Job description

Night Support Worker (Maternity Cover)
Full Time | 37.5 hours per week | Fixed Term (Maternity Cover) - 9 month contract
Working Pattern: 3 x 12-hour night shifts (8.00pm–8.00am) on a rolling rota, plus 1.5 hours per week for meetings and training.

Be there when it matters most.

At YMCA South Midlands, we believe every young person deserves somewhere safe to belong, someone who believes in them, and the opportunity to thrive.

You'll play a vital role in creating a safe, welcoming and supportive environment throughout the night for our residents. While others are asleep, you'll be there to provide reassurance, respond to emergencies and help residents through some of their most challenging moments.

This is much more than a front-of-house role. It's about building trust, promoting wellbeing and helping young people feel safe, heard and supported when many other services are unavailable.

If you're calm under pressure, naturally compassionate and able to balance empathy with professional boundaries, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

Working as part of our Housing and Support Team, you'll help ensure our accommodation remains a safe and welcoming place for residents throughout the night.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing a professional, friendly and welcoming front-of-house service.
  • Being the first point of contact for residents, visitors and emergency services.
  • Supporting residents experiencing emotional distress, mental health challenges or crisis situations.
  • Responding confidently and calmly to incidents and emergencies.
  • Promoting residents' safety, wellbeing and independence.
  • Managing challenging or anti-social behaviour professionally and consistently.
  • Carrying out welfare checks and maintaining the security of the building.
  • Maintaining accurate records and completing incident reports.
  • Working closely with colleagues to ensure effective handovers and continuity of support.
  • Helping create a positive, respectful and inclusive community where residents can belong, contribute and thrive.

About You

We're looking for someone who is:

  • Compassionate, approachable and resilient.
  • Calm and confident when dealing with challenging situations.
  • Able to build positive relationships while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Comfortable making decisions independently during the night.
  • An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Organised and able to keep accurate records.
  • Flexible and able to work a rolling night shift rota.

Experience working in housing, supported accommodation, homelessness, youth work, social care, mental health or customer service would be advantageous, but most importantly we're looking for people who genuinely care about making a difference.

Why Join YMCA South Midlands?

Working at YMCA South Midlands means being part of an organisation that's committed to changing lives and strengthening communities.

You'll join a supportive team where your contribution is valued, your wellbeing matters and you'll have the opportunity to make a real difference to young people's lives every single shift.

Working Pattern

This is a full-time fixed-term position to cover maternity leave.

  • 37.5 hours per week
  • Three 12-hour night shifts (8.00pm–8.00am)
  • 1.5 hours per week for meetings and training
  • Working on a rolling rota, including weekends and bank holidays.
