40 Community advocate volunteer volunteer roles in Nottingham

As part of the Government led Communities for Afghans programme, we are looking to recruit individuals or groups (UK BASED ONLY) to make up a team of 6 volunteers to support an Afghan family - you could be friends, neighbours, colleagues, faith groups, veterans, or community organisations are welcome.

We are currently focused on supporting families across Wales, West Midlands and Scotland but be keen to support elsewhere geographically where possible.  With this in mind, you may live in these areas, but we are also delighted to bring volunteers together remotely to support a family. 

You will be at the heart of this programme. It is a rewarding opportunity to make a real difference!

The Communities for Afghans programme is a community-led Government initiative supporting families as they rebuild their lives in the UK. It is a Government-approved scheme that enables local people to welcome Afghan refugee families into their community. Volunteers will be supported by us to find housing for a family, provide practical and emotional support enabling them to settle into daily life and feel a genuine sense of belonging in the community.

How community sponsorship work

1. Form a Sponsor Group: Create a team of six or more volunteers — friends, neighbours, colleagues, faith groups, veterans, or community organisations.
2. Training & Ongoing Support: Our partners provide full training, so your group feels confident and well prepared. This simple, practical training is offered before you begin and continues throughout the sponsorship journey.
3. Identify Suitable Housing: With our guidance, your group helps find long-term accommodation. We then match an Afghan family of the appropriate size and ensure the property is suitable and affordable. Government funding is available for rent deposits and related costs.
4. Welcome & Support the Family: Volunteers help the family register with schools, healthcare, benefits, and local services, while introducing them to the community and supporting them as they adjust to life in the UK.
5. Be the Local Point of Contact: You act as the family’s trusted guide, helping them navigate the area, understand local systems, and access opportunities that only residents truly know.
6. Commit for Three Years: Sponsor groups support the family for three years, providing consistency as they grow in independence, confidence, and resilience.

We’re looking for three Support Group Volunteer over the age of 18 years old, based in Scotland.

You’ll be volunteering fortnightly Thursday between 10:30am and 11:30am plus additional time for volunteer team meetings and training.

As a support group volunteer, you will help with the running of the group. The role is designed to suit the needs of the group, and the skills of people offering support. If you enjoy getting to know your community, working with others and making a real difference then this is the role for you.

We provide a platform for survivors and whistleblowers to share their lived experiences, highlight systemic frustrations and offer solutions rooted in culturally trauma-informed care.

Our membership offers young people and survivors a path to heal, learn digital skills and interactively participate in our Alchemic 369 Book Club, where members engage in weekly interactive discussions, debates and critical analysis of African, Caribbean and world history, Ifa, classics and political thought. Job Purpose:

To actively identify, locate, and surface potential real-world stories, individuals, and lived experiences that align with the organisation’s mission, ensuring a continuous pipeline of high-quality, relevant story leads for the Story Intelligence Team.

This role exists to function as the organisation’s primary “frontline discovery engine,” scanning a wide range of public sources—including media platforms, social networks, interviews, documentaries, podcasts, books, advocacy spaces, and community forums—to uncover individuals who have either publicly shared their experiences or are visibly positioned within ongoing social, cultural, or institutional narratives.

The Research Story Scout is responsible for recognising not just individual stories, but also broader story ecosystems, including repeated patterns of lived experience, underrepresented voices, emerging testimonies, and whistleblower disclosures that may not yet have been formally documented or widely circulated.

A key purpose of this role is to convert scattered public information into structured, actionable story leads that can be passed efficiently to the Outreach Team for ethical and appropriate engagement.

The role also ensures that potential stories are identified early, before they become widely saturated or lost in mainstream attention cycles, enabling the organisation to engage responsibly, respectfully, and at the right stage of the individual’s willingness to share.

Ultimately, this role ensures the organisation maintains a consistent flow of credible, relevant, and timely story opportunities by continuously scanning the public landscape and translating discovery into structured, usable intelligence for outreach and engagement.

Story Scouts spend their time locating individuals who have publicly shared their experiences or indicated a willingness to discuss their story.

Orphanages don’t protect children, they harm them. Put simply: the last thing an orphanage can provide is the first thing a child needs - someone to love them. 

Right now, 5.4 million children around the world are locked away in orphanages — even though over 80% of them are not orphans. Orphanages expose children to abuse and trafficking, and physical and psychological trauma that can last a lifetime. A century of evidence shows that the bond between a child and their family is what every child needs to grow, thrive and be safe. 

The role

As our Policy, Advocacy & EDI Trustee, you will help shape and strengthen HHC's influence on the global stage, bringing senior expertise to bear on the policy and financing decisions that determine the pace of care reform worldwide. Working closely with our Chair, CEO and senior advocacy and programmes colleagues, you will contribute to our ambitious 2030 goal by:

• Advocacy strategy — providing strategic guidance and constructive challenge to strengthen HHC's global advocacy approach, helping sharpen our positioning, messaging and campaign strategy on care reform. 
• Policy and financing influence — advising the Board and Executive on opportunities to influence the decisions of governments, regional bodies and multilateral institutions, and supporting efforts to shift public and donor financing away from orphanages and towards family-based care. 
• EDI leadership — championing equity, diversity and inclusion across Board governance, organisational culture, safeguarding, and HHC's external voice, including how we portray the children, families and communities we support. 
• Stakeholder relationships — using your personal networks and credibility to open doors with policymakers, multilateral bodies, coalition partners and international fora relevant to care reform.

