The Engineering Development Trust (EDT) is seeking a Chair of Trustees to lead its Board at a pivotal time, as EDT works towards its ambitious goal of reaching 1 million Industrial Cadets while navigating a challenging charity landscape.

 We’re looking for someone with senior leadership experience, strong understanding of charity governance and finance, and the ability to support and challenge at Board level.

About EDT

EDT is a UK-wide education charity delivering over 50,000 learning experiences each year through the Industrial Cadets Awards. We bring together employers, educators and young people aged 9–21, helping them explore STEM pathways and access rewarding future careers. EDT plays a critical role in tackling skills gaps, improving social mobility and increasing diversity across STEM industries.

About the role

This is a high-impact trustee leadership opportunity for someone who wants to shape the future of a national charity. As Chair, you will provide strategic leadership to the Board, ensuring strong governance, financial oversight and organisational effectiveness.

You will work closely with the Chief Executive, acting as a trusted sounding board while maintaining accountability for delivering EDT’s mission and strategy. You will also act as an ambassador, representing EDT to partners, funders and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees
• Ensure effective charity governance and compliance
• Oversee financial health and sustainability
• Support and challenge the Chief Executive
• Lead Board development and performance
• Act as an external ambassador for EDT

About You

We are looking for a collaborative, credible and values-driven leader who can bring:

• Senior leadership experience (Board or executive level)
• Strong understanding of charity governance, finance and strategy
• Experience working with or alongside Boards of Trustees
• Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills
• The ability to lead with integrity, inclusivity and sound judgement

Experience in STEM, education or skills development is beneficial but not essential. Most importantly, you will share our commitment to improving opportunities for young people.

Commitment

• Approx. 4 Board meetings per year plus committee involvement
• Regular engagement with the Chief Executive
• Attendance at key events and stakeholder meetings

This is a voluntary role with reasonable expenses reimbursed.

Time expectation

This role is really flexible! You could choose to volunteer at one event for a couple of hours or attend multiple fundraising events.

We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

• You’ll need to be aged 18+ to volunteer in this role. If you’re aged 16-17, you’ll need to be supervised by a friend, family member, or guardian over the age of 18 in order to carry out any fundraising activity.

This is a flexible role that can fit around your other commitments to suit you. You’ll be part of a team raising vital funds while having fun in the process!

The Role

As Chair of the Board of Trustees, you will be the strategic leader who ensures YMCA Wirral remains strong, accountable, and ambitious. You will guide the Board, support the Chief Executive, and help shape the organisation’s next chapter including governance development, community influence, and long‑term sustainability.

Your leadership will help ensure that the voices of residents, staff, and the wider community are heard, valued, and embedded in everything we do.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead strategic direction champion social mobility, inclusion, and trauma‑informed practice across all areas of the organisation.
• Strengthen governance ensure the Board operates effectively, transparently, and in line with regulatory expectations.
• Support senior leadership provide guidance, challenge, and mentorship to the Chief Executive and senior team.
• Build partnerships nurture relationships with funders, commissioners, community partners, and stakeholders.
• Champion opportunity drive initiatives that open pathways to housing stability, wellbeing, education, and employment.

 Every penny counts when it comes to improving the lives of the thousands of cats and kittens across the UK that need our help each year. Our collection box fundraising volunteers help our volunteer groups raise vital funds by collecting and distributing collection boxes in their local area. Making a difference can mean as little as raising 20p, which is enough to feed one cat in our care for a day, to £150 which is the average cost of a cat in our care.

As our Programme Manager, you’ll work closely with our Founder & CEO to create programmes that bring people together, spark friendships and reduce loneliness in real, human ways.

You’ll help us design and test our first pilot activities — from small community gatherings to connection‑building workshops — and then develop a wider programme of meaningful experiences co‑created with the people we serve.

You don’t need decades of experience. You just need creativity, empathy, organisation and a passion for building spaces where people feel they belong.

You might help with:

• Designing and delivering SUNSHINE’s first pilot programmes.

• Co‑producing future activities with participants, volunteers and community partners.

• Creating safe, welcoming environments where people can connect.

• Managing programme logistics, scheduling and volunteer involvement.

• Gathering feedback and learning to help shape our long-term programme strategy.

• Bringing warmth, imagination and structure to everything we build.
