Candidates will share our passionate commitment to the power of civil society, and our vision for extending and deepening our reach within the sector. A skilled governance practitioner, able to work effectively with an engaged and expert board and a high-performing executive team, you’ll have a nuanced understanding of our business model and of how we can build on the progress of recent years. You must be eligible for membership of ACEVO, and experience of leading within our sector is essential.

With a significant amount of external change likely to take place in the early stages of the next chair’s tenure, we will look for a track record of working with agility and strategic creativity. You’ll need to balance your professional expertise with personal humility and curiosity, and current, practical knowledge of our sector across England and Wales would be a significant asset. About the opportunity  

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the Smart Works Greater Manchester Board of Trustees.

The Corporate Relationships Trustee will support in developing the corporate supporter base across the city region, with the aim of increasing the funding received from organisations. This will involve supporting the Fundraising and Partnerships Manager to shape the our corporate partner “offer”, engaging with corporate supporters, and building the narrative of our social value proposition.

Securing corporate funding / financial donations as an income stream will enable the Charity to continue delivering the Smart Works service across Greater Manchester, helping women to secure employment and gain financial independence. The corporate partner offering will include securing formal, multi-year Charity Partner status for Smart Works Greater Manchester across the city region and increasing corporate participation in fundraising challenges, such as the annual Cycle for Smart Works challenge and payroll giving.

The time commitment for this voluntary, unpaid role is an average of 0.5 day per month, with more time given at busy periods of the year. There will be a requirement to sit on the Fund-Raising Sub-Committee, with meetings taking place every three months, and to attend Board meetings taking place every quarter.

General Duties of a Smart Works Trustee 

• Work with the Chair of the Board of Trustees to ensure the centre is well-run and governed effectively.

• Build strong working relationships with the Chair, fellow trustees, staff, volunteers and supporters. 
• Work in a small team and tailor strong interpersonal and communication skills to all levels of seniority.

Personal Specification 

It is our vision that the successful applicant will have a strong network of corporate contacts across Manchester city and the wider city region and be able to leverage their skills to create, develop, and secure corporate partnerships and deliver the desired financial outcomes.

The Corporate Relationship Trustee will be expected to support the Fundraising and Partnerships Manager, and, where necessary, to liaise with the Smart Works Charity Corporate Partnerships team in London to ensure joined-up activities where contacts are national organisations.

As this is a voluntary, unpaid opportunity, it requires a self-starting and proactive approach with the capacity and time to challenge, engage and contribute to the work of the Board in a positive manner.

About The Way Youth Zone

The Way Youth Zone is a youth-led, open access, universal state of the art space for young people aged 8-19 (up to 25 with a disability) located centrally in the vibrant and diverse city of Wolverhampton.

We are looking for a new Chair to lead and support us in this exciting next phase of the Way’s development. 

What will you be doing?

The role of Chair is a stimulating and challenging role that will call on your strategic and interpersonal skills.

It provides an opportunity to work alongside an experienced and diverse team of Trustees and senior management in a rapidly changing environment to make a real difference to the young people of Wolverhampton.

The Chair provides leadership and direction to the Board of Trustees to enable the Board to fulfil its responsibilities for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, as well as oversight and scrutiny of the charity’s operations.

The role is not remunerated. However, reasonable expenses incurred in carrying out the role will be repaid.

Time Commitment

· The Board meet 6 times a year for 2 hours in the evening (5pm -7pm).

· One to one meetings with the CEO every month, ideally twice a month. These can be done remotely.

· Ad hoc communication outside of formal meetings.

· Annual Board Development Day.

· Ideally the Chair will support on at least one sub-committee (3/4 meetings a year)

· Ideally you will be able to represent The Way Youth Zone within the community including at events once or twice a year.

· The Chair is encouraged to get to know our young people by joining them on a session.

We are looking for individuals with professional or lived experience of working with children. Our volunteer playworkers are passionate about play and providing a welcoming and safe space for all children.

