnover of £6M, over 180 staff and 260 volunteers, we are one of the largest charities in the Mind network.
SEL Mind delivers a Peer Support Programme which consist of group activities and therapeutic groups run by Peer Support Volunteers for individuals’ with either a mental health diagnosis or service users who are impacted by mental health within the Royal Borough of Greenwich.
The purpose of the Volunteer Peer Support Group Facilitator is to provide peer support and facilitate a group with the guidance of a coordinator, whilst creating a welcoming environment and sharing their own knowledge/experience of living with mental health difficulties.
The role will also entail the planning of groups, and assisting with other peer support administrative duties.

We’re looking for volunteers to support facilitating our social group alongside a group coordinator. Although there are activity tables, this is not an activity-led group.
The role is about being present, reading the room, and sensing where connection or support might be needed rather than following a plan. You’ll need to be comfortable with uncertainty and able to work without clear direction.
The group has been running for a long time and a key part of this role is settling into the rhythm of the group and also helping new members find their place within it. Good instincts and genuine warmth matter more here than any particular skill.
Part of your role will be to set up and pack down independently, including preparing a tea and coffee table and washing up during and after the session. Sharing a cuppa is central to what makes the group feel welcoming.
If you’re naturally at ease in social settings, happy to take initiative, and able to commit reliably for a minimum of a year this could be a great fit.
Growing Connections Group Facilitator
We’re looking for volunteers to facilitate Growing Connections, a brand-new outdoor group centred around the simple, satisfying tasks of watering, pruning and tidying pot plants, and making space for the conversation and connection that grows alongside it.
You’ll arrive early to set up, this will include readying tea and coffee, co-lead the session with another volunteer facilitator, and pack down and wash up at the end.
You’ll lead without a staff member in the room, though one will be available on site if needed, so we’re looking for people who are comfortable taking the lead.
The gardening gives the session its focus, but a space for conversation and connection is just as important. Over time we hope that members can feel a sense of ownership over the group and the space itself.
You don’t need to be an expert gardener, but you should be comfortable with basic plant care, good at putting people at ease, and able to commit reliably for a minimum of a year Training, support and supervision will be provided.
Creative Connections Group Facilitator
We’re looking for volunteers to facilitate Creative Connections, diverse creative activity group led jointly by volunteers and service users.
You’ll arrive early to set up, help plan and deliver sessions, and pack down at the end.

Creative Writing Group Facilitator
We’re looking for volunteers to co-facilitate our creative writing group, working alongside a group coordinator who leads the sessions.

Your role is to support the coordinator and be present for members, noticing who might need encouragement, who needs space, and helping people feel comfortable enough to share. The Nook, Greenwich Young Persons Group Facilitator
‘The Nook, Greenwich’ is a peer support group run by our Peer Support Coordinator and Peer Support Volunteers. The group is for young people (18-30’s) experiencing low to moderate mental health needs (with or without a diagnosis) in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

About Us
Crisis is here to end homelessness for good. Over the next ten years, our aim is to:
1. We’ll campaign across England, Scotland, and Wales to push for the policies needed to end homelessness. We’ll also challenge unfair treatment and harmful stereotypes about people who are homeless.
2. We’ll open a network of Crisis Centres across the UK. Each Centre will offer high‑quality support to people who need it and create a plan to end homelessness in the local area. We’ll also provide more than 1,000 homes for our members by launching a new housing company that shows how giving people a stable home first can end homelessness.
3. We’ll bring people from all over Britain together to help—landlords, employers, teachers, healthcare workers, and anyone else who wants to make a difference. Everyone has a role to play in ending homelessness
About the Client Services Governance Committee:
· The committee is made up of 3x Trustees and an Expert by Experience who has previous lived experience of homelessness; there is currently no member involvement on the committee
· Makes sure Crisis’ services are delivered safely, professionally, and to a high standard, and giving the Board confidence that this is happening.
· Oversees safeguarding across all Client Services, and helping to build a culture where safety, awareness, and the wellbeing of everyone who comes into contact with Crisis, are top priorities.
· Provides a space to review and challenge how Client Services are governed — including how incidents and complaints are handled.
About the Role of co-opted member:
Purpose of the role:
· To work collaboratively with trustees, senior leadership and Experts by Experience to strengthen the impact of Crisis services
· To help guide the big decisions about member services and ensuring members have safe, positive experiences — keeping Crisis focused on its mission to end homelessness.
· To support the committee in understanding how well Crisis’ services are working and helping to make sure standards and legal requirements are consistently met.
· To review reports about risks, complaints, incidents, and safeguarding issues that affect members.
· To oversee the delivery of impactful and effective tenancy support for Crisis’ new work in housing supply and the development of Crisis Centres.
· To offer insight into what good member support looks like, sharing perspectives on member experiences, and highlighting best practice to inform decisions.
Person Specification:
· Experience in design and best practice in delivery of services to disadvantaged groups
· Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with trustees, staff, and external stakeholders
· Someone who can take part in respectful discussions, ask thoughtful questions and help us make balanced decisions as part of a team
· A commitment to get to know Crisis, including our mission, values and aims, prepare for and attend meetings, engage and contribute
· Awareness of charity governance or a willingness to learn more
