Reading volunteer roles

As an activity group driver, you’ll collect older people from their homes, accompany them to the monthly activity group and drop them home again afterwards.

The activity group will be at the same community venue and will include older people, activity group leads, drivers, and the activity group coordinator. Activity groups normally last around two hours and will include an activity that gets people moving such as: dance, chair exercises, boules, skittles or boccia.

Activity groups are free monthly groups that are open to older people who are lonely, isolated and in need of companionship. Activity groups are a great way for older people to stay active and to make new friends in their local area.

To become an activity group driver, you’ll need to:

• Attend a 30-minute online volunteer group induction
• Complete an ID check
• Provide a reference
• Complete online volunteer training modules

Tasks include:

• Calling the older people to remind them about the activity group and to check that they’re still able to attend.
• Keeping in regular contact with the activity group coordinator so they know when you’re available to drive, and so you know which older people you’re driving.
• Planning your route so you can safely collect the older people and drive them to and from the activity group in good time.
• Collecting one or two older people, driving them to the activity group and dropping them home again afterwards.
• Staying at the activity group to help serve refreshments and to socialise with the older people and other volunteers.
• Following the guidance in the online volunteer training so that the activity groups are safe, enjoyable, appropriate and in line with our charitable aims.
• Reporting any concerns to the activity group coordinator.
• Keeping your knowledge and training up to date by reading our monthly volunteer newsletter – Re-engage Matters.

The Befriender 'In Home' Volunteer will play an important role by providing companionship to someone we support at our supported living service by spending time with them, visiting them in the home and doing activities they enjoy. These might include chatting over a cup of tea, reading books, playing board games, etc.

The rewarding role would involve training to help with a vast range of problems. These include but are not limited to benefits, debt, housing and employment.

The role would involve giving advice to clients both face-to-face and over the telephone.

Main duties and responsibilities may include:

Applicants should be IT competent and able to commit to two sessions per week for at least two years.

Training will be held over a full day – probably a Wednesday – each week starting in May/June 2026. There will be additional training time when new recruits can observe experienced advisers.

There will be opportunities to help out for a few sessions prior to training starting so that applicants can check the role is right for them.

Our prison volunteers nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by delivering training sessions for prison mentors and offering ongoing advice, guidance and support through mentor meetings.

Successful applicants will be sent interview questions in advance with notice to prepare. We will respond to all applications. Training:

You'll be given high quality training to prepare you for volunteering with Shannon Trust. This takes place over 4 training sessions and via our online training portal. The Treasurer leads oversight of the financial management of BCT and supports the Board to understand the organisation’s financial position, resilience and future outlook. Role: Audit & Risk Committee Member

Location: London/remote

The Royal College of Pharmacy’s Audit & Risk Committee (ARC) is a sub-committee of the College’s Board of Trustees, established to provide independent oversight of risk management, internal controls, and audit processes.

While the day-to-day management of operational and financial risks is delegated to the College executive, the ARC supports the Board of Trustees to ensure that the College maintains robust systems of internal control, complies with legal and regulatory requirements, and appropriately manages strategic and operational risks.

This is a voluntary role with an estimated time commitment of one day per quarter. This includes attendance in person or by Teams at four meetings annually, plus reading and preparation time. Trustees serve for a term of up to three years with an option for appointment for a further two terms.

Principal duties as a committee member:

• Propose the remit for the audit for approval by the Trustees

• Review, with the auditors, the outcome of the financial audit and any management response – and report to the Trustees

• Assist the Trustees in ensuring the College’s policies and procedures for ensuring legal compliance in all areas are implemented

• Advise the Trustees on the appointment and management of internal auditors or compliance management

• Review the risk register and assess the scope and effectiveness of the systems designed to identify, assess, manage and monitor significant risks and report to the Trustees.

We are seeking applicants with the following skills, knowledge and experience:

• Senior management or director-level experience, ideally as a finance director, company secretary, director of governance, or chief executive

• Risk management and mitigation, including experience in complex organisational environments

• Understanding the distinct role of trustees and operational/executive functions

How Our Governance Works

Our governance model is built on four connected layers:

• Academy Advisory Councils (AACs) – representing local voices
• The Board of Trustees – providing strategic oversight
• The Trust Leadership Team – delivering day-to-day executive leadership
• Trust Members – ensuring accountability at the highest level

Supporting this structure are specialist committees covering Finance, Risk & Audit, HR, Education & Standards, and Remuneration, alongside our four Academy Advisory Councils at:

• Brigantia Hill Fort
• Hinde House (2–16)
• Yewlands
• Longley Park Sixth Form

As our Trust grows, our AACs are playing an increasingly vital role, with opportunities for greater responsibility and influence over time.

The Role of the Academy Advisory Council

Each AAC is made up of dedicated individuals—parents, staff, and members of the local community—who work closely with academy leaders and Trust representatives.

This is your opportunity to:

• Have your voice heard at Trust level
• Support and challenge academy leaders
• Represent your community and its interests
• Help shape the experience of young people locally

You’ll meet with senior academy leaders, alongside Link Trustees and members of the Trust Executive Team, ensuring your insights directly inform decision-making.

What You’ll Do

As an Academy Advisor, you will:

• Act as a critical friend—supportive, encouraging, and constructively challenging
• Provide local insight to inform Trust decisions
• Support safeguarding understanding at academy level
• Build strong links between the academy and its community
• Review academy performance and discuss key priorities
• Help ensure Trust values and ethos are lived day-to-day

Unlike traditional governing bodies, you won’t be burdened with financial or staffing decisions. Instead, you’ll have the time and focus to look at what really matters—impact, experience and community voice.

What’s Expected of You

We understand this is a voluntary role, and we aim to make it meaningful and manageable:

• Three meetings per year, usually held after school
• Preparation by reading papers and contributing to discussions
• Occasional focused academy visits to understand life on the ground
• Completion of a simple annual skills audit
• Commitment to safeguarding training and DBS clearance
