Development Phase: Visitor Destination Development Manager

Fixed Term to November 2027

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is one of the UK’s fastest growing nature conservation organisations and seeks to appoint a Visitor Destination Development Manager to transform our flagship nature reserves into pioneering places that inspire hope, drive action for nature and open their doors to everyone. 

This is a rare opportunity to project manage a National Heritage Lottery funded development programme at a pivotal moment. You'll oversee specialist consultants across visitor experience, accessibility, commercial development and community stewardship; coordinate our project Steering Group and ensure the programme is rigorously evaluated and reported to our funder. 

But this role is about more than process. You'll bring a wealth of experience and the confidence to drive real change – taking colleagues on the journey with you, building consensus and laying the groundwork for what comes next. Critically, you'll make sure everything we learn shapes the next chapter of development for our Flagship Nature Reserves.

You'll bring proven experience of managing complex, multi-strand programmes, ideally within the heritage, conservation or visitor destination sector, along with a track record of commissioning and managing external consultants to deliver high-quality outcomes. Strong stakeholder management skills are essential as you'll need to bring colleagues along on a shared journey, whilst managing funder relationships and reporting with rigour and care. You'll be able to synthesise complex information into clear recommendations and actionable next steps and communicate with confidence at a senior level. Above all, you'll be collaborative and inclusive, with the drive to embed learning and lasting change within the organisation.

Job Title: Commercial Manager

Reporting To: Head of Retail, Wholesale & Food Service

Salary Range: £36,000 - £38,000 (dependent upon experience)

Location: This is a field‑based role that can be based anywhere in the UK. You’ll manage several large accounts, with regular visits to their headquarters and key events. On average national travel can be expected a couple of times per week.

Working days/hours per week: 35 per week, Monday - Friday, 9am – 5pm

The Felix Project and FareShare have recently merged to form the UK's largest food redistribution charity. Its vision is a UK where good food is never wasted, and nobody goes hungry.

The organisation rescues high quality edible surplus food, from across the food industry and gets it to over 8,000 organisations across the UK who are working to strengthen communities and improve lives.

The charity manages seven depots across London, Suffolk, Merseyside and Hampshire and works with 16 network partners who operate a further 26 regional depots across the UK.

Over the next year our ambition is to rescue enough food nationally to provide nearly 200 million meals, turning an environmental problem into social good with measurable impact for people, planet, and the economy.

Purpose of the Job

Commercial Manager will identify, develop and manage top food partners relationships and strengthen existing business relationships with companies in the food industry, generating value for the partner and to secure growing and sustainable volumes of surplus food for the FareShare Network. For designated top food partners, you will be their day-to-day point of contact with regular face to face contact at all levels.

You will undertake structured, strategic account management, leading and coordinating FareShare’s engagement across our organisation. This will mean agreeing and executing a bespoke joint business plan with each account to get more food, money and strategic support. You will also feedback on ways that we can better support our accounts and improve our services to them. You will work directly and be on-site with top food partners to help identify and overcome the barriers which exist to giving surplus food to people in need as well as increasing money and strategic resource.

You will also be required to work closely with FareShare colleagues within FareShare and across the UK in our partner organisations in order to identify and understand opportunities for creating mutual and shared value.

Duties and Responsibilities

Partnership Management

• Contribute to the development of consistent, structured Joint Business plans with

designated accounts that take into account food, funding and other strategic initiatives to drive growth in food, money and other strategic resources

• Work on behalf of the account to develop and embed services relevant to the account and agreed through the joint business plan – e.g. employability or store level redistribution 

• Execute joint business plans and report internally and externally on progress.

• Research and understand your accounts, including key ESG initiatives, waste streams, key personnel within the organisation that will help drive its success and engage the relevant internal departments through both desked based research and face to face contact.

• Proactively drive account forwards and progress these relationships with regular on-site visits and linking FareShare exec with key contacts.

• Keep up to date with industry and charity insights and ensure this is reflected back strategically across ways of working and account management.

Project and Initiative Management 

• Be responsible for managing and communicating key projects and initiatives to increase food volumes and strategic value, securing support from a range of stakeholders within food partners and across the FareShare network. 

