This position is a Trustee role, sitting on and managing Hidayah's Board of Trustees. The Chair of Hidayah provides strategic leadership to Hidayah, ensuring the organization remains aligned with its mission to support and advocate for LGBTQ+ Muslims. The Chair will guide the Board of Trustees in effective governance and act as an ambassador for the charity within both the Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities.

What are the key responsibilities of this role?

This role will have the following duties, but are not limited to:

Leadership and Governance:

· Provide leadership to the Board, ensuring that Trustees fulfil their duties and responsibilities for the effective governance of the charity.

· Oversee the Board of Trustees’ operation, ensuring its members work collaboratively and effectively.

· Ensure the charity complies with its constitution, governing documents, charity law, and other relevant legislation/regulations.

Strategy and Planning:

· Lead the development and implementation of the charity’s annual strategic plan, ensuring alignment with the needs of LGBTQ+ Muslims.

· Liaise with the Secretary in writing the annual report outlining Hidayah’s impact and achievements

· Work with the Board of Trustees to ensure that strategic objectives are effectively executed and serve the community

· Liaising with the HR & Recruitment Trustee regarding a portfolio of policies to ensure the smooth running of Hidayah

Risk Management:

· Ensure appropriate risk management policies and procedures are in place and adhered to.

· Regularly review and address potential risks to the charity’s operations and reputation.

Board of Trustees Management:

· Chair monthly Board meetings effectively, ensuring decisions are taken in a timely manner and that actions are followed up.

· Facilitate a positive and inclusive Board culture where diverse viewpoints are encouraged and respected.

· Manage all Trustees at Hidayah

Advocacy and Representation:

· Act as an ambassador for the charity, promoting its work within both the Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities and to a wider audience.

· Represent the charity at key events, meetings, and functions, and develop relationships with key stakeholders and partners.

Financial Oversight:

· Oversee the charity’s financial health, ensuring it operates within its means and maintains proper financial control and accountability.

· Work with the Treasurer and the finance team to ensure the Board of Trustees receives accurate and timely financial information.

· Act as a signatory for Hidayah’s bank account and financial operations.

· To seek out partnerships, sponsors and endorsements from individuals and organisations.

What do we expect from the Chair of Hidayah?

Please note that you must agree with and fit the criteria below to be eligible to volunteer in this role:

Essential:

· Demonstrable experience in a leadership role within a charity, non-profit, or similar organization.

· Strong understanding of governance best practices and charity law.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive culture.

· Strategic thinker with the ability to translate vision into actionable plans.

· Strong financial acumen and experience overseeing budgets and financial planning.

· Passion for the charity’s mission and commitment to its values, with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ Muslims.

Desirable:

· Previous experience as a Chair or in a senior non-executive role.

· Experience in fundraising and development activities.

· Established network within the Muslim and LGBTQ+ communities and among relevant stakeholders.

Terms of Appointment:

· The Chair will be appointed for an initial term of 3 years, which may be renewed for a further term(s).

· This is a voluntary position; however, expenses incurred in fulfilling the role will be reimbursed as approved by the Board of Trustees in line with Hidayah’s policies.

All volunteers are expected to join Hidayah's Membership and Hidayah Discord server, read all Hidayah policies read, understand and agree with the constitution of Hidayah (available on our website).

How much commitment is required?

The hours are flexible around your schedule. All Trustees volunteers are expected to:

· Attend monthly meetings to update on tasks, progress etc.

· Aim to attend all other planning meetings as necessary

· Attend Hidayah events where geographically possible

· Add to and maintain the administration of our file-sharing system ‘Google Drive’ to ensure it’s up to date with clear records, templates and forms

· Check and respond to emails in a timely manner

· Contribute to the communications group (via Discord) and stay up to date with Hidayah developments

· Keep up to date with Hidayah communication and organisational developments

We are the Global Network of Civil Society Organisations for Disaster Reduction (GNDR),  the largest global network of civil society organisations working to strengthen the resilience of people most at risk from disasters and climate change. With two trustees nearing the end of their terms, we are now recruiting two new trustees to join our Board at an exciting moment as we prepare to launch our 2026–2030 global strategy.

