Our small friendly Charity Shop in South Westminster
As well as being an important source of revenue for the Centre, the shop on Horseferry Road is the public face of the Cardinal Hume Centre to the residents and workers of Westminster. It can be a very busy environment with lots of regular customers. You will be part of a friendly, international team! You will receive excellent support and opportunities to learn team skills and customer service. You can obtain a reference for future employers.
How does this role make a difference?
You will be part of the fundraising team, raising funds to support the work of the Cardinal Hume Centre and promoting the work of the Centre to the public. Typically, the Charity Shop raises in the region of £50,000 per year.
What will you be doing?
Flexibility will be given where possible, but in general, volunteers will undertake the following tasks as part of this role:
· Customer service on the till
· Cashing up at the end of the day and walking the takings round to the reception and handing in to Finance Team
· Greeting and helping customers
· Replenishing the stock on the shop floor
· Sorting donations
· Helping present top items in window display and around the shop
· Promoting the work of the Centre to the public

If you want to develop in this role, we are keen to support you. There are more responsibilities you can take on in the shop, for example; opening and closing the shop, cashing up at the end of the day and helping with the induction of new volunteers. Let us know if this interests you. We also have employment advisors who can provide employment support. Furthermore, if you want to expand your experience in the voluntary sector, you can combine your role in the shop with a volunteer role elsewhere in the organisation.
What are we looking for?
No special qualifications are needed to work in our shop, as relevant training will be given, however, we will be asking for the following qualities:
· Over 16+
· Good spoken English needed – at least Entry Level 3
· The ability to contribute to a positive team culture and atmosphere
· Be able to provide a friendly, high-quality service to customers
· A commitment to equal opportunities and to treating all individuals who visit or work in the shop with dignity and respect
· Physically fit - able to lift light bags and boxes and to comfortably use the stairs between the shop floor and the stock room. Manual handling training will be given.
What is the time commitment?
The shop opening hours are 10am – 4.30pm, Monday – Friday. A full or half day (10 – 1pm or 1 – 4.30pm) is ideal, but we are flexible and are grateful for even a couple of hours help each week. Ideally, volunteers will commit to a period of at least 4 months.
How will you be supported?
· You will be supported and trained in all areas of retail and customer service by the Charity Shop Manager and the Assistant Shop Manager.
· You will receive a Centre induction from a Volunteer Coordinator
· You will be reimbursed for reasonable and agreed ‘out-of-pocket’ expenses such as travel and also lunch if working a full day.
· For volunteers who stay for more than three months, we are happy to provide a reference.
The Centre enables families, children and young people to overcome poverty and avoid homelessness.

About our Port Talbot Shop:
Our Port Talbot shop, located in the Aberafan Shopping Centre, is one of our two outlet-style shops.
It offers a mix of full-priced items and mainly clearance stock from our other stores, ensuring we maximise income from all donations.
The management team spearhead a dedicated team of volunteers who manage a significant turnover of stock weekly.
The team relishes any opportunity to dress up and are often seen in a variety of fancy-dress costumes.
Considerations:
Age requirement: 16+
Location:Unit 28 Aberafan Shopping Centre, Port Talbot SA13 1PB
Commitment:Our shops operate Monday-Sunday, 9am-5pm and we appreciate any time you can spare, but ideally at least 2 hours per week.
Shifts will be discussed during your informal chat.
Background checks: We will ask you to provide us with the details of two referees.
We are also looking for volunteers with a knowledge of jewellery and books.
Activities include:
• Providing a warm and friendly welcome to all customers entering the shop;
• Helping customers to locate items they are looking for;
• Serving customers at the till;
• Taking donations and promoting Gift Aid;
• Selling and processing our raffle/lottery tickets;

What is a Warehouse Assistant?
As a WA, you would sort the food that we receive from our food partners and pick daily orders for charities. It’s a great way to keep fit and all you need is a sturdy pair of hands!
What will I be doing?
- Working as part of a team to manually sort and store large deliveries of surplus food
- Helping to assemble the daily deliveries of food for local charities and community groups
- Making sure the food is within use by dates and handled safely
- You may also be asked to contact our charity members to talk through the food we have available to create their weekly food order
What we need you to be:
- Able to perform physical tasks including lifting and loading
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills to record quantities and types of food
- Work well as part of a team
- Happy to complete tasks independently according to instruction
- Adaptable – managing surplus can be unpredictable so day to day tasks can vary
- Positive, friendly, and enthusiastic about tackling food waste and food poverty

We are looking for an enthusiastic events assistant to join the team in our exciting new community space! Plateful Cafe is a recently established charity that seeks to help refugees in the surrounding area into employment within the food and hospitality sector.
We have opened a community cafe selling delicious Middle Eastern food! Our cafe is staffed by people with refugee status and experiences of forced migration who are being trained to work the food industry, as well as dedicated volunteers like you. The role:
- Help organise monthly community dinners featuring three course meals from around the globe to enable the charity to engage with and attract donors.
- Help with running the dinner on the daywith tasks including welcoming the guests, serving food and drinks, take payments, setting up and clearing, etc.
- In a team plan and organise other events and fundraisers throughout the year, for example refugee week.
- Work with the marketing volunteers, providing details of upcoming events for promotion; take pictures and quotes at the event.
Skills & Requirements:
- Prior experience of events planning and organisation
- A passion and keenness to engage in community-based work to support refugees and serve the local community
- Good organisation skills including: effective time management, punctuality and delegation of tasks.
- A flexible and proactive attitude to working
- Good responsiveness to emails/ text/ whatsapp
- Practical skills to help prepare and set-up the café for events
- Able to work well in a team and communicate effectively with the rest of the staff and visitors of the cafe

Desirable but not required:
- Prior experience working with refugees, people seeking asylum or other vulnerable groups
- Prior experience of involvement in charity fundraising events

Key Volunteer Activities:
- Assisting with the donations of stock, by sorting and steaming and preparing for shop floor
- Maintaining good stock rotation and levels at all times
- Helping with visual merchandising when needed

- Supporting drivers to complete all relevant paperwork
- Planning routes, sorting food, picking orders, loading and unloading vans
- Assisting with maintenance of the vans including cleaning
What we need you to be:
- Minimum of 18 years old
- Good at map reading and/or able to use a Sat Nav system
- Positive, friendly and enthusiastic about tackling food waste and/or food poverty
- Able to perform physical tasks including lifting and loading
- Good with numbers, identifying different foods, writing clearly
- Able to work effectively and use your initiative in a fast-paced environment
- Able to work well in a team and on your own

Communications:
The Facilities team leaders will regularly provide you with any information updates, training opportunities and upcoming events appropriate to your role.