Who we are looking for

You will bring senior-level experience in public policy, government relations or international advocacy, ideally connected to child protection, social welfare or human rights, and a demonstrable track record of influencing policy or financing decisions at national, regional or international level. Beyond that, we are looking for someone who brings:

• A strong, practical understanding of equity, diversity and inclusion principles and how to apply them to governance and organisational culture
• An active network among policymakers, multilateral institutions, donors or the wider international child rights community
• Experience working across cultures and in international contexts, including in lower income countries and fragile and conflict-affected states
• The ability to translate specialist expertise into clear, practical guidance the Board and Executive can act on

Time commitment

The role requires approximately 12–18 days per year, comprising:

• Four Board meetings per year (in person, London or virtual)
• Five subcommittee meetings per year (virtual), as a key member of our Programmes, Advocacy, Research and Accountability Committee (PARAC)
• An annual two-day awayday, which may take place in one of our countries of operation
• Additional time for preparation, ad hoc queries and induction in your first year

The initial term of office is three years, with the possibility of two further three-year terms by mutual agreement.

 We are seeking a proactive, confident and relationship-driven Volunteer Partnerships & Growth Manager to identify, approach and onboard potential affiliate partners, collaborators, businesses, agents, talent managers and professional networks that can help expand the reach of Influential Stars. 

 This is a telephone-led outreach and appointment-setting role, supported by email and online communication. You will make initial contact, explain how organisations can get involved, establish whether there is genuine interest and arrange introductory appointments with the appropriate Influential Stars team member. This is a relationship-led role rather than hard selling.

 Key Responsibilities 

 ⭑ Research and identify suitable affiliate partners, businesses, collaborators, agents, talent managers and professional networks ⭑ Make introductory outbound calls to potential partners ⭑ Explain the Influential Stars opportunity clearly and confidently ⭑ Establish interest and whether the opportunity is a suitable fit ⭑ Arrange qualified introductory appointments with the appropriate Influential Stars team member ⭑ Support onboarding of new collaborators and affiliates ⭑ Build and maintain positive relationships with partners and introducers ⭑ Encourage ongoing engagement and participation ⭑ Maintain regular communication to nurture long term partnerships ⭑ Coordinate with internal team members to ensure smooth onboarding ⭑ Provide clear information about roles, expectations, and opportunities ⭑ Maintain accurate records of outreach and partnerships using our CRM management system ⭑ Follow approved contact, data-protection and direct-marketing procedures ⭑ Represent the organisation professionally in all communications

Side by Side Volunteer

Many care leavers face adulthood without the support network that many young people rely on. Leaving care can be an exciting but challenging time, with some young people experiencing loneliness, isolation and uncertainty about the future.

As a Side by Side Volunteer, you will provide practical and emotional support to a care leaver, helping them build confidence, develop independence and navigate life's challenges.

Whether it's helping them access services, supporting them in achieving their goals, or simply being someone they can trust and talk to, your support can make a lasting difference.

We ask for a commitment of a few hours each month for a minimum of 12 months.

What you'll do

Depending on the role, you could:

• Build a trusted, positive relationship with a child, young person or care leaver.
• Meet regularly for activities, outings and conversations.
• Offer emotional support and encouragement.
• Support young people to build confidence and independence.
• Help young people access opportunities, services and support.
• Promote their rights, wellbeing and aspirations.
• Maintain brief records of meetings and activities. You don't need specific qualifications or previous experience.

We're looking for people who are:

• Good communicators.
• Compassionate, reliable and non-judgemental.
• Committed to supporting children and young people.
• Able to respect and value individual wishes and feelings.
• Comfortable completing basic online records and reports.
• Willing to participate in training and ongoing support.

We have a range of creative projects and tasks and our creative team have more work than people. We are particularly interested in speaking to people with video editing skills. As well as people who are interested in campaigns or being part of the activity pack team.

About DPAN
DPAN is a Community Interest Company working to close the implementation gap — helping disabled people know their rights and belong to their movement, and helping organisations turn inclusion commitments into practice. We're a small, disabled-led organisation in the early stages of building our public voice.

The role
We're looking for a volunteer to help grow and manage DPAN's social media presence, with a focus on:

• Instagram (high priority) — content planning, posting, community engagement
• TikTok (high priority, support role) — helping develop and schedule content alongside our existing production. 
• LinkedIn — professional-audience content (organisations, funders, sector peers)
• Facebook — community-facing updates

What you'll be doing

• Planning and scheduling a regular posting cadence across platforms
• Adapting DPAN content (toolkits, campaign pieces, event updates) into platform-appropriate posts
• Monitoring engagement 
• Flagging accessibility issues in our own content (alt text, captions, colour contrast) — accessibility is core to everything we publish

Time commitment: 4–5 hours/week, flexible

What this role offers

• A genuinely shaping role in a young organisation's public voice, not a "content mill" position
• Direct line to the founder (Sophie) rather than layers of sign-off

Who we're looking for

• Some hands-on experience running social accounts — personal, a side project, a previous role, or coursework — and ideally a couple of examples you can point us to (even informal ones)
• A good eye for what makes content stop the scroll, not just "we posted something"
• Comfortable working independently — we're a small team, so you'll be trusted to plan and run things without heavy oversight, but expected to actually deliver on that trust
• Understanding of (or a genuine interest in learning) accessible content practice — captions, alt text, plain language
• Lived experience of disability is welcomed but not required

• Building toward a career in social media/marketing and want real case studies for your portfolio
• A social-media-savvy student or early-career person looking for something substantial to add to your CV — not just a line item, but work you can actually show off