• Work closely with Supply Chain and Logistics, Operations and Network Development teams with the aim of optimising food out to our network

• Develop and lead FareShare cross-departmental strategic activity to enable us to derive maximum value from key food partners including liaising with fundraising, marketing and volunteering teams.

Community Engagement Assistant (Part-Time, Flexible)

The Community Engagement Assistant will be a public face for Dressability, a charity providing specialist clothing alterations and adaptations for people with disabilities, limited dexterity and other dressing challenges. You will build links with local groups and organisations to help promote our service, increase our visibility in the community and make sure that everyone who needs our help knows about us.

Working with the Board, the Head of Charity will strategically review the current landscape, new opportunities and funding possibilities to best support our visitors.

About the team​

The Investment Team is responsible for selecting portfolio partners, managing our charity investments and supporting our portfolio partners to improve and scale their impact.

The Investment Team also leads the Impetus Leadership Academy, a leadership development programme to support talent from ethnic minority backgrounds in the UK youth sector to progress into senior leadership roles.

The team is made up of 19 people, including former teachers, charity chief executives, charity impact leads, management consultants, social investment portfolio managers and impact consultants.

The team is led by a Portfolio Director who sits on the Senior Management Team. The Portfolio Director has 5 direct reports: a Deputy Portfolio Director, three Sector Leads (who lead our work in School engagement, School attainment and Employment Sectors) and an Impact Lead. Sector Leads line manage 6 Investment Directors. Investment Directors line manage Investment Managers (currently 6). Investment Directors and Investment Managers tend to primarily focus on a sector but might have mixed portfolios, depending on need, experience and interest.

The Investment Team has a good track record of role progression. All four Leads and a number of our Investment Directors were promoted from within the team.

Key responsibilities

Finding high potential charities and non-profit organisations to join our portfolio

• Supporting the annual cycle of identifying new investments - mapping the landscape of charities in thematic areas (e.g. Apprenticeships and Skills), conducting structured analysis of key impact and financial data and reviewing the current evidence base to identify high potential charities and inform options for Investment Directors.
• ​Contributing to due diligence of new organisations by reviewing quantitative and qualitative charity information ) and preparing clear assessments of suitability for investment; This includes considering impact and scale potential, financial stability and summarising risks and recommendations for senior review. Requires strong relationship management, in co-ordination with Investment Directors, when engaging with potential charity partners.

Supporting and managing relationships with portfolio partners 

• Working closely with Investment Directors to support portfolio partners across all areas of our work - leadership, impact and sustainability – owning defined(e.g. impact management or financial analysis).
• ​Building trust-based relationships with portfolio partners including senior leaders and  delivery staff, acting as a valued advisor on practice improvement contributing insight and support while escalating strategic issues to Investment Directors and Programme/Impact leads.

This role sits within the Trusts & Foundations team in the Relationships & Partnerships division and focuses on researching new funding opportunities of £50K+, securing new funders and managing high-value grants. You will build and manage relationships with new and existing funders, develop compelling funding applications and reports, and oversee grant management and compliance. Working closely with colleagues across the organisation and with International teams, you will play an important role in delivering ambitious income growth.

You will have a strong track record of prospect research and of securing significant trust and foundation income in the UK and/or Europe, with experience managing funding  applications from concept stage  through to stewardship. You will be an excellent communicator, confident relationship builder and highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering against ambitious income targets.

Main purpose of the role

This post is responsible for Marketing & Communications for Gilbert White’s House & Gardens. You will plan, create and deliver an annual plan, working closely with departments, management and trustees.

The aim being to promote our visitor experience, events, education and trading activities, alongside a regular spotlight on our strategy, values and impact as a charity.

The focus of this role will be to increase our income generation and expand our voice in support of the natural world. This will be achieved through an increase in visitor numbers, event bookings, educational bookings, memberships, partnerships and increase in our trading income. You will have proven experience, experience of working in a public facing organisation, and an interest in the environment, heritage and museums. When in post you will have the opportunity to be a key part of the implementation of our new strategy launched in this our 70th anniversary year.  This is initially focussed on ensuring that our image, offer and impact is relevant to the 21st century, audience development and raising awareness of  the key theme of our work - the natural world.