What we’re looking for

We are looking for individuals who can bring strategic insight, sound judgement, and a commitment to equity and localisation. While all trustees share collective responsibility for GNDR’s governance, we are specifically seeking two candidates with the following professional expertise to strengthen the Board’s capacity in these areas:

• Professional expertise in Finance (e.g., financial management, audit, budgeting, risk)
• Professional expertise in Human Resources (e.g., people & culture, organisational development, HR policy)

All trustees are expected to uphold the following core criteria:

• Commitment to GNDR’s mission, values, and global network
• Strategic thinking, independent judgement, and collaborative working
• Strong communication skills and willingness to contribute actively
• Understanding of (or willingness to learn about) the responsibilities of charity trusteeship

Representation and eligibility

Trustees must be eligible under UK charity law to serve as charity trustees and company directors.

Terms of office

• Voluntary, unpaid role with all reasonable expenses reimbursed
• Three‑year term, renewable by Board agreement
• Approx. six days per year, plus preparation time, including quarterly board meetings, global board meetings, training, and occasional events
• Trustee indemnity insurance provided

This position is a Trustee role, sitting on Hidayah's board. The HR & Recruitment Lead provides strategic leadership, governance oversight, and guidance on all human resources and recruitment matters to enable Hidayah to operate effectively and sustainably. This role sits at board level and works collaboratively with fellow Trustees to ensure strong people management practices aligned with Hidayah’s mission, values and legal obligations.

What are the key responsibilities of this role?

This role will have the following duties, but are not limited to:

Strategic Leadership & Governance

• Lead on the development and oversight of Hidayah’s HR and Recruitment strategy
• Ensure HR policies and procedures are robust, legally compliant, and aligned with best practice within the voluntary sector
• Advise the Board on workforce planning, organisational structure, succession planning and volunteer lifecycle management
• Provide strategic oversight of recruitment processes to ensure fairness, transparency and equality
• Oversee risk management relating to HR and people governance
• Support the preparation of HR-related content for the annual report

Recruitment & Workforce Oversight

• Oversee the creation and approval of role descriptions and recruitment materials
• Provide guidance on recruitment panels and selection processes to ensure consistency and inclusivity
• Monitor and evaluate recruitment effectiveness and retention trends
• Support the development of structured onboarding processes
• Ensure appropriate systems are in place for record-keeping and confidentiality

Organisational Development

• Champion a positive, inclusive and values-driven organisational culture
• Advise on volunteer and staff development frameworks
• Oversee training strategy and learning opportunities
• Support conflict resolution and provide guidance on disciplinary or grievance matters when required

What do we expect from the HR & Recruitment Trustee?

Essential:

· Strong administrative and organisational skills.

· Attention to detail and ability to manage sensitive data responsibly.

· Comfortable using Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive).

· Good written and verbal communication skills.

· Commitment to confidentiality and data protection best practices.

· Alignment with the values and mission of Hidayah LGBTQI+.

Desirable:

· Experience using CRM or applicant tracking systems to manage people or processes.

· Previous involvement in recruitment, HR, or volunteer coordination.

· Knowledge of inclusive recruitment and accessibility best practices.

· Understanding of challenges facing LGBTQI+ Muslims and other marginalised groups.

· Experience volunteering or working in a charity or community-based organisation.

How much commitment is required? 

We are flexible around your schedule, most roles require 2-4 hours per week depending on the time of year, current priorities etc. However, the following commitments are in place for all members of the Hidayah Board:

• Attend monthly Trustee meetings and provide updates on HR & Recruitment matters
• Attend regular one-to-one check ins with the Chair
• Attend Hidayah events (where geographically possible)
• Check and respond to emails in a timely manner
• Contribute to Trustee communications (via Discord) and remain engaged with organisational developments
• Provide HR-related information, statements and data for the annual report as required
• Stay up to date with organisational changes, governance responsibilities and sector developments

This role is subject to a 6-month probationary period with a 2-month notice period should you wish to resign.

