We’re looking for trustees

We’re looking to recruit dynamic, committed and motivated people with professional skills and experience who are as passionate as we are about empowering individuals to work through and beyond their experience of sexual abuse.

Specific qualifications are not necessarily required and we welcome applicants with lived experience. A genuine interest in learning about our charity and our services within the local community is essential.

These trustees will help to form a new board dedicated to supporting the charity and contributing to the effective and quality governance of Trust House. You will play an active role in developing the strategic direction of the charity and provide guidance to ensure the charity continues to support anyone affected by rape or sexual abuse in the Thames Valley area.

Our shops help raise vital funds, and volunteering with us is a great way to make a difference, meet new people, and join a fantastic team. Volunteering in our shops offers a variety of exciting tasks. From sorting, steaming, and pricing donations to spotting hidden gems, you'll roll up your sleeves in the backroom and assist on the shop floor. Engaging with customers is key, whether you're serving with a smile, working the till or helping donors complete Gift Aid forms.

Creating a warm, friendly and inviting space is just as important. You'll help design eye-catching window displays, keep the space tidy, and use your creativity to ensure everything looks its best, encouraging customers to return.

No special skills are needed as we’ll show you what to do, and we provide all the training you’ll need.

The Chestnut Tree House Shop in Bognor town Centre offer a wide range of beautiful affordable outfits, including wedding dresses, suits and prom dresses.

Are you passionate about supporting people impacted by substance misuse and involved in the criminal justice system? Join our specialist service dedicated to helping individuals on probation make positive changes in their lives.

As a Dependency & Recovery Support Volunteer, you’ll work closely with our Dependency and Recovery Coordinators and partner agencies based at Walsall Probation office to deliver tailored support to adult males on probation. Your role will include:

• Assisting with drug and alcohol interventions
• Encouraging motivation and goal-setting
• Supporting individuals to reduce substance misuse and offending behaviour

• Empathy and understanding of the issues faced by those in recovery and the criminal justice system

As a Practical Support at Home Volunteer, you’ll make a meaningful difference by helping families manage the household tasks that can feel overwhelming during such emotional and exhausting times. 

Your time and care will help bring calm, dignity and relief to families going through the toughest moments of their lives. 

What You Need to Know 

• Age: 18+ 

• Location: Across South & West Wales (in your local area) 

• Commitment: Flexible and can be adjusted to accommodate your personal schedule. The support plans designed for referred families are typically structured to span a period of six weeks 

• Checks: Enhanced DBS check, 2 references and induction/training course required before starting. 

What You’ll be Doing 

• Light household cleaning (dusting, wiping surfaces, hoovering) 

• Tidying, decluttering and organising 

• Laundry support (washing, drying, folding) 

• Basic garden maintenance (if interested/experienced) 

• Running small errands locally 

• Supporting with simple household tasks that reduce the family’s mental load.

Training You Will Receive

Role‑specific and organisation‑wide training will also be provided as needed. 

All volunteers are required to keep their mandatory training up to date to 

continue in their role.

About Medact

Medact organises the health community to work towards a world in which everyone is able to live healthy, dignified lives, supported by political and economic systems that centre health justice. Our priority work areas are some of the most pressing threats to health and wellbeing, including ending state violence, housing & energy justice, and migrant access to healthcare. Medact seeks systemic solutions to major social problems, and is unafraid to hold decision-makers to account. We launched our new five-year strategy at the end of 2025, embedding our vision for how we win and how we grow.

We’re member-led, and our membership spans a range of people who work in health, including nurses, doctors, midwives and clinical researchers, as well as people from the wider health community.

About the role

As a Trustee, you will provide guidance, governance and final sign-off on major decisions on behalf of our membership. As Board members, our Trustees are collectively responsible for the governance of the organisation in line with the requirements of the Charity Commission. Trustees also contribute to the development of Medact's strategy and participate in a range of other activities to support the Director and staff with our work.

