Asylum Justice is the only charity in Wales - and one of very few in the UK - providing free legal advice and representation to people seeking asylum, refugees, and other migrants who are excluded from legal aid. Every day, we help people navigate a hostile system, challenge injustice, and secure safety for themselves and their families.
Demand for our services is higher than ever. In the past year alone, our caseload increased by nearly 50%, and we've taken on more complex, urgent cases - including supporting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and people at immediate risk of destitution or deportation.
We’re now looking for a Funding Officer to join our small, committed team and help secure the resources we need to sustain and grow our work. This is a chance to make a tangible difference - not just in helping us meet income targets, but in strengthening access to justice for some of the most marginalised people in Wales.
The role is hybrid working (Cardiff office and remote working) but fully remote working may also be considered. We are open to compressed hours or part-time working (minimum 28 hours) for the right candidate. We also welcome applications from people interested in a job share arrangement.
About the role
This is a hands-on, varied role that combines fundraising, relationship management, and impact storytelling. You’ll work closely with our Legal Director and wider team to:
- Research and identify funding opportunities from trusts, foundations, and statutory sources
- Write compelling funding bids and reports that reflect our impact and values
- Maintain excellent relationships with funders and support project coordination with delivery partners
- Coordinate grant reporting and keep accurate records of income, spend, and deadlines
- Support internal monitoring and evaluation to strengthen our evidence base
- Help develop our approach to individual giving, fundraising events, and donor communications
We’re looking for someone who shares our commitment to justice and anti-racism, and who brings strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative approach.
Who we’re looking for
We don’t expect you to know everything from day one - we’re open to candidates with transferable skills from across the charity, campaigning, or community sectors. You might have experience as a fundraiser, grant writer, project officer, or in a policy/impact role where writing and relationship-building are key.
What matters most is that you're passionate about what we do, committed to equity and inclusion, and eager to learn and contribute.
What we offer
- A supportive, mission-driven team working in solidarity with people seeking asylum
- Flexibility around working days, location, and hours
- An organisational culture that prioritises wellbeing and psychological safety
- The chance to shape an ambitious and growing organisation at a pivotal time

- Be a key member of the senior management team, working closely with the Executive Director, Legal Director and Board of Trustees to shape RLS’s strategic direction.
- Ensure high standards of reporting, monitoring and impact-communication to funders and stakeholders.
- Help embed organisational systems and infrastructure to support scale-up and sustainability.

We’re seeking someone who:
- Has great experience in senior fundraising roles (ideally including trust/foundation, donor relationships and multi-stream income generation).
- Is comfortable operating at a strategic level and also stepping into operational matters when needed.
- Has excellent communication and influencing skills, able to engage with senior stakeholders, funders and leadership teams.
- Thrives in a fast-moving, values-driven environment, comfortable with change, ambiguity and organisational growth.
- Shares a strong commitment to migrant justice, equity and the mission of RLS.
- Is organised, resilient, and able to manage competing priorities across fundraising and operations.

This role is based in London with hybrid working: you will be required to be in the office at least two days a week, with the remainder of time flexible. The post will require occasional flexibility for meetings, events or travel as part of senior leadership commitments.
RLS is committed to equality of opportunity, particularly welcoming applications from candidates with lived experience of migration, forced displacement, or marginalised communities.
We want you to have every opportunity to demonstrate your skills, ability and potential; please contact us if you require any assistance or adjustment so that we can help with making the application process work for you.

ABOUT TRAIN
TRAIN is a youth work charity based in South Oxfordshire. We support young people aged 10 to 18 in Didcot, Wallingford and the surrounding areas, especially those who are under-served.
Young people in our communities are facing complex challenges. Mental health struggles, pressures at school, family instability and the impact of poverty can leave them feeling isolated or overlooked. Too often, they don’t have access to the right support at the right time. TRAIN exists to change that. We offer trusted relationships with adults outside positions of authority, safe spaces where young people can be themselves, and opportunities to grow in confidence, make positive choices and feel part of their community.
Our vision: every young person should have the opportunities, tools and support they need to create a positive future.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As Fundraising and Communications Coordinator, your main focus will be trusts and foundations: researching opportunities, writing persuasive applications and producing clear reports. You’ll also play a part in growing support from corporates, community fundraising, individual donors and major gifts, helping to build a broader base of income over time.
Alongside this, you’ll lead on communications. That means keeping our website and social channels current, producing supporter newsletters, and sharing our story more widely through PR and campaigns. You’ll help make sure the difference TRAIN makes for young people is seen and understood by funders, partners and the local community.
It’s a hands-on role, well-suited to someone who enjoys writing, building relationships and juggling different projects. You don’t need to be an experienced fundraiser — we’re open to people with transferable skills, whether from corporate, public or third sector backgrounds. What matters most is that you can communicate clearly, organise your workload, and are motivated by making a difference for young people.
You’ll report directly to the CEO and work closely with the rest of the team. This is a part-time role of approximately 30 hours per week, which can be worked flexibly. The role is based in Didcot with hybrid working, but for the right candidate we will consider a fully remote arrangement.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
-
Salary: £28,598 - £31,022 FTE (pro-rated, depending on experience)
-
Contract: Permanent, part-time, approx. 30 hours per week. We can be flexible on the exact number and when they are worked.
-
Annual leave: 25 days plus bank holidays (pro rata)
-
Pension: 3% employer contribution
-
Flexible working: Hybrid by default, fully remote considered. We’re happy to consider other flexible arrangements such as term-time only and job shares.
-
Professional development: Tailored learning and training opportunities
-
Wellbeing: Access to an employee assistance programme with mental health and wellbeing support
-
Culture: Supportive, collaborative team with regular catch-ups and shared learning