Key Responsibilities As a small independent museum this role offers an opportunity to take responsibility across all elements of the marketing and communication portfolio. This means that you will be hands-on in its delivery working closely with other departments to ensure a proactive and timely approach to developing, maintaining and boosting our image. In this stand-alone role you will primarily be responsible for:

• Leading the development of our annual Marketing & Communications strategy and implementation plan across all channels. Ensuring that within your role sustainability is a key theme in selecting materials, use of online resources and more generally in our external image.

• Planning  and supporting with the wider team with the marketing and communications associated with events, fundraising campaigns, membership programmes etc. to meet specific aims such as attendance, supporter growth and membership expansion.                                                                                                                                             

• Support the creation of a ‘voice’ for the charity that reflects our values and creates content in all forms that is accessible and relevant to the public. This will include working with the Collections Manager to support the development of museum displays, signage, literature and other outputs relevant to our strategy.

• Leading our communication channels with content creation, planning and execution of its delivery.  To include our website, social media, LinkedIn, digital advertising, newsletters, local magazines, leaflets, posters, brochures, signage etc  Keeping material and content up to date.

• Managing a small delegated budget in coordination with the General Manager to meet the key aims of the charity and be responsible for reporting on it.  You will liaise and engage with external agencies and suppliers, project managing their work and final output.

• Championing  our charity branding and consistent presentation of printed and online materials produced by or for us. To include supporting the team in the design and copy writing new materials and update existing materials.

• Work with the Funding & Development manager to ensure that our impact as a charity is regularly shared and our voice in the sector is heard to support our development plans.

• Responsibility for an up-to-date image and video library for use by all members of the team.  This includes an ability to take photos and videos for immediate use in our communications e.g. social media.

• Liaising with the press in the form of printed, TV,  radio and podcasts.  To coordinate visits, provision of content and arranging with the wider team what is required to ensure quality input.

• Responsibility for marketing performance analysis and reporting, using analytics to improve performance and reach to inform our wider operations and future marketing and communications strategy.

Other Responsibilities As a member of a small team you will be required to support, as necessary, the wider operations of the charity.  This includes but is not limited to;

• Hands-on working with our marketing and communications tools including, but not limited to, WordPress website, Canva, Capcut, MailChimp, Microsoft Office and knowledge of CRM databases for campaign work.                                                 

 • Monitor and record our presence in the wider media, online, with influencers and on TV and radio etc.  Working with stakeholders to protect our reputation and responding swiftly to issues.

• Manage the GDPR of marketing and communications including opt-ins, image consent, data retention etc.

• Attend as a representative of the charity our own exhibitions and events, in order to understand in depth our work, record, gain feedback and develop relationships with visitors and our supporters. 

 • Network regionally to develop relationships, promote sector collaboration and more to ensure we remain relevant and up to date in our marketing and communications.

• Act as a duty manager on rota to support the daily operations of the museum.

The Candidate This is an excellent opportunity to take the lead for Marketing and Communications in a small independent charity, which whilst based in rural East Hampshire, has a reach well beyond our boundaries due to the fame of Gilbert White.  We welcome visitors and attract attention not only nationally but also internationally. You will have:

• Proven experience of developing, planning and executing marketing and communication strategies,

• Excellent digital skills, including managing social media and website, graphic design and experience of content management systems.  Knowledge of SEO.

• Strong copywriting and storytelling skills able to plan, write and edit copy for diverse audiences.

• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to network with everyone from the public to key stakeholders and representatives of sector bodies associated with our work.

• Experience working with external suppliers such as designers, film makers and web developers.

• Experience of handling media enquiries and generating press coverage.

• Able to work independently yet collaboratively across all departments with demonstrable experience of managing a diverse workload; being able to prioritise tasks and work under pressure.

• Strong organisational and administrative skills including excellent attention to detail and effective time management.

• Experience working in the not-for-profit and/or environment/conservation/heritage sectors.

• Knowledge of data protection best practice.

Whilst a full driving licence is not essential public transport to our location is very limited and given the nature of the role to liaise with partners and represent the charity an ability to undertake travel across the area to for meetings will be an advantage.

