Veterans Community Occupational Therapist 

Location: Remote working

We have two positions available – one based in the North of England and one based in the South of England.

• North: Preferably based in North-West England, including Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Blackpool and surrounding areas.
• South: Preferably based in Salisbury or the surrounding areas.

We are open to candidates who live further afield, where the location is within a reasonable travelling distance for the community-based requirements of the role.

Both positions involve community-based travel as part of the role, as well as occasional UK-wide travel to attend face-to-face clinical and wider team meetings (approximately 4–5 times per year).

As a Veterans Community Occupational Therapist, you will: 

• Provide community-based occupational therapy input to veterans, supporting their physical health, independence and day-to-day functioning. 

• Work with veterans and, where appropriate, their families and support networks to assess needs and identify practical, person-centred solutions. 

• Support veterans to navigate healthcare and support pathways, promoting independence and wellbeing. 

• Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside Community Nurses and other professionals. 

• Contribute to education, outreach and engagement activity to support the Armed Forces Community.

Policy development

· Provide expertise on the relevant evidence, insight, and policy context to enable the development of new innovative policy ideas and solutions that deliver on our strategic priorities.

· Manage the development of substantial and credible policy outputs, including briefings, reports, submissions to government departments and their agencies, parliamentary committees, and other UK and international organisations as appropriate.

About you

• Full professional membership, registration and accreditation with UKCP, BPS, BPC, BACP or equivalent.

• At least five years’ post-qualification experience.

• Experience of working therapeutically with people who have experienced childhood trauma.

• Experience of clinical management or management within an organisational setting.

• Experience of working across different cultural contexts and a strong commitment to culturally sensitive practice.

About the role

The role involves managing the care coordination service area assessment and organising the allocation of care-coordination tasks, working alongside the Adult Team Manager and Clinical Services Manager as part of the intake panel and holding a caseload offering care coordination to survivors of torture. This role ensures that service users at Freedom from Torture have a central role in planning their care planning and are supported to access the most appropriate support for their needs.

Working together with our therapists, and legal and welfare staff as part of a multi-disciplinary team, the ideal candidate will be a Registered Mental Health Nurse, Social Worker or Occupational Therapist with significant experience of working in the mental health sector with complex mental health presentations and will have a passion for working with asylum seekers, refugees and survivors of torture.

The role will include delivering line management and supervision to care co-ordinators within the team and may at times include delivering supervision to social work students, lived experience support workers as well as other clinical staff and approved volunteers.

The Senior Care coordinator also works closely with the national pain lead in support of pain management for our clients, which involves linking with, GPs, community physio services and at times the role may include running and facilitating 1:1 and group psychological pain management interventions or stabilisation strategies alongside clinical colleagues.

The role will also involve providing clinical manager cover – i.e. on-site managerial cover and duty cover in line with the clinical cover procedure, and to provide guidance for clinicians with urgent queries. The Senior Care coordinator will work alongside the National safeguarding leads to support clients and colleagues by attending internal and external safeguarding/ child protection meetings and provide consultation to line reports and other colleagues around managing safeguarding concerns and regularly updating and reviewing our internal safeguarding tracker.

We are looking for a calm, resourceful and committed psychotherapist who has extensive experience in the field of mental health, to be our Clinical Director.  They will work alongside of the Operations Director, in a co-leadership role in running the organisation and in supporting our aims of providing affordable counselling and psychotherapy to the local community. They will need to be able to look outward and liaise with other local mental health services, providers and funders and also to look inwards at the structure and health of our growing team of practitioners and the needs and requirements of our client group.

Phoenix Therapy Practice opened in April 2019 and is a not for profit, Community Interest Company. We offer a wide range of psychological therapies to clients seeking help with mild, moderate, and severe mental health problems. Our aim is to provide high quality counselling and therapy at an affordable cost depending upon the circumstances of each individual client. Our community of over 55 practitioners work together to enhance the development of the service and the inter-relationships within the organization, through regular business meetings, process groups and reflective groups. We operate from our two practices at 2 Osmond Road, Hove and 14 St George’s Place, Brighton. Our income comes via room rental and grants. 

Purpose of Job:  To work with the Operations Director in the Co-Leadership of Phoenix Therapy Practice in its provision of services and its strategic consolidation and development. To take clinical responsibility for the therapeutic practice of the organisation, to monitor the makeup of the practitioner team and trainees and to take on new people as required. To work with the referrals team in the management of all client services.

Hours: 15 hours per week to be organised as required across the week.

1. Strategic and Organisational Leadership

Work collaboratively with the Operations Director in the co-leadership of Phoenix Therapy Practice.

Work with the Board to report on all service provision and development.

Contribute to fund raising applications for low-cost therapy and writing feedback reports to funders.

2. Clinical ( Clients)

To carry out initial consultations as required

To review all initial consultation reports and with the other members of the Referrals team, to allocate to the most appropriate practitioner. 

To liaise with the Practice manager in dealing with queries from clients and allocation to therapy and any other clinical issues

To monitor the main email inbox and  liaise directly with clients and practitioners regarding clinical issues, either by email or phone, when required.

To have an overview of Phoenix therapy groups and liaise with the practitioners who run them.

