Information about the role

The main thing we need you to do is cheer! You will be a vital part of race day, supporting 170 Shelter runners from the side lines. You’ll need to help create a high energy, friendly atmosphere, motivating everyone on race day to do their best.

Volunteering at this event is also an opportunity to have fun, meet new people and experience some wonderful community spirit whilst contributing towards our mission.

Date: Sunday 13 September 2026

Time: Half a day – approx. 9am – 2pm

Location: Newcastle/Gateshead – along the race route

The Coroners' Courts Support Service (CCSS) is a registered Charity whose trained volunteers give emotional and practical support to bereaved families and other witnesses attending an inquest.

We need volunteers to provide emotional support and practical help to bereaved families, witnesses and others attending Inquests at Coroners' Court. Our volunteers at court also provide help and assistance to the Coroners' Officers, as and when required.

We are looking for reliable, supportive people with excellent communication skills. A mature and calm attitude is needed in order to be able to talk to people during a sometimes bewildering and emotional experience. Volunteers must be willing to undergo a period of observations and shadowing, as well as attend a 3 day training course. A minimum commitment of one day (9:00am - 5:00pm) per fortnight is asked for. Training and mentoring is provided and travel expenses to the court are reimbursed.

New volunteers should possess good communication and listening skills and the ability to empathise with people they support.

However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

At Rethink Mental Illness, we believe everyone deserves understanding, connection, and the chance to live a fulfilling life. Our volunteers play a vital role in supporting people affected by mental illness and helping create communities where no one feels alone. 

About the role

As a Volunteer Befriender, you will provide friendly, face-to-face support to people in East Hertfordshire who are experiencing mental health challenges. Your role will involve building positive, supportive relationships, encouraging confidence, and helping people feel more connected to their community. 

You may be asked to travel within the local area to meet with service users. Ideally, you will be able to offer at least 1 hour per week. 

Full training and regular supervision will be provided, so you’ll feel confident and supported in your role. 

This role requires an enhanced DBS check, which will be arranged and paid for by Rethink Mental Illness. 

As a Volunteer Befriender, you will: 

Meet with service users at times and places that suit their needs.
Offer emotional support by drawing on your own lived experience.
Encourage and support people to build social connections and take part in community activities.
Act as a “community connector” by signposting people to local services and opportunities. 

About the service

Our service works with adults (18+) who are known to mental health services and living with a mental health condition. We provide befriending support to people in the Hertfordshire towns of: Ware, Hertford, Hoddesdon, Broxbourne, Cheshunt, Cuffley, and Waltham Cross. 

What will make you a great fit for this role?

Victory Afghanistan has grown enormously over the past year. We now support more than 1,800 Afghan girls and women through education, mentorship, higher education, internships and employment opportunities.

We are doing really well in developing these opportunities, but we have reached a bottleneck: we need funding to make more of them possible.

We are therefore looking for volunteers in the UK with any fundraising experience who might be willing to give us some of their time.

Because Victory Afghanistan is a US-registered 501(c)(3), we are not currently looking for people to write UK grant applications. Instead, we particularly need help with:

•  Approaching companies and their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) teams
• Developing corporate partnerships and sponsorship
•  Identifying and approaching potential donors
• Making connections with high-net-worth individuals and philanthropists
•  Helping us build relationships with people and organisations that may be able to support our work
•  Supporting fundraising activities and events in the UK

We realise this is a big ask. We are completely volunteer-led and currently unfunded, but we have built something substantial and are now at the stage where funding could make an enormous practical difference.

We need money for laptops and internet connectivity, English language tests, support for students going to university, our Afghanistan-based team and the programmes that prepare our students for higher education and employment.
