1. Introduction from the Board
Thank you for your interest in joining Girls in Sport as our new Fundraising Trustee. Established in 2017, we are a registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) dedicated to improving the lives of young people.We are currently working in West Africa.
Sport for Social Impact
We believe that sport can be a powerful conduit for social change - from the grassroots.In sport we are challenging gender stereotypes. With a focus on locally led interventions in protected settings, our initiatives integrate physical activity and nutrition, that focuses on facilitating grassroots initiatives in driving forward attitudes to gender in communities, by sport empowerment, and fostering literacy outcomes for girls at risk, or affected by GBV, trauma, FGM, and child marriage. We work to empower girls in some of the world's hardest to reach settings.
As we move through 2026, we are looking for a strategic leader to help us diversify our funding and scale our impact in Sierra Leone and wider communities where we replicate our model.
2. About Girls in Sport
Our Mission:
We use the soft power of locally led sport programmes to promote sustainable development in advancing gender parity in communities facing poverty, conflict, and gender-related risks. Our Sponsor a Champion initiative uses sport and access to education to foster equal opportunities and support safeguarding awareness, literacy, and child protection.
Key Areas of Impact:
- Sport for Social Impact: Using sport to challenge attitudes to gender, and to empower young women to build self-reliance, resilience, and confidence to achieve the same aspirations as the boys.
- Education & Literacy: Closing the gap in literacy between boys and girls through targeted school sponsorship interventions.
- Social Welfare: Beneficiary and community sensitisation in safeguarding and protection, targeting the most at-risk beneficiaries, and signposting pathways to social welfare and trauma-support stakeholders in-Country.

3. Job Description: Fundraising Trustee
Role Purpose:
The Fundraising Trustee will advise the board and head of programmes in the provision of strategic oversight of our income generation, ensuring Girls in Sport has the resources needed to sustain its international programmes. You will oversee the development of a diverse funding mix, with a specific focus on high-value partnerships and institutional grants.
Key Responsibilities:
- Governance: Act as a member of the Board of Trustees, sharing legal and financial responsibility for the charity’s management.
- Fundraising Strategy: Provide advice and support on strategy, focusing on Trusts & Foundations, Major Donors, and Corporate Partnerships.
- Income Generation: Champion fundraising at Board level and encourage supporters to contribute to income-generation efforts.
- Compliance: Ensure all activities adhere to fundraising regulations and best practices, including the Code of Fundraising Practice.
- Ambassadorship: Act as a spokesperson for the charity, promoting its work and helping to raise its profile within philanthropic networks.
4. Person Specification
Essential:
- Commitment to the charity’s mission and values regarding gender equality, sustainable development, and youth empowerment.
- Robust knowledge and experience of fundraising (e.g., trusts, corporates, or major donors).
- Strategic thinker, able to balance long-term planning with practical advice.
- Understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of charity trusteeship.
- Experience of fundraising in an international development or small charity context.
- Existing networks that could support the charity’s fundraising efforts.
Desirable:
- Familiarity with Sierra Leone, West Africa or regional sub-Sahara socio-economic contexts and cross-border programming challenges in navigating funding and grant-making agencies

5. Commitment & Timeline
- Time Commitment: Approximately two hours per month.
- Meetings: We currently hold bi-annual Board meetings (online/in-person mix) plus occasional sub-group meetings.
- Term: two years, renewable three times.

Norfolk Tennis is the county governing body for tennis and padel in Norfolk and a volunteer-led Charitable Incorporated Organisation (Charity No. 1203480). We work in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association to support clubs, venues, coaches and players across the county, helping more people enjoy the physical, social and community benefits of tennis and padel. Our work aligns with the LTA’s “Tennis Opened Up” strategy, which aims to make the sport accessible, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. Norfolk Tennis is governed by a Board of Trustees supported by a volunteer Management Committee representing clubs, venues and key development areas across the county. As tennis and padel continue to grow, Norfolk Tennis is seeking individuals to join its Board of Trustees and contribute strategic leadership to the development of tennis and padel across the county.
About the Trustee Role
Trustees play a vital role in ensuring Norfolk Tennis is well governed, financially sustainable and strategically focused. Working collaboratively with fellow Trustees and the Management Committee, Trustees help ensure the organisation operates effectively as a charity while delivering meaningful impact for tennis and padel across the county.
Trustees are responsible for:
- Supporting the strategic direction of Norfolk Tennis
- Ensuring strong governance, accountability and compliance
- Providing independent professional expertise and oversight
- Acting in the best interests of the charity and its beneficiaries
- Helping ensure resources are used effectively to support tennis development
Trustees attend periodic Trustee meetings (typically online) and may attend Management Committee meetings where helpful to maintain alignment between governance and operational delivery.
We are particularly interested in individuals who can contribute leadership or professional expertise in the following areas.
Governance & Charity Law Trustee
To support strong governance and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, Norfolk Tennis is seeking a volunteer trustee with expertise in charity law.
This role focuses on providing guidance on legal responsibilities, governance best practice and risk management to support the organisation’s long-term stability and integrity.
Key contributions include:
• Advising the Board of Trustees on charity law, governance and regulatory requirements
• Supporting compliance with Charity Commission guidance and best practice
• Reviewing governing documents and supporting any required updates
• Providing input on policies, risk management and decision-making processes
• Ensuring the organisation operates within its legal and charitable objectives
• Offering guidance on contracts, partnerships and potential liabilities
This role would suit someone with experience in charity law, governance, legal advisory or regulatory compliance, ideally with an understanding of the charitable or sports sector.
Governance & Safeguarding Trustee
This role helps ensure Norfolk Tennis maintains the highest standards of governance, safeguarding and regulatory compliance.
Working alongside the County Safeguarding Officer and fellow trustees, this role supports the Board in maintaining robust policies, procedures and governance frameworks that reflect both charity law and LTA safeguarding expectations.
Key contributions include:
- Supporting strong governance structures and trustee responsibilities
- Providing oversight of safeguarding frameworks and best practice
- Ensuring appropriate policies and reporting processes are in place
- Advising on governance matters including risk management and compliance
- Promoting a culture of safe, responsible and ethical sport across the county
This role would suit someone with experience in governance, safeguarding, compliance, law or risk management.
Inclusion & Disability Trustee
Norfolk Tennis is committed to ensuring tennis and padel are open and accessible to all communities.
The Inclusion & Disability Trustee helps champion equality, diversity and accessibility across the county, supporting initiatives that widen participation and remove barriers to involvement.
The role includes:
- Supporting Norfolk Tennis in embedding Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) principles
- Championing inclusive participation for disabled players and under-represented groups
- Advising on inclusive programme development and community engagement
- Supporting initiatives linked to the LTA’s Open Court disability tennis programme
- Helping identify partnerships with organisations supporting inclusive sport
This role would suit someone with experience in EDI leadership, disability sport, community engagement, education or inclusion policy.
Who We Are Looking For

Experience in tennis is not essential.
We particularly welcome individuals with backgrounds in:

Most importantly, we are looking for people who bring sound judgement, integrity, collaborative working and a commitment to supporting tennis across Norfolk.
Time Commitment
The role is designed to fit alongside professional and personal commitments.

- monthly (or every 5-6 weeks) Management Committee meetings (normally online/Zoom)
