THE ROLE

The Safeguarding Trustee acts as the Board’s lead on safeguarding, providing strategic oversight, guidance, and challenge to ensure the highest standards of safeguarding practice across the organisation.

You will:

• Provide strategic oversight of safeguarding policy and practice
• Support and challenge the organisation to maintain high standards
• Ensure safeguarding is embedded in governance and decision-making
• Ensure safeguarding risks are appropriately reflected in the risk register
• Work closely with the Chair, Charity Director, and safeguarding lead to promote a strong safeguarding culture across the organisation.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR

• Experience or knowledge of safeguarding children and young people
• An understanding of safeguarding legislation or guidance
• Good judgement, integrity, and the ability to think strategically

Trustee experience is not essential—we will support your development.

Role description attached provides more information on the role and responsibilities.   For this Trustee role we are particularly seeking individuals with demonstrable  experience in Child protection from the perspective of the Family Court, in particular with insights into safeguarding.

Commitment

• Each year, our Trustees are expected to attend four regular board meetings, from 5 to 7 pm in Central London. In addition, Trustees would attend potentially four meetings of any sub-committee of which they are a member. Further time is required for reading of papers before meetings.
• You would also receive invitations to various Childhood First events in the communities, which are optional but strongly encouraged to help better understand the work and feel a connection to the charity.
• We are particularly cognisant of the need to be flexible in the demands we make of Trustee colleagues. Each year there is an opportunity to meet with the Chair for mutual feedback and to discuss ways in which Trustees might wish to develop their roles.​

Successful candidates will be invited to attend a board meeting will be on 15 September 2026 in Central London.

Based at Fawcett Estate Community Hall in Clapton, Hackney, we run a Community Food Hub, alternative education, SEN support, and community programmes including Jumping Beans. • Maintain simple, useful reporting structures — updates, feedback, outcomes

• Spot issues early and come with solutions, not just problems

Operational Support

• Work closely with leadership to maintain structure across delivery

• Support onboarding and coordination of volunteers within programmes

• Ensure consistency in how sessions are delivered, every time

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers in Swindon to befriend and mentor a young person in care.

You will not be expected to lead sessions alone or take on staff responsibilities. A staff member or an activity leader will be there to support you throughout.

You do not need experience of working with children and young people, just an interest in their development and welfare. Full training and support are provided 

Here’s a few of the young people we have waiting for a volunteer: 

• Amy (12) lives with an older carer, she would like an active Independent Visitor who can do sports with her.

ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY
