Do you enjoy public speaking? Do you want to share the message of who Mencap are, what we do and bust some myths to groups and corporates around learning disabilities? If the answer is yes, then our Mencap Volunteer Speaker role could be for you!

We’re looking for confident public speakers to represent Mencap by delivering Lunch and Learn talks. You’ll be fully supported with training, guidance, and a prepared presentation and script. In this role, you’ll deliver engaging sessions either in person or virtually via Teams, reaching a wide range of groups and organisations.

Frequently you'll be co-delivering these talks with people with a learning disability, so you'll hear first hand their stories and the impact you'll make.

For this role you will need access to your own laptop.

We want to spread the message of who Mencap are and the amazing work we do, so as well as attending lunch and learns requested by our current corporates, we're looking for volunteers who will as part of the role, proactively; research, reach out and contact local groups (e.g: Rotary Clubs, Women's Institutes) and share our lunch and learn presentation with them.

The role also gives you the opportunity to attend cheque presentations and act as a representative for Mencap at supporter’s fundraising activities.

We are looking for a friendly, patient, female volunteer to befriend a lovely lady in Maidenhead. On cosy days in, she loves to have a chat, listen to music, paint her nails or a do a jigsaw puzzle. When feeling up to it, she would love to be taken in her wheelchair to her favourite treat, McDonalds.

She takes a little while to warm up to new people, so can sometimes display behaviours which may come across as challenging, such as making short, sharp noises. It would be great if her new volunteer has some experience with this or is someone who isn’t fazed easily. It’s important to know that her care team would always be a helping hand away, and that her not-so-secret kryptonite is chocolate!

Please note this person’s residence have a pet cat.

Visits will vary in length but tends to be around an hour or longer, depending on what you do.

In this role you will spend quality time with the person you visit and could do a range of different activities like:

We support a charming 68 year old gentleman who loves looking after the birds in the garden, always makes time for a pub lunch, and rarely says no to a bit of cake or a chocolate biscuit!

We are looking for someone to visit and do just that. There is even a budget for bringing birthday and Christmas gifts. Visits are only every two months, so this role could work well even for someone with a busy schedule.

He is keen to find an attentive listener who will show an interest in hearing his imaginative stories and will giggle at his jokes. We’re looking for a patient and kind volunteer to support an active and energetic man in Streatham. He’ll take some time to get to know you, so you’re first few visits will likely be spent going for walks around the local area with a member of his support team. This gentleman is non-verbal and will communicate with you through sounds, gestures and movements.

He takes a little while to warm up to new people, so you will need to be patient while he takes his time becoming comfortable with you. It would be great if his new volunteer had some experience with people with learning disabilities, though this isn’t at all necessary as long as you have a positive attitude. It’s important to know that his care team would always be on hand, and that his not-so-secret kryptonite is chocolate!

This is a Stop and Stay visit role, meaning that the person you’ll be visiting might have some verbal communication skills or they use sounds and/or facial/body expressions to communicate with you. Your volunteer manager will be happy to help you with ideas and suggestions for things you can do. Visits will vary in length but tend to be around half an hour to an hour long.

Have a couple of hours to spare every two months? Are you a patient and friendly person? You could be just the person to make a huge difference.

We support a bubbly and interesting gentleman who would love a volunteer to go out with every two months. He has a range of interests that he would love to share with you.

He can often be found admiring the birds in his garden, with his camera in hand. He is also a big sports fan, supporting Manchester United in the football, among other sports. Don't worry, though, he happily talks about anything!

He is an active soul, enjoying walks and cycling. Above all, he would love to share some of his diverse interests with a friend. You don't need to share any of these interests, but if you did that would certainly be a bonus!

No experience with learning disabilities is needed for this role, just a friendly attitude.

Whether it be going out for lunch, a coffee, or just a walk, this is a great opportunity where you could make a real difference.

Our Shop Volunteers raise money for the people we support with a Learning Disability. Do you have a few hours a week to spare and share your time with us?

Our retail roles are varied and fun. You could be sorting donations from the public, dressing our window or serving customers on the till. There are many people from different walks of life and it's a great way to get practical experience and to meet new people.

This role will take place on a weekly basis for a few hours We will try our best to be flexible around the best time for you, but also need to consider the store opening times and volunteer rota. It could be a weekday or weekend, morning or afternoon, our stores are usually open 7 days a week. We’d appreciate any time that you can spare.

Whilst in the store, you will help with activities based on the needs of the Store Manager. 

**Tasks you could get up to whilst volunteering could include:**

- Serving customers on the till
- Taking stock donations from the public
- Tagging and steaming stock for the shop floor
- Dressing the window displays
- Asking people to join us as a volunteer

**As a Retail Volunteer you will be:**

- Friendly and Approachable

- A good communicator (including listener)
- Willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary

This volunteer role is to support the staff in the summer schemes to provide a stimulating and caring environment for children and young people. To encourage the children to try new experiences and have fun during their summer break. Having someone to support and encourage them can give children and young people the confidence they need to try new experiences and enjoy a wide range of activities. Providing an opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities can promote physical and emotional wellbeing, leading to increased confidence and self esteem.

When do I need to be available?

Our summer schemes take place throughout July and August, running Monday to Friday from 8:45am to 4:15pm. Volunteers can choose to commit to morning sessions, afternoon sessions, or full-day sessions. Ideally, we ask volunteers to commit to a minimum of one week.

Where will I be volunteering?

The location of the Belfast Community Scheme will be: Mencap Centre, 5 School Road, Newtownbreda, BT8 6BT

What will I be doing?

• Support and contribute to the success of Mencap summer activity programmes for children
• Assist with providing a caring, and varied play-based environment
• Help facilitate a programme of care, learning experiences and summer fun
• Assist our Summer Scheme colleagues
• Assist in the delivery of a range of activities and new experiences

There are a variety of opportunities available from helping with event set-up, to cheering on runners along the route, to supporting finish line celebrations. Every role plays an important part in making the day truly special.

From our base at Ormeau Park near Ravenhill Road, you’ll also have the chance to cheer on marathon and relay runners as they pass by, sharing in the energy, joy and excitement of this unforgettable event.
