British Exploring Society is looking for two additional Trustees to join our Council (Board).

Trustee: Operations and Expeditions – A trustee with previous experience of leading British Exploring Society expeditions. Experience of taking young people on multiple remote and challenging expeditions. Previous Trustee experience of an outdoor and/or youth development charity is essential.

Trustee: Legal – A trustee who is a qualified lawyer ideally operating at a Partner level or senior executive level with a corporate environment with a passion for the outdoors and youth work. Previous trustee experience is helpful but not essential.

Our trustees

Our trustees play a vital role at British Exploring Society. They have independent control over, and legal responsibility for, our management and administration. Since 1932 we have always relied on the time individuals donate to us, and our trustees are a cornerstone of that culture of professional volunteering. We want our trustees to enjoy the time they give to us, and to feel motivated and uplifted by the work we do. We do everything we can to involve our trustees in the life of the organisation, to visit and get involved in our activities and to feel the positive impact of their contributions.

Our trustees ensure that we comply with the law, with our Articles, and that we continuously strive to fulfil our charitable purpose. This includes a proactive duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of our beneficiaries and a duty of care to ensure beneficiaries and others the charity comes into contact with do not come to harm.

Key responsibilities

Planning

• Approve our mission statement and review the team’s performance in achieving it
• Annually assess the changing environment and approve the charity’s plans
• Annually review and approve the organisation’s strategy
• Review and approve our financial goals
• Annually review and approve our budget
• Approve and review major policies, including all those relating to financial procedures, health and safety, risk, data protection and safeguarding.

Organisation

• Recruit, appraise, advise, support and if necessary change the CEO of the charity
• Be assured of management succession
• Approve appropriate salaries, terms and conditions of service for staff
• Support sub-committees and fill vacancies as needed
• Regularly audit the performance of Council and approve plans to improve its performance.

Operations

• Review results achieved by our team in relation to aims and objectives, annual and long range goals
• Be certain that the financial structure of the charity is adequate for its current needs and strategy
• Provide open and constructive criticism, advice, comments and support
• Approve major actions of the charity, such as expenditure on items over authorised limits and major shift in activity.

Audit

• Ensure accountability within the charity, particularly where trustees delegate responsibility for particular tasks or decisions to staff or volunteers
• Be assured that Council is adequately and currently informed of the condition of the charity and its operations
• Be assured that published reports adequately reflect the nature of services and the financial condition of the charity
• Ascertain that the CEO has established appropriate policies to define and identify conflicts of interest throughout the organisation and is administering and enforcing those policies
• Appoint independent auditors
• Review and assure compliance with statutory accounting, reporting requirements, relevant laws and standards affecting the charity

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising team leaders have the exciting and varied role of inspiring our fundraising volunteers to plan and deliver local fundraising events. Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.

Our fundraising team leaders usually spend three to four hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Cherry Trees is a charity. located in East Clandon (near Guildford, Surrey), providing home-from-home short breaks for children aged 0–19 with a range of complex disabilities, including learning, physical, and sensory impairments.

We are rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted and care for more than 100 children and young people in a safe, stimulating, and fun environment. At Cherry Trees, we see the child first and the disability second, valuing every child for who they are. It’s an exciting time to join Cherry Trees. We have recently recruited a new Head of Fundraising and Communications who will be building the team as we invest in a programme of service growth in conjunction with a new 5-year strategy which will be publicised in 2026.

What difference will you make?

Cherry Trees offers a lifeline to vulnerable children and their families. As a Trustee, you will play a key role in helping us to grow and develop and to enable us to continue to provide support and a critical lifeline to even more vulnerable children and their families in great need. Alongside a team of 8 trustees you will play a key role in ensuring we have the maximum impact we can for our community.

Role Description

The treasurer is an officer of the trustee board and not a paid worker. The role of the treasurer is to ensure that all the finances and the supporting financial control systems are kept in order.

Key objectives of the role:

• To provide strategic advice to the Trustees on financial matters as regards the operation and development of Cherry Trees within the direction set by the Chairman of the Trustees.
• To oversee the financial affairs of the Charity and ensure that they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice.
• To ensure that proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures are in place.
• To monitor and report on the financial health of the Charity.
• To oversee the production of necessary financial reports, returns, accounts and audits.
• The role requires active participation in board meetings and collaboration with fellow trustees and the executive team to support Cherry Trees’ mission.
• The will be a minimum of 8 board and committee meetings to attend

Principal Tasks

The responsibilities of the treasurer are essential for maintaining the financial stability and integrity of the charity, ensuring that it can continue to fulfil its mission and objectives. Specifically, these include:

Financial oversight

• Ensure that all financial records are accurate, up to date and compliant with legal and accounting standards.
• Ensure that effective financial procedures and controls are in place.
• Appraise the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies.
• Chair the Management and Finance Committee (M&F) quarterly, monitor performance against budgets and ensure that Capital Expenditure is properly controlled in line with the latest Capex Policy approved by the Trustees.
• Attend half-yearly meetings of the Investment Committee at which the Charity’s investment brokers report on their management of the Cherry Trees investments and measure performance against their benchmark.
• Liaise with the investment brokers as necessary to ensure that adequate liquidity (cash flow) is available and that Cherry Trees is able to meet its liabilities.
• Assist the trustees and management in ensuring that the financial reserves of Cherry Trees are maintained at an appropriate level.