About the Role

As a volunteer play worker, you will work in partnership with the Specialist Family Support Worker in the planning and delivery of play sessions. Most children will be between the ages of 2-5 years.

Play sessions will be child-centered and age-appropriate, and will include arts and crafts, sensory play and free play with toys/resources in the refuge. Working with the Specialist Family Support Worker, you will be able to respond to the individual needs of the children and adapt sessions as needed. You will record your observations on each child at the end of the session and reflect on how the sessions went with Specialist Family Support Worker.

You will be supported by the Specialist Family Support Worker in monthly supervisions. This is a space to discuss your volunteering role, what is going well for you and areas of support you need.

We are looking for volunteers to support one session per week, either:

• Wednesday 10am – 1pm (Islington)
• Friday 12pm – 3pm (Enfield)  

You will be expected to participate in setting up and in the evaluation of the session. You may also be asked your availability to attend additional sessions and trips to be held over school half terms.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking volunteers who have:

• Professional and/or lived experience of working with children
• Understanding of the impact of domestic abuse on children and young people
• A strengths-focused approach to working with challenging behaviour
• Knowledge of Safeguarding Children and Child Protection Procedures, or who are willing to learn
• Commitment to attend Safeguarding, Health and Safety, and Equality and Diversity training with Solace Women’s Aid
• Ability to communicate effectively with children aged 0-5, parents and staff
• Basic knowledge of child development
• Organisation and time management skills

Although not essential, we would welcome applications from volunteers who have a formal qualification in working with children, young people and families, or who have knowledge of trauma-informed approaches to working with children and young people.

THE DETAILS

Feeling Strong is an exciting Dundee-based charity with the ambition to improve the lives of young people living with mental health and wellbeing challenges by fostering the skills, confidence and aspirations they need to flourish. Our services are designed by young people, delivered by young people for the benefit of young people, and we believe that this youth-led/peer-led approach is our biggest asset in tackling issues around mental health and wellbeing. We support stable recovery journeys for young people, lead campaigns to tackle societal issues, develop quality resources based on our own research, and tackle the disparity they face in unemployment, underemployment and accessing opportunities like further and higher education.

YOUR COMMITMENT

Whilst the Trustee Board meets for formal meetings 6 times a year, successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the organisation more widely, taking part in fundraisers, external events, strategic planning and advising the staff team when needed. The average contribution expected of Trustees is around one hour a week.

Work-related travel costs will be reimbursed.

Home-Start Portsmouth is looking for a new Chairperson to lead our Board of Trustees and contribute to the development and success of the charity.

Home-Start Portsmouth supports families with young children through their most challenging times. Our vision is a world where no parent feels alone in the critical task of raising children.

The charity is part of the Home-Start UK federation of more than 80 Home-Starts.

Through our expert staff team and local community of more than 100 trained volunteers, we offer practical and emotional support to parents and families by spending time in their homes, running parenting programmes and offering stay and play groups, and school-readiness programmes in the community.

In 2022-23, we supported 1,394 families through projects and community groups, and 788 children. Our volunteers delivered almost 17,000 hours of support to families.

It's an exciting time to join the charity as, this year, we are on target to triple income, have doubled the staff team and are offering services to many more families in the city.

We are looking for a strong and passionate Chair to lead and enable the Board of Trustees at Home-Start Portsmouth (made up of eight Trustees and CEO).

The opportunity

You will be joining Sustainability First at a critical time, when we are stepping up our ambition to drive change in the energy and water sectors in a way that benefits people and responds to the urgent need to transition to a more sustainable future. You will work collaboratively with our Executive Director in meeting our ambitions to scale our work, drive change across the sector and embed the representation of people into decision-making.

This will include six primary responsibilities:

1 Ensure that Sustainability First has a clear strategic direction aimed at fulfilling its charity objectives and that the Strategy is regularly reviewed.