As Treasurer, you will monitor the financial administration of the charity and report to the Board of Trustees on its state of financial health to provide the board with the confidence and knowledge to better make strategic decisions. The Treasurer will ideally be available to work with the Executive Director and fellow Trustees between Board meetings to deal with issues which may arise. Key responsibilities include:

• Liaise with ED and Trustees to ensure the financial viability of the organisation’s strategy

• Advise on the financial implications of Medact’s strategic plan

• Present Medact’s financial position and broader context at Board meetings

• Support the Head of Finance with the production of an annual budget

• Ensure that the Board is aware of its financial duties and responsibilities and the need to comply with all legislation

• Take a lead in interpreting financial data to fellow Board members

• Provide oversight and guidance where necessary of accounts prepared for funders and  relevant statutory bodies

• Oversee the appointment of auditors and review on a regular basis

• Act as countersignatory on charity cheques and some applications to funders, approve payments on banking systems, and spending approval in accordance with financial management processes

• Ensure that all financial policies, procedures and the appointment of external financial advisors are reviewed on a regular basis

Acting as a Trustee is a voluntary role but reasonable travel expenses can be paid. 

Who we are looking for

Essential:

• Good background in financial management and analysis, gained through paid or unpaid experience

• Able to communicate financial information clearly and to people with different levels of financial and data literacy 

• Knowledge and experience of finance practice relevant to voluntary and community organisations

• Knowledge of accounting processes, tools and procedures

• High proficiency in Excel/Google Sheets, Powerpoint/Google Slides for analysis and presentation

• Commitment to Medact’s vision, purpose and culture and its way of working

• Understands and accepts the legal duties, liabilities and responsibilities of Trustees, and the difference between governance functions and management functions 

• High level of integrity and sound judgement

• Able and willing to devote the necessary time to the role

Desirable:

• Lived experience of being part of one of the communities Medact’s work seeks to support

• Awareness and understanding of the campaigning world and the health community’s role in it

Timeline

Applications for the position of Treasurer are open until 9am on Monday 9th March.

We aim to co-opt the successful applicant to the Board at the next Board meeting in April 2026.

We are currently looking for Welcome and Reception Volunteers to join our supportive team in Brent. Shifts are available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays or Fridays (10am - 4pm) with a minimum commitment of one day a week. Same time each week for a minimum of six months. 

Shortlisting will take place W/C 30th March and interviews will take place Tuesday 14th April. 

How will I be ending homelessness?

As a Welcome and Reception Volunteer you will be the first point of contact for many people who need to access our services. This contact may set the tone for our relationship with that individual and whether they choose to get the help we can offer, so the warm, non-judgemental, and informative welcome you create could set them on the journey to ending their homelessness.

What will I be doing?

Tasks you will support the team with include:

• Welcome
  • Welcoming visitors to the Skylight and ensuring they sign in and out
  • Signposting to reception and information areas
  • Directing members to activities within the Skylight and encouraging engagement
  • Chat to members while they are waiting and offer and provide refreshments
  • Ensuring information stands are well stocked and up to date
  • Supporting with filling in of basic forms
  • Carrying out building tours where required and/or showing members to their classes/appointments
• Reception
  • Responding to and making telephone calls
  • Checking members in and out on our MAPS (members records) database
  • Notifying Lead Workers that members have arrived for their appointments
  • Supporting with any front of house administration tasks including supporting Engagement and Assessment Officers with tasks such as sending out travel passes and conducting research when required

 To be successful in this role we are looking for someone who:

• Is an excellent communicator, confident in building relationships and creating welcoming, compassionate environments, and able to recognise conflict and remain calm in challenging situations. 
• You should be confident interacting with individuals from a diverse range of backgrounds, including those with English as a second language
• Has a good level of English 
• Is non-judgemental, patient, and reliable
• Has good IT and telephone skills with the ability to use internet, email, excel and databases
• Has good organisational skills
• Understands the importance of keeping an individual’s personal information secure and private and working within the boundaries of the role to keep everyone safe 
• Is passionate about standing with Crisis and our members to end homelessness