Budget Management

• Oversee the production of the annual budget and propose its adoption by the board.

Financial reporting

• Work closely as necessary with the CEO and COO to appoint appropriate external auditors and to ensure that any audit recommendations are implemented in a timely manner.
• Oversee the production of necessary financial reports and accounts and present them, along with any audit recommendations, to the board.

Strategic advisory

• Provide strategic advice to the board on financial matters and help shape the charity's financial strategy.
• Work closely with the CEO and COO to ensure that a long-term financial strategy is in place, which can guide the organisation in achieving its objectives.

Board liaison

• Regularly report the financial position and ongoing financial viability of the charity at board meetings.
• Make fellow trustees aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting financial data.
• Assist the trustees in ensuring that appropriate steps are taken to manage financial risks that could impact significantly upon Cherry Trees.

Personal skills and qualities

• Knowledge of bookkeeping and financial management.
• Good financial analysis skills with the ability to think about the future as well as the present.
• Strong working knowledge of Excel.
• Be methodical, organised and consistent.
• Ability to communicate clearly.
• Have a strong commitment to the organisation.
• Some experience or knowledge of charity finance, fundraising and pension schemes would be an advantage.

Qualifications

• Strong skills and experience in Financial Statements and Accounting
• Proficiency in Financial Planning, Budgeting, and Finance
• An understanding of charitable organisations and nonprofit financial management is a plus
• Good communication and teamwork abilities
• A commitment to the vision and values of the Cherry Trees Charity
• Professional qualifications in accounting or finance are desirable

People in care homes should have a voice to communicate their needs wishes and wants. Some people need support with this, but don’t have friends and family available to assist them.  This means they’re entitled to have support from an RPR and volunteer, who are there to make sure they get the care they deserve.  Your role as an RPR Support Volunteer is to collaborate with the VoiceAbility RPR to make sure a person’s views are listened to when decisions are made about their care.

As an RPR Support Volunteer you might:

• Visit people in their care home, to make sure they’re getting the right care and support
• Talk with them about their feelings, thoughts and wishes
• Raise concerns
• Keep detailed notes and records
• Make a real difference to someone’s life

Hospital Visitor Volunteer – Mondays and Wednesdays 9 am- 4 pm  

Hospital Visitor volunteers visit hospital settings to ensure that people detained under the Mental Health Act are aware that they have a legal right to an IMHA qualified advocate.  The volunteers are instrumental in ensuring that clients get access to an advocate and can also support the work that advocates undertake. 

As a hospital volunteer, you might:

• hold drop-in sessions
• attend events and ward meetings at local facilities
• share information
• assist people to request advocacy support by completing a form online or calling our contact centre

Support Session Volunteer 

You’ll be supporting people over the age of 18 with disabilities, this may include those with poor mental health, learning difficulties, autism and other disabilities.  Your role will include supporting clients to understand and undertake a task on a one-to-one basis.  The task will vary from client to client as will the needs of the individual.

As a support session volunteer, you might:

• help people have their say when it matters most
• Helping individuals navigate challenges and ensuring their needs are met
• help people to make complaints and use local services

All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

Greatwood & Horseclose Communty Centre sits in a well established friendly community, made up of home owners, private rental and six various Housing Associations.

The Friends of Greatwood and Horseclose are looking for a new Volunteer Secretary to play a vital role in making sure that the community centre achieves its core purpose of benefitting the local community of Greatwood and Horseclose.

This role is for someone who is organised and methodical, with an eye for detail. They will plan, organise and take minutes at our meetings as well as playing an important part to develop our strategic goals.

Tasks and activities will include -

· Planning, arranging and producing meeting agendas for our trustee meetings, any sub-committees and our AGM with the Chair, in line with legal, and other regulatory requirements, and in accordance with our governing document

· Assist with any official correspondence

· Supporting our trustees in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities

· Organising trustee induction and ongoing training

· Support the Chair to ensure we comply with the relevant charity regulations, including all our reporting responsibilities

Hospital Visitor Volunteer

Hospital Visitor volunteers visit hospital settings to ensure that people detained under the Mental Health Act are aware that they have a legal right to an IMHA qualified advocate.The volunteers are instrumental in ensuring that clients get access to an advocate and can also support the work that advocates undertake.