The ‘Natural History of Selborne’ has been continuously in print since its first publication in 1789 and is reputedly the fourth most published work in the English language.  Written by Gilbert White it has contributed to the fields of ecology (the natural science of the relationships among living organisms and their environment) and phenology (the timing of biological events in relation to climate) ever since. He undertook his scientific observations in the small rural village of Selborne and this work has since inspired others to observe, enquire and record nature to understand the relationships that exist within our environment.  Charles Darwin wrote that he  ‘stood on the shoulders’ of White when he came on ‘a pilgrimage to Selborne’ as a young man in June 1857 David Attenborough wrote that Gilbert White was ‘A man in total harmony with his world.’ Introduction to Selborne, 1977 This unique historical manuscript is today housed in the home where Gilbert was born in 1720 and later lived for 66 years. The curation of this heritage home and its grounds was made possible by a generous donation from the Oates family, supporting a trust which purchased the property to establish a library and museum dedicated to natural history that opened in 1955.

The museum is now in its 70th year celebrating the lives of all three explorers of the natural world: Gilbert’s studies in Selborne in the 1700’s, Frank’s work in Africa and Central America in the mid-1800s and Lawrence’s famed contribution to the Scott expedition to the South Pole in 1912. Together they are celebrated through their original drawings, writings, specimens and artefacts housed in our galleries.  They provide an insight over three centuries to the curiosity that contributed to our understanding of nature, our environment and the climate change we are currently witnessing. Today the UK is recognised as one of the least nature connected and most nature depleted countries in the world.  Our renewed strategy is to ensure that the legacy that we curate is accessible, relevant, educational and inspirational for future generations. About the Team
Supporter Fundraising are a vital team within our fundraising department, who manage our involvement in all owned and third-party events, plan and deliver our virtual fundraising campaigns (such as Walk 5K April in 100 Miles in October) and steward and facilitate our community-led fundraising activity. Supporter experience is at the heart of everything we do, which helps us to drive engagement and retention and ultimately allows us to raise more funds to support autistic people and their families.

About the Role 
We are looking for a highly organised, proactive and supporter-focused Events Officer to support delivery across all elements of our London Marathon fundraising activity for 2027. Working under the guidance of the London Marathon Event Manager, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional supporter experience, delivering high-quality events, coordinating logistics, and ensuring our charity maximises income, engagement and brand impact throughout the full marathon campaign,  

What You’ll Do 

• Assist the London Marathon Event Manager with the planning and delivery of all campaign events
• Liaise with runners, volunteers, suppliers, third-party event partners and internal colleagues as needed
• Support the Event Manager with post-event evaluation, data analysis, and recommendations for future years

We are working with a London-based charity to recruit a Supporter Care & Data Assistant to provide vital support to their Fundraising team during a busy period.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who combines excellent supporter care with strong data and CRM skills. You will play an important role in ensuring supporters receive a positive and professional experience, while maintaining accurate and reliable fundraising data.

Role Purpose To provide accurate and timely supporter care, administrative and data support to the Fundraising team. Team: Fundraising and Supporter Engagement, Philanthropy and Partnerships team 

As the Senior Philanthropy Officer, you will join a motivated, passionate and supportive fundraising team. You will work closely with specialists across all areas of fundraising and, supported by our Philanthropy Manager, you will take the lead on managing relationships with high value funders who support the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust. 

In this role, you will lead on developing strong strategic relationships with Trusts and Foundations and high value supporters. You will create clear and engaging funding proposals, that involve multiple stakeholders and deliver face-to-face presentations when required. A key part of your work will be developing relationship building strategies and creating tailored funder experiences. 

Your contribution will help secure long-term funding and strengthen the impact of the Walk Wheel Cycle Trust.  

What You’ll Be Doing 

• Lead the stewardship of high value funders and provide clear, consistent and meaningful engagement.
• Develop and manage strategic relationships with major Trusts and Foundations to build long-term partnerships.
• Lead on securing significant grant income by creating compelling proposals at the five and six figure level.
• Carry out proactive prospect research to identify new funding opportunities and strengthen the funding pipeline.
