We're looking for volunteers to assist with the day to day running of our shops located across north east Essex. Volunteer vacancies are available in various shop locations.

Duties of the role include the following:

(Note - Not all the tasks apply to every shop and will be dependent on which shop; type of tasks required for that area and your level of experience)

• Customer service
• Operating till & cash handling
• Signing customers up to Gift Aid scheme & inputting gift aid data if required
• Preparing donated goods for sale
• Ensuring recyclable goods are put in appropriate place
• Pricing as outlined by the shop manager
• Display and merchandising (may include transferring items from one display to another)
• Stock control
• Sorting donated goods (this may include lifting or moving moderately heavy items such as sacks of donated clothes or boxes containing books in some areas)
• Light cleaning duties and using an iron or steamer to press donated clothes

For coffee shops only:

• Operating coffee machines, serving customers and clearing and wiping down tables
• Ensure good food hygiene, health and safety and fire regulations are adhered to at all times

Training & supervision

• All required training, including till operation, gift aid and health & safety will be provided.
• For coffee shops you will be required to undertake online food hygiene training courses.

Knowledge & experience required

• Some customer service experience would be advantageous
• Ability to remain calm while listening to a customer complaint
• Ability to handle cash
• Excellent communication skills
• Previous experience of working or volunteering in a retail environment desirable
• Ability to use electronic tills and devices
• Friendly and approachable manner

Are you interested in fashion, weddings or proms? Then this could be a fantastic volunteer role for you. The role includes helping brides pick out a dress for their big special day, chatting to the relatives and making the experience one to remember! The St Barnabas Shop in Worthing town Centre offer a wide range of beautiful affordable outfits, including wedding dresses, suits and prom dresses.

You’ll get the chance to meet new people and make friends, plus you’ll be part of a fantastic team of volunteers. We are ideally looking for assistance on a Saturday and one day during the week, however please do get in touch to discuss availability.

Our shops help raise vital funds, and volunteering with us is a great way to make a difference, meet new people, and join a fantastic team.

On site we have two shops to volunteer in. The Showroom is Martlets primary furniture and home goods store and the Discount Shop is home to our £1 clothing rails. Both are hubs for our local community to share stories and bag a bargain! We work together with the warehouse to take in the majority of donations for the charity.

Volunteering in our shops offers a variety of exciting tasks. From sorting and pricing donations to spotting hidden gems, you'll roll up your sleeves in the backroom and assist on the shop floor. Engaging with customers is key, whether you're serving with a smile, working the till or helping donors complete Gift Aid forms.

MINDSET is a brand‑new men’s wellbeing and personal growth charity — and we’re looking for a highly organised, reliable volunteer to join us as our Admin Manager & Committee Secretary.

Our mission is to help men build resilience, confidence, emotional awareness, and healthier coping skills through practical, reflective, skills‑based support. To launch successfully, we need strong, consistent admin support to keep everything running smoothly.

If you can spare just a few hours a month and enjoy organising, coordinating, and supporting a small team, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

We’re looking for someone who can help us:

• Provide admin support across our start‑up charity

• Act as Secretary for our Steering Group and committees

• Schedule meetings and send reminders

• Prepare agendas and take minutes

• Keep documents organised and up to date

• Support volunteer onboarding and record‑keeping

• Help maintain simple systems and processes

• Ensure communication flows smoothly across the team

Your role will be central to keeping MINDSET structured, organised, and ready to grow.

About this role 

You will be one of the leaders in your local charity shop making a difference to your local community whilst helping other volunteers to have a great experience. You will be required to take on Scope’s level 1 training course when you start. You will work through the training with your manager so you have the chance to ask lots of questions and feel confident in your role.

Your role may include: 

• supporting the shop manager and assistant shop manager 
• supporting other volunteers 
• delegating tasks 
• supervising young volunteers 
• handling deliveries
• banking and cashing up 
• being a key-holder, opening and closing the shop

When and where 

You will be in our Scope Gillingham shop, 45 High Street, Gillingham, Dorset, SP8 4AA. We are flexible on the times you would like to volunteer. We’d love your help for a couple of hours a week, but if you can give more time that would help us even more.
