The Role

You will help older people feel more confident and connected. From the comfort of your home, you’ll research options and link them with local and national services that can make a real difference.

In this role, no two days are the same. You might:

- Research social activities and follow up with someone to help them feel less lonely

- Arrange transport for someone with mobility challenges to get to a day centre or lunch club

- Find trusted tradespeople, like gardeners, to help someone stay independent at home

- Make calls on behalf of someone who lacks the confidence to do so themselves

- Connect people with their local Age UK or similar organisations

- Each call is different, but all make a real difference to older people’s lives.

Older people are at the heart of everything we do at Age UK. You don’t need prior experience, we’ll provide full training and ongoing support. It’s helpful if you understand the challenges people may face in later life and will need some awareness of local and national services older people can be referred to. 

Strong communication skills and basic confidence using computers and online tools are important for this role.

You’ll get full training and an induction, so you feel confident in your role. We’ll provide regular check-ins, team support sessions, and opportunities to connect with other volunteers for peer support.

This role takes place Monday to Friday, between 9am and 5pm. We’ll work with you to find times that suit you within these hours.

We are looking for up to ten UK university students to join our volunteer Student Ambassadors team and help Ygam achieve its social purpose by reaching out to students at university. This will be achieved by advising Ygam on the needs of students, supporting with content development, organising activities at your campus, and join us at events to raise awareness of gaming and gambling harms.

As a Trustee, you will help shape the future of PILC, ensuring that we remain true to our purpose while continuing to deliver meaningful impact for the communities we serve.

Therefore, having lived experience in an area of our work would be advantageous. We are particularly interested in applications from individuals who have legal expertise (ideally in the non-profit sector), or expertise in Human Resources or Finance.

As a member of the Board of Trustees, you will oversee the strategic direction, governance and financial sustainability of the organisation. You will help ensure that PILC has a clear strategy, that its resources are used effectively, and that its activities remain aligned with its charitable objectives and values. You will also provide constructive support and challenge to the Senior Management Team, helping the organisation to develop, grow and achieve its mission.

Trustees have collective responsibility for the governance of the charity. This means that decisions are made collectively by the Board and trustees share responsibility for those decisions, always acting in the best interests of PILC.

Please note that this is a voluntary position, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. The time commitment for this role is approximately 8-10 days per annum. The Board meets online on the 3rd Monday of every other month from 6-8pm and trustees are required to attend with their cameras on. All Board papers are circulated usually 2 weeks ahead of the meeting. All applicants must be based in the U.K. 

Duties
As a Trustee, you will be expected to:
• Attend bi-monthly Board meetings (held remotely), having read the papers in advance and being prepared to contribute constructively to discussion and decision-making.
• Attend the annual Board away day and Annual General Meeting (AGM).
• Support, promote and provide advice on PILC’s charitable purpose, vision, values and strategic objectives.
• Approve operational strategies, policies, and monitor and evaluate their implementation.
• Oversee PILC’s financial sustainability by reviewing and approving budgets, PILC’s financial statements and monitoring and evaluating financial performance.
• Ensure that the charity is well governed, effectively managed and compliant with its legal and regulatory obligations.
• Support the effective management of risk and ensure that appropriate systems of internal control are in place.
• Provide appropriate support, constructive challenge and accountability to the Director in the exercise of their delegated authority.
• Keep informed about developments affecting PILC, the non-profit legal sector and the wider operating environment.
• Contribute to the regular review and continuous improvement of the Board's effectiveness and governance arrangements.
• Exercise independent judgement, act with reasonable care and skill, and always act in good faith in the best interests of PILC’s, managing any actual or potential conflicts of interest appropriately.
• Act as an ambassador for PILC, promoting its work and using your skills, knowledge, experience and networks to support the organisation where appropriate.

What is the purpose of this role?

To provide support to the Project Coordinator in delivering engaging Scam Awareness events within communities across Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire.

What impact does this role have?

Our Scam Awareness Events provide vital information and support to older people, helping them recognise scams, protect themselves from fraud, and access support when needed.

By providing support at these events, you will have the opportunity to liaise directly with people who have been affected by scams or may be vulnerable to them. By supporting community events, you can help older people access information, build confidence, and learn how to protect themselves from scams.

What activities might you be involved in?

Ø  Help set up and pack away event materials and information stands

Ø  Welcome and speak with attendees, helping to create a friendly and inclusive environment

Ø  Chat with members of the public and signpost them to information

Ø  Support people to access digital information using their own devices where appropriate

Ø  Distribute leaflets and awareness materials

Ø  Help raise awareness of current scams and fraud trends

Ø  Support the collection of feedback from attendees

Ø  Pass on questions or concerns to the Project Coordinator when further support is needed

The Role