As a hospital volunteer, you might: 

• hold drop-in sessions

• attend events and ward meetings at local facilities 

• share information

• assist people to request advocacy support by completing a form online or calling our contact centre 

All volunteering will take place Monday to Friday between 09:00 and 17:00.  You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that there is no opportunity to volunteer at weekends or in the evening.

VoiceAbility are committed to safeguarding all clients who access our services. All Volunteers will be required to undertake a DBS check at the appropriate level and provide contact details for a minimum of two referees in line with our safer recruitment practice.

The difference you will make to cats and people

As a charity we are able to help thousands of cats each year thanks to the generous donations we receive from members of the public. Our fundraising team leaders have the exciting and varied role of inspiring our fundraising volunteers to plan and deliver local fundraising events. Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.

You can expect us to

• make you feel welcome, included and respected in line with our values and behaviours
• support you in having a positive and impactful experience at Cats Protection
• cover agreed out-of-pocket expenses in line with our Expenses Policy
• provide you with access to learning, development and engagement opportunities

What we need from you

You'll be:

• supporting and encouraging a team of fundraising volunteers
• planning fundraising events and activities with your team
• allocating tasks before and during fundraising events
• keeping financial records from fundraising events
• encouraging and promoting a professional image of Cats Protection
• following policies and guidelines and ensuring licences and permits are obtained for events

Time expectation

Our fundraising team leaders usually spend three to four hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.

Relevant Person’s Representative (RPR) Support Volunteer

People in care homes should have a voice to communicate their needs wishes and wants. Some people need support with this, but don’t have friends and family available to assist them.  This means they’re entitled to have support from an RPR and volunteer, who are there to make sure they get the care they deserve.  Your role as an RPR Support Volunteer is to collaborate with the VoiceAbility RPR to make sure a person’s views are listened to when decisions are made about their care. 

As an RPR Support Volunteer you might: 

• Visit people in their care home, to make sure they’re getting the right care and support 

• Talk with them about their feelings, thoughts and wishes 

• Raise concerns

Please note that if you wish to volunteer in a hospital setting you would be required to travel to Elmleigh Hospital on a weekly basis.

Our Gardener Volunteers support our homes by helping to maintain their outdoor spaces through weeding, pruning and planting, so that the people we support can enjoy spending time in a beautiful environment. 

We are currently looking for volunteer gardeners for one of our services, who can support with the following tasks:

• Create planters

• Provide general maintenance of our gardens

• Watering, planting, weeding and pruning

• Maintaining flower beds

• Creating/improving/maintaining our sensory garden spaces

Skills required 

In order to become one of our gardener volunteers you will be:

• Knowledgeable about plants

• Confident using gardening equipment

• Punctual and reliable

• Friendly and approachable.

Training required for this role (all delivered vis e-learning)

• Safeguarding

• H&S

• Manual Handling

• How to be Eye Care Aware

• Fire Safety

• Infection Control

• Data Security and Confidentiality

• First Aid

All these courses will take approximately 40-60 minutes, apart from the First Aid which is 2 hours.

Georgia’s Voice is a suicide prevention charity providing vital mental health support to young women aged 18–25 across Cornwall. Founded in 2020 following the tragic death of 19-year-old Georgia, the charity exists to ensure that no young woman feels unheard, unsupported or alone at her most vulnerable moment.

Georgia’s Voice offers safe, compassionate and non-judgemental support through weekly groups, a welcoming drop-in hub, counselling, workshops and community-based activity. Our work is grounded in lived experience, empathy and trust, and for many young women our services are a lifeline

As the charity enters an exciting new phase, with an ambitious five-year strategy focused on strengthening impact, sustainability and reach, we are seeking to appoint a new Chair and several Trustees to help shape our future and strengthen our governance at this critical time

Chair of Trustees

Purpose of the role
The Chair will provide leadership to the Board, ensuring effective governance, strong decision-making and a constructive, supportive relationship with the Founder and senior team.

We are seeking someone who brings:

• Board-level experience, ideally within a charity or purpose-driven organisation
• Strong leadership, facilitation and interpersonal skills
• Confidence handling risk, complexity and sensitive issues
• A values-driven approach aligned with Georgia’s Voice’s mission

The Chair role is suited to someone able to take an active, hands-on governance role.

Trustees

We are particularly interested in Trustees with experience in one or more of the following areas:

• Finance or accounting
• Fundraising and income generation
• Marketing, communications or PR
• Legal, regulatory or government
• Digital and technology

We also warmly welcome applicants with lived experience relevant to our work, who can help ensure the voices of young women remain central to our governance.

Commitment and Practicalities

• Trustees are appointed for a three-year term, renewable up to three terms
• Time commitment is approximately one day per month (Chair slightly more)
• The Board meets four times per year, in person or online
• An annual in-person Strategy Day is also held
• Reasonable expenses are reimbursed
