Volunteers would be expected to commit 100 hours of volunteering a year in a clinical capacity. They will also be expected to keep in regular contact with their line manager and keep up to date with their training.

This role will require an in-person interview, which will take place provisionally in Birmingham City Centre. Interview dates/times will be emailed to you should your application be successful. Please ensure that you are able to attend an in person interview in Birmingham before submitting your application.

Once your screening for role has been completed, you will be invited to attend your local St John Ambulance Network for a Welcome and Induction.

Training for this role consists of online learning modules and a 6 day in-person course, normally spread across three weekends. Your local Network will support you through the training process.

Volunteer as a princess, superhero or jedi to bring magic to children who need it! 

Make a Smile volunteers can take on a number of different roles:

1. Characters - Visit children in costume, as well-known children's characters (eg princesses and superheroes). Provide support at events of a number of other charities, children's hospitals and council organisations through storytime, interactions and activities. 

2. Magic Makers - Visit children out of costume and provide enrichment such as arts and crafts, games etc. 

3. Committee - Help behind the scenes by organising events, recruiting volunteers, running training sessions, helping sort costumes, running fundraisers etc.

As part of the role, successful volunteers would need to attend a six-day training course (over three weekends), and maintain CPD by completing a minimum of 100 operational hours (as an Emergency Responder at events). Volunteers would also be expected to attend network meetings on a regular basis.

We will be running a number of information events locally and these will be shared after selection of your application.

Interviews will be held in Mid-April at our Liverpool HQ. The selection centre will include an informal conversation with some of our volunteers, double checking of details and the opportunity to have a go at some lifesaving skills.

Our current volunteer treasurers usually spend between 2 to 4 hours per week in this role. More hours may be required at certain times, such as towards the end of the financial year but support is always available.

OPERATIONAL SUPPORT VOLUNTEER

First Aid Services Operations deploy hundreds of volunteers and employees every week on community and
commercial events, to make sure first aid is available in our local communities, as and when it is needed.
Operational Support is a flexible role which will work with, and proactively provide support to, various teams
to ensure volunteers always have a positive experience. This could range from carrying out practical tasks
which positively impact our people’s welfare on events, to be a friendly face welcoming new volunteers to
selection events, or existing volunteers to their Clinical Competency Assessments, or even helping Units to
increase their presence in the community.

WHAT YOU WOULD BE INVOLVED IN (DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES)

• On first aid events, work with Event Managers, Treatment Centre Managers, Event Communications teams and Logistics teams, to support the welfare of adult volunteers and employees by taking proactive action. This can include making sure people are taking sufficient breaks, drinking plenty of water, eating appropriately and supporting one another. Other tasks could include helping make and serve refreshments, regularly checking to see if everyone is ok and signposting to support available through My Wellbeing, where necessary.
• Support Training and Recruitment teams on selection events, welcome events, training events and Clinical Competency Assessments, to ensure they run smoothly and are a positive experience. This can include welcoming and signing in attendees, collating and processing relevant paperwork, inputting outcomes on computer programmes, providing refreshments and invigilating written assessments.
• Assist Unit Managers to increase their Unit’s presence in the local community by promoting recruitment opportunities, supporting the fundraising lead and building relationships with local organisations to raise awareness of first aid.
• Perform any other administrative and support duties commensurate with these responsibilities to keep the organisation running smoothly.

We are looking for Welcome volunteers to staff the welcome desk and be first point of contact for our visitors. Our volunteers play an important and valuable role in our cathedral community. Volunteering  can be a wonderful way to find a sense of purpose and belonging. You can use your skills, build your confidence and develop as part of a supportive and caring team. You’ll have the opportunity to work in an exciting and vibrant place of Christian worship, surrounded by beautiful architecture and our world-famous stained-glass windows.

Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and each person has their own reasons for wanting to volunteer. We welcome applications from anyone interested in being a part of what we do, and will work with you to ensure that your volunteering experience is as inclusive and accessible as possible.

Our volunteers need to be sympathetic to our vision, mission and values, but you do not need to be a Christian to join our team.

Tasks include: 

· To greet visitors entering the cathedral and offer a first-class welcome

· To open positive conversations and demonstrate the welcoming nature of the cathedral

· To provide information and signpost as requested by the visitor, details and basic history of the cathedral, location of toilets etc.

DBS Check and Training to be completed / provided:

• Basic DBS check
• Basic Awareness and Foundation level safeguarding training.
• ACT Counter Terrorism training.
• In-house additional training as required.

Ensuring the safety of everyone who comes into the cathedral is Birmingham Cathedral Chapter’s highest priority. All volunteers must also complete our Safeguarding training before they can start working with us.

What this volunteering opportunity will provide you with:

• Knowledge of the international significance of the windows, the artists Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris and their links to Birmingham.
• Experience working with people from a diverse range of backgrounds.
• Insight into the workings of the cathedral, and experience working in a sacred building and place of faith.
• The opportunity to practice speaking in various foreign languages dependent on the nationality of visitors you encounter.
