Our challenge
Brain tumours do not discriminate and they do not respect boundaries. They can strike anyone, at any age. And they strike quickly.

The Support Team at The Brain Tumour Charity are aiming to address the clear gap in emotional support available to those affected by a brain tumour diagnosis, by expanding their counselling service. We know the difference that talking therapy can make and our goal is to reach more people, ensuring everyone that wants it, gets the support that they need.

How can you help?
As a Counselling Assessment Volunteer for this service, you will be the first point of call for new clients entering in to the service. This role will require you to talk to a wide range of people - from those newly diagnosed, to others at end of life and also bereaved. As a Counselling Assessment Volunteer, you will be required to:

• Carry out pre-booked counselling assessments with clients who have self-referred themselves into the counselling service
• Gather information through the assessment about the client’s circumstances, explore their needs, explain how the service can help and discuss with them whether the counselling service is suitable
• Confidently follow our safeguarding process, to ensure risk is assessed and appropriate steps are taken to safeguard each client’s well-being
• Observe confidentiality in line with our organisational policy
• Keep accurate and appropriate records on our internal database

We’re looking for...
Someone who is empathetic and supportive in nature, and who is excited by the opportunity to bring this counselling service to the wider brain tumour community. You will also need:

• Experience in providing emotional support to others, perhaps through another role focusing on bereavement, mental health or life limiting illnesses
• Ideally have had previous training in counselling, mental health first aid, or other relevant course
• Ability to work autonomously
• Relevant IT skills in order to maintain appropriate and accurate records on our counselling database
• As this is a home-based role, you will need access to a telephone and computer that you are happy to use for this service

Time commitment
We are looking for a commitment of 2 hours per week (minimum) which would allow you to carry out 2 assessments. All assessments must be carried out between 9:30am-4pm, Monday - Friday, and we would ask all volunteers to work on a rota system, volunteering at the same times each week.

Practical considerations
You will receive a full induction to The Brain Tumour Charity and any specific training for the role, as well as ongoing direction from one of the team, who will be your key contact. We carry out references for all individuals who will be volunteering with us on a regular basis. Volunteers will be required to complete some internal training, data protection and disclosure documentation before commencing the role. Volunteers must be over 18. We may close applications early if we recieve a high number of applications for this role. If we receive a high volume of applications, we may close the role early, so we’d encourage you to apply at your earliest opportunity.

“Solta o Jogo” is a vibrant cultural competition and festival celebrating Brazilian heritage through Capoeira, music, dance, acrobatics, and a Brazilian arts & crafts fair. Hosted at Kingston University Townhouse, the event invites the community to participate in free performances, workshops, and exhibitions promoting cross-cultural understanding.

As part of this initiative, we are seeking a Personal Assistant to support daily coordination, scheduling, and communication tasks across departments. This remote volunteer opportunity is ideal for someone who is detail-oriented, proactive, and looking to gain experience in nonprofit administration while contributing to a meaningful community-driven programme. 

Position Overview:
The Personal Assistant will be responsible for organising meetings, managing calendars, supporting internal communications, and assisting in day-to-day administrative operations. We are looking for reliable, supportive people with excellent communication skills. A mature and calm attitude is needed in order to be able to talk to people during a sometimes bewildering and emotional experience. Volunteers must be willing to undergo a period of observations and shadowing, as well as attend a 3 day training course. A minimum commitment of one day (9:00am - 5:00pm) per fortnight is asked for. Our fundraising event helpers have the exciting and varied role of helping at local fundraising events - such as cakes sales, barn dances, quiz nights – and everything in between

You can expect us to

What we need from you

You’ll be:

· help set up and/or man stalls at events

Time expectation

This role is really flexible! You could choose to volunteer at one event for a couple of hours or attend multiple fundraising events.

We’ll keep you up to date with upcoming local events where volunteers are needed. You’ll then be able to choose which events you’d like to volunteer at and how many hours you’d like to give. However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.

• Answering calls from our shops, helping to resolve concerns
• Answering contacts from our customers, learning how to deliver great customer service
• Working on our retail operations online support system, dealing with suppliers and shops online and by phone
• Creating marketing assets to send to shops
• Joining teams working on specific projects like training packs, cost evaluation or shop merchandising
• Creating social media posts for our shop colleagues to share
• Learning how to use word, powerpoint and excel.

Every day is different, we manage lots of different projects whilst working on our annual plan. We can find a project to suit everyone.

Volunteering in the office could enable you to gain the skills needed to support searches for employment.

You must be over 18 for this role.

When and where

This role can be remote so can be worked from anywhere in UK or you can come into the Here East office one or two days per week.

Depending on your availability we are suggesting 4 hours per week during office hours, but would welcome any suggested volunteering patterns.

Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.

• Conduct exit interviews (virtually), document feedback, and share insights with the Talent Advisory team to identify trends and improve retention.
• Collaborate with Legal, IT, and managers to ensure the timely return of equipment and access revocation.

HR Records & Compliance

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date HR records (digital and physical), including contracts, right-to-work documents, and visa expiry dates.
• Prepare audit-ready documentation for internal and external compliance reviews (e.g., GDPR, ISO standards).
• Track and renew right-to-work checks, visas, and other legal requirements, flagging expiries proactively.

Administrative Support

• Assist the Talent Advisory team with administrative tasks, including drafting ER case correspondence, updating HRIS data, and generating reports.
• Manage HR system updates (e.g., employee status changes, promotions) and ensure data integrity across platforms.
• Coordinate team calendars, meetings, and training sessions to optimise workflows in a remote setting.

Data Protection & Security

• Serve as the first point of contact for data protection queries, ensuring compliance with GDPR and company policies.
• Train employees and managers on the secure handling of sensitive HR information in a remote work environment.
• Monitor access permissions to HR systems and escalate potential breaches to the Manager: Talent Advisory.

Qualifications

• Experience: 1+ years in HR administration, data management, or a similar role. Exposure to remote work environments is a plus.
• Skills:
• Exceptional attention to detail and organisational skills.
• Proficiency in HRIS platforms (e.g., BambooHR, Workday), Google Products, and virtual collaboration tools.
• Strong written communication skills for drafting policies, reports, and employee correspondence.
• Knowledge:
• Understanding of GDPR, UK right-to-work requirements, and fundamental employment law.
• Familiarity with D&I principles and their application to HR processes.
