Job description

THE FAIR CREDIT CHARITY

Trustee opportunities - help us make fair credit work better

Two Trustees  -   UK-Wide  -  Predominantly virtual  -  Voluntary

Millions of people in the UK are poorly served by mainstream financial services.  Too often, having a low or unpredictable income, a thin credit history or simply very little financial resilience means fewer choices, high costs and less access to credit when it is genuinely needed.

The Fair Credit Charity exists to help change that.

Our purpose is to influence the financial, legislative and regulatory landscape to help create an ethical and responsible lending environment in which financially excluded people are better served.  But we do something unusual for a charity interested in financial inclusion ... we also own a lender.

In 2015, The Fair Credit Charity established Fair for You Enterprise CIC, an ethical lender providing affordable credit to lower-income and financially excluded households.  Fair for You has subsequently supported more than 100,000 families across the UK through loans totalling more than £90 million.

What does The Fair Credit Charity do?

The Fair Credit Charity (or FCC) is the charitable partner and sole owner of Fair for You Enterprise CIC.  Our role is not to run the lender.  Fair for You has its own Board and Executive responsible for its strategy and regulated operations.

Our job as Trustees is to be an effective and responsible charitable owner: ensuring that the CIC continues to serve the purpose for which it was created and that its activities remain consistent with our charitable objects, values and commitment to public benefit.

In doing so, we examine Fair for You through three lenses:

Purpose - is it continuing to serve financially excluded and lower-income households and providing responsible credit for genuine household needs?

Values - are fairness, openness, trust, integrity and partnership reflected in the way the organisation operates and in the organisations with which it works?

Social impact - what difference is its lending making to customers' lives, and what can the evidence tell us about how financial exclusion might be tackled more effectively?

There is another opportunity too.  Fair for You's experience gives The FCC access to a remarkable body of data and insight into the financial lives of households frequently overlooked by mainstream financial services.  We want to explore how, appropriately and ethically, that can support research, policy thinking and practical solutions to financial exclusion.

Who are we looking for?

We want to appoint two new Trustees.

We already have a committed Board. We are now deliberately looking to strengthen it with additional professional experience and external perspective.  Across the two appointments, we are particularly interested in people who bring significant experience in one or more of:

  • Finance and accountancy - particularly senior financial management, audit, investment, lending or financial services;
  • Charity governance and compliance - including Charity Commission requirements, charity accounting, risk, governance or regulation;
  • Business and commercial leadership - people accustomed to understanding organisations, asking good questions and balancing purpose with financial sustainability; and
  • Influencing and public affairs - particularly experience of government, regulation, public policy, campaigning or influencing institutions.

You do not need previous Trustee experience.  Nor do you need to be an expert in affordable credit.

You do need to be comfortable reading Board papers, understanding data, asking constructive but sometimes difficult questions and exercising independent judgment.

We are looking for people who will contribute around the Board table, rather than simply attend it.

We also want a Board with different perspectives

The people most affected by financial exclusion are not a homogeneous group, and we do not want our Trustee Board to be one either.  We therefore particularly welcome applications from people whose backgrounds and perspectives are currently under-represented on charity Boards and in financial services leadership.  That might come through your professional career.  It might also come through your personal or community experience.  We are interested in what you can bring, not whether you fit a conventional picture of a charity Trustee.

We welcome applications regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, religion or belief, sexual orientation or socio-economic background.

What will you be joining?

The FCC is deliberately a small and focused charity.

During 2026 we have been refreshing our governance arrangements and sharpening the responsibilities of the Charity. The next phase is about putting those arrangements into practice and ensuring they work.

Trustees will therefore have an opportunity to shape the Charity at an interesting point in its development rather than simply inherit a settled model.

Our values are openness, fairness, trust, integrity and partnership.  We expect Trustees to bring those values to the Board alongside the Nolan Principles of Public Life and the legal responsibility of charity trusteeship.

The commitment

Trustees are normally appointed for a three-year term.

The Board will ordinarily meet three times each year, predominantly virtually, with occasional pre-planned face-to-face meetings or strategy sessions.  Trustees will also need time to read papers and may occasionally be asked to contribute between meetings.

We expect the overall commitment to be approximately four to six days each year.

The role is voluntary and unpaid, although reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Interested?

Please send us:

Your CV, together with a short statement of no more than one 'page' explaining:

  • why The Fair Credit Charity interests you;
  • what you would bring to our Board; and
  • which of the areas of required experience you believe you could particularly contribute to.

Please don't feel that you need to write a conventional charity-sector application.  We are more interested in understanding who you are, what you know and how you think.

Applications should be addressed to the Chair, Jonathan Moore, by close of business on Friday 23rd October 2026.

Shortlisted candidates will meet a small panel of Trustees and members of the Executive for an online interview.  Our preferred candidates will subsequently be invited to attend a Trustee Board meeting before formal appointment.

If you think financial services can and should work better for people who currently the fewest choice, we would like to hear from you