To deal with any concerns or complaints from users, being mindful of referral to the Board for consideration where needed.

To liaise with the Director of Operations in matters of safeguarding.

·To oversee all discharge summaries from practitioners and exit questionnaires from clients

3. Clinical ( Practitioners)

To review on a regular basis the makeup of the practitioner body and to identify any areas of need. 

To consider all applications to join Phoenix, and to interview, with potential supervisors, and to obtain references and follow up.

To support practitioners, and to respond to concerns as appropriate.

To liaise with the supervisors of the student practitioners, on a regular basis.

To meet with the practitioners on placement after their 6 months probationary period and at the end of their placement, to review their position. Having first obtained reports from the supervisors.

To meet with graduate practitioners at the end of their year on the graduate scheme.

To step in, in the event of sudden practitioner departure due to illness or death, and to liaise with the clients as necessary.

To ensure that all practitioners carrying out initial consultations are apprised of the manner of doing these.

The Suicide Bereavement Specialist Manager leads and manages a team of approximately 10–12 Suicide Bereavement Specialists, providing strong and supportive management alongside clear professional accountability and oversight of practice.

The postholder will also maintain a small caseload of approximately 5–10 beneficiaries, enabling them to remain connected to frontline practice and the experiences of people accessing the service.

Scope and Accountability

This is a significant operational management role with responsibility for both people and practice.

The SBS Manager is accountable for ensuring that the SBS team is appropriately managed, beneficiaries are allocated safely and promptly, the quality of support is actively monitored, concerns are addressed rather than allowed to drift, and the Beneficiary Services Manager has an accurate understanding of the performance, capacity and risks within the service.

The postholder is expected to exercise professional judgement and autonomy within their delegated responsibilities while recognising when an issue requires escalation or strategic decision-making by the Beneficiary Services Manager.

Freedom from Torture has an exciting opportunity for a Research Programme Manager to join our team and play a central role in delivering an innovative international mental health research programme funded by a major UK research funder. The programme will explore whether artificial intelligence can safely and effectively support survivors of torture with managing distressing memories. Survivor co-design is central to the programme, ensuring that people with lived experience across diverse cultures, languages and backgrounds meaningfully shape innovation in mental health.

Freedom from Torture is an established charity that has been supporting survivors of torture for over 35 years and has a dedicated donor base. We are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based interventions for people who have survived torture. We provide therapies to improve physical and mental health, medically document torture, and offer legal and welfare support. Our clinical model has been co-designed with survivors of torture and includes a range of interventions, including trauma-focused therapy, psychotherapy, family and couple systemic psychotherapy, group work, pain management and health assessment.

In addition to our treatment services, we expose torture globally, campaign for the rights of survivors and work to hold torturing states to account. About the role

This is a senior research programme management role supporting the delivery of a major externally funded health research programme involving multiple organisations, international collaborators and diverse stakeholder groups. The programme includes research involving human participants and brings together expertise from universities, charities, clinicians, researchers, technologists and people with lived experience.

A defining feature of this programme is its commitment to survivor leadership and co-design. Survivors of torture will play an active role in shaping, informing and governing the research throughout its lifecycle. The successful candidate will therefore work closely with survivor advisors, co-design groups and governance structures to support meaningful participation and ensure that lived experience perspectives are incorporated into programme decision-making, research development and delivery. This commitment to participation is central to the ethos, methodology and success of the programme.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator, the Research Programme Manager will act as the central coordination point across the consortium and will be responsible for leading programme planning, coordinating international partners, supporting governance structures, managing funder reporting and compliance, coordinating financial oversight, supporting research governance and ethics, monitoring programme risks and preparing high-quality reports and briefings for funders, governance bodies and senior stakeholders.

The successful candidate will work closely with Freedom Fron Torture colleagues across clinical services, survivor leadership and empowerment, fundraising, finance, research partners and organisational leadership to ensure successful delivery of programme objectives. This role offers a rare opportunity to work at the intersection of health research, innovation, survivor involvement and international collaboration.

About you

You will be an experienced programme or project management professional with a track record of delivering complex health research programmes. You will have experience of managing externally funded research programmes, working with major research funders, coordinating activity across multiple organisations, supporting governance structures, managing risk and assurance processes, and contributing to financial monitoring and reporting.

You will understand the importance of meaningful involvement of people with lived experience in research and service development. You will have experience of supporting inclusive engagement, co-design, consultation or participation activities and be committed to ensuring that diverse voices influence decision-making, governance and programme delivery.

You will bring excellent communication and relationship-management skills, with the ability to work confidently with academics, clinicians, funders, people with lived experience, senior organisational leaders and colleagues across different professional backgrounds. You will be organised, proactive and able to exercise sound judgement in a complex and fast-moving programme environment.

This role would particularly suit candidates from university or health providers research management, major health research funders, and mental or physical health clinicians with substantial research management experience.

Our policy is that all appointments will be at the start of the salary range but successful candidates will have the opportunity to move up the scale over time. The progression up the salary range is reviewed on an annual basis and subject to affordability. For this role, the salary range is £52,467 per annum to £60,861 per annum (FTE £65,584 to 76,077).