This role remains in place until the next AGM.

BIND is a collection of projects and people that reduce food waste by bringing people together to create change. We design and deliver projects across sectors that push boundaries and achieve results. We believe change is created not by a handful of people doing sustainability perfectly, but by everyone doing a little something. Find out more about our values and purpose on our website. Our work is split between Magic Hat, Eat Smart and food waste partnerships.

Magic Hat is Newcastle City Centre’s first and only coffee shop, kitchen and events venue dedicated to impacting the UK’s wider food waste problem - positively. Our chefs design menus on-the-day, every day, made from food that's far too good to be wasted. Fresh ideas for ingredients at their best. Magic Hat also operates a volunteer programme, a PAYF shop, an events programme and a hireable meeting space/kitchen. Magic Hat's profits go to supporting Bind's other projects in food waste prevention. After 5 years of trading in Newcastle City Centre, our lease was terminated for the building to get redeveloped. We are currently seeking out a new premises for Magic Hat and designing for how we can continue to challenge in its next iteration.

Eat Smart is a successful primary school educational programme born in the NE of England designed to inspire children and schools to reduce food waste and build sustainable food systems. We deliver engaging resources and learning experiences that empower schools and pupils to have more ownership of their kitchens/dinner halls, improve student wellbeing, and have increased environmental awareness. 

Since 2018 Eat Smart has enabled 70 schools in North East England to rescue their food waste by over 25%, equivalent to saving 6,000 meals worth £13,000 per school, per year, and our expansion to other areas of the UK has already begun. With an ever-growing data set and credibility for school food waste prevention, we have increasing potential to affect school food policy and deliver food waste prevention interventions on a national level.

Bind is expanding its work to ensure food waste prevention, not just redistribution, is at the heart of our mission. Bind works in partnership with businesses, local authorities and community groups to help them reduce their food waste, and reduce their food bills by using surplus food in their kitchens. We are well recognised in the North East and lead various partnerships of public, private and voluntary sector organisations, tasked with reducing food waste at a strategic level.

About the Trustee Role

As a Bind Trustee, you’ll be at the heart of our strategic vision. You’ll make key decisions and help guide our Board and CEOs to maximise Bind’s impact. We are looking for experienced trustees to join our existing team of three, with one or more of the following areas of expertise, although we welcome applications from people with other skills and levels of experience:

1. Strategic Growth and Development

2. Financial control and/or fundraising

3. Policy: education, food and/or sustainability

4. Communications, marketing & PR 

5. Impact, performance and accountability

Time Commitment: 

• Your total time commitment will be between 2-6 hours per month, including board meetings every 6-8 weeks and ongoing problem solving – via email/WhatsApp.

• Meetings are a mix of online and in-person. You will be expected to prepare adequately for and attend meetings, as well as contribute to the success of Bind in other ways (e.g. through committee work, advocacy and attending events).

Essential Qualities of All Directors

• Commitment to Bind’s aims, objectives and core values

• Passion for creating behavioural change around the issue of food waste

• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of being a Trustee

• Be familiarised with Bind’s constitution

• Strategic and forward looking vision in relation to our aims and objectives.

Key Responsibilities

You will be collectively responsible for the effective governance and oversight of the charity, ensuring it is well-run, financially sound and delivering its charitable purposes:

• You’ll act in the charity’s best interests, advancing its charitable objects and acting with reasonable care and skill

• You’ll ensure compliance with the charity’s governing document, charity law and regulation

• You’ll provide strategic direction, agreeing the charity’s mission, values and long-term priorities

• You’ll oversee finances, ensuring appropriate financial controls are in place, resources are used responsibly, and assets are safeguarded

• You’ll manage risk, including reputational, financial and operational risk

• You’ll ensure accountability, monitoring performance and impact and acting transparently

• You’ll uphold safeguarding, equality and ethical standards, ensuring appropriate policies and practices are in place

• You’ll participate fully in Trustee Board meetings, decision-making and any sub-committees

• You’ll act as an ambassador for the charity and support its aims externally where appropriate
