Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis (APF) is the UK’s leading charity for people affected by pulmonary fibrosis. We are looking for a Trustee with lived experience to join our Board and help ensure the voices of patients, families and carers are at the heart of everything we do.

We recognise that living with pulmonary fibrosis can be challenging. We are committed to supporting Trustees in a way that works for them, including options to join meetings remotely where needed.

As a Trustee, you will help ensure that lived experience shapes our decisions, priorities and culture, influencing how we design services, set direction and deliver meaningful change.

Who we’re looking for

We are particularly keen to hear from people who bring lived experience of pulmonary fibrosis, for example as a:

• Person living with pulmonary fibrosis
• Carer, family member or close supporter
• Someone closely affected by the condition

You do not need previous Board experience. We are looking for people who can:

• Share insight and perspective to inform strategic discussions
• Reflect the needs, challenges and priorities of the PF community
• Ask questions, contribute ideas and challenge constructively
• Work collaboratively and respectfully with others

We would also welcome, but do not require, experience in areas such as:

• HR, people management or organisational culture
• Fundraising, supporter engagement or community development

The role

As a Trustee, you will:

• Help shape APF’s strategy and long-term direction
• Ensure strong governance, accountability and financial oversight
• Bring lived experience insight into Board discussions and decisions
• Help ensure services, research, information and campaigns reflect real needs
• Highlight barriers, inequalities and opportunities for improvement
• Contribute to subcommittees or projects where your perspective adds value

Time commitment

• ~4 Board meetings per year, with flexibility to attend remotely where needed
• Preparation time for meetings
• Occasional participation in subcommittees or advisory work, depending on your interests

We will work with you to ensure participation is manageable and accessible.

This is a voluntary, unpaid role. Reasonable expenses are reimbursed, including travel and caring costs where needed.

This is an unpaid role with reasonable out-of-pocket expenses reimbursed. Trustees are expected to attend Board meetings (primarily London-based), undertake training, be willing to participate in committee work if applicable, and contribute approximately 7–10 days annually. Appointments are for an initial three-year term, with potential reappointment for up to six years.

One of our Support Workers will always be there for guidance and they will be responsible for the personal care of your buddy, but they may stay on the side during the time you're in the water.

Our Gardener Volunteers support our homes by helping to maintain their outdoor spaces through weeding, pruning and planting, so that the people we support can enjoy spending time in a beautiful environment.

Role  Overview
We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Volunteers to join our new drop in group in Herford that take place on 2nd Thursday of month, 10:30-12:30. This role is ideal for individuals looking to make a meaningful impact in the community while gaining valuable experience.

This role is perfect for retired healthcare or student healthcare professionals or trainee speech and language students.

The Say Aphasia charity provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia; a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury like a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public. It is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence.

Aphasia occurs due to injury to the brain such as a stroke. It affects access to language, resulting in difficulties following conversations, speaking, reading and writing.

Volunteers will support the running of the group with communicating, and will have the opportunity to utilise their communication skills and IT knowledge to take a register of attendance.

Responsibilities

• Provide companionship and support to individuals, particularly those living with asphasia.
• Assist in organising activities that promote social interaction and engagement.
• Communicate effectively with participants, ensuring their needs are understood and met.
• Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
• Collaborate with other volunteers to enhance the group.

Qualifications

• An understanding or knowledge in aphasia is desirable.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse groups.
• Proficiency in IT, including familiarity with common software applications.
• A compassionate and patient attitude towards individuals in need of support.

Our Independent Visitor Service is looking for volunteers in or near to Stoke on Trent.

For many children and young people living in foster care can be unsettling. You can make a difference by volunteering as an Independent Visitor. 

We are looking for fun, reliable, and pro-active volunteers from all different cultures, backgrounds and experiences who have a genuine interest in making a difference to the lives of children and young people. 

You will decide with your young person what to do, but activities could include going to the cinema, bowling, playing football, going to a restaurant, riding a bike, or walking in a park. We will match you with a child you share common interests with. 

You do not need experience of working with children and young people, just an interest in their development and welfare. Full training and support are provided 

Here’s a few of the young people we have waiting for a volunteer: 

• Amy (12) lives with an older carer, she would like an active Independent Visitor who can do sports with her. 

• Brad (13) lives in residential care with other young people, he doesn’t have anyone in his family visit. He would like an Independent Visitor to take him out and have fun, like the other young people. 

• Cassie (16) lives with carers in a new town, she doesn’t have any friends in the area yet. She would like an Independent Visitor to help with her confidence and going out in the local area, she loves hot chocolate and cake. 

• Danny (11) lives with foster carers and attends a special school. He would like an Independent Visitor to help him be more independent, he likes parks, aeroplanes, and animals. 

• Emma (9) lives with her carer in a very busy household, she would like an Independent Visitor to spend some time with her on her own trying different activities together.

The Application 

• Volunteering mainly happens at weekends and after school hours as the young people are usually in school during the daytime 

• The role requires commitment of at least 24 months with one visit per month; this ensures stability for the Child or Young Person 

• Complete the Personal Statement section on the application form as fully as possible; tell us all about you; it forms part of the shortlisting process