2 Oversee the governance of the Charity with:

     a. an effective, diverse and relevant Board of Trustees.

     b. appropriate policies, processes & financial management such that the Charity operates within the law, in pursuit of its Strategy and demonstrating good practice.

     c. regular and effective liaison, reporting and oversight of the Executive Director, Company Secretary and, as necessary, staff and panel of experts in order to ensure effective and proportionate planning, use of resources, monitoring and reporting by the Board of Trustees.

3 Set the agenda for and chair Board meetings to ensure engagement of, and discussion amongst Trustees based on the best possible information, input from the Executive Director and team, leading to clear and accountable decision-making.

4 Appoint, support and manage the Executive Director on behalf of the Board.

5 Ensure that the charity has an income generation strategy which is monitored and actively supported by trustees and Chair, in order to achieve the Board’s stated objective to build resilience and capacity for Sustainability First to successfully fulfil its charitable objects.

6 Represent the charity externally as required.

Skills

After many years of service to our charity, our current Chair is retiring. At a time of opportunity and challenge for our organisation, we’re looking for someone with a proven track record of leadership at board level, ideally in the UK charity sector. Your experience of running and growing a small but impactful organisation in a professional or voluntary capacity will be crucial to the work of our Board, dedicated staff and expert associates.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, you will draw on your experience of collegiate collaboration, positive decision-making and effective problem-solving to help ensure funding, organisational excellence, and ultimately environmental and social change.

PERSON SPECIFICATION FOR CHAIR

The ideal candidate will have proven knowledge/ skills/ experience in the following areas:

We are looking for a Chair to steer our Board of Trustees, providing strategic oversight and governance. The Chair will be actively leading on shaping the future of our Hall, developing the business and setting its strategic direction to ensure financial viability for the future.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a wide variety of skills who can be an enabler to grow the business and build on the progress we have made to date. Ideally you will have experience in leadership, management and organisational development. Experience in the voluntary sector, community facilities or running community projects would be helpful.

We also organise and run events for the local community such as seasonal fairs, family entertainment events, seniors' activities, childrens' craft and activity sessions and discos. Our village hall is at the centre of the Emersons Green community. As a large village hall, we are looking to the future to ensure that we can be financially viable in these challenging times.

The Board of Trustees is the governing body of our charity. It is where final decisions are made. The Board’s key role is to make sure that the charity is successful in working towards its aims and objectives. The Board oversees the management of the hall and its staff and is responsible for the larger decisions, keeping an eye on the budgets and generally helping to ensure the halls continued success. This may include approving improvements to the hall, enacting policies, supporting the Hall Manager and the staff in dealing with hirers and staging community events and activities, and planning and monitoring progress.

The day to day running of the hall is dealt with by the Hall Manager, with the support of staff, the Treasurer and Company Secretary.

We have 6 scheduled meetings a year and then usually a few ad hoc ones to look at budgets and staff meetings. These are usually in the evenings. The regular meetings tend to last about 2.5 hours.

Responsibilities

Trustees are responsible for governance, strategic oversight and ambassadorship on behalf of Hatch, a charitable organisation. Trustees take overall stewardship and responsibility for the well-being of Hatch, providing strategic direction and ensuring that Hatch operates effectively to deliver its vision and mission. 

Trustees act to uphold the core ethos and values of the organisation, fulfilling a duty of care in accordance with its governing documents, charity law and regulatory requirements.

Key Trustee Duties

• Contributing actively in providing strategic direction to Hatch; agreeing overall policy, setting targets, and evaluating performance against agreed targets and in line with Hatch mission and values

• Ensuring that Hatch complies with its Articles of Association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations

• Ensuring Hatch applies its resources responsibly and exclusively in pursuance of its mission and its objects as defined in its Articles of Association

• Safeguarding the assets, staff and beneficiaries of the charity by ensuring risks are managed and mitigated, as appropriate

• Ensuring the financial stability of Hatch including ensuring appropriate controls and procedures are implemented and followed

• Ensuring that Hatch is accountable to its founders, funders and other stakeholders and that the Hatch team and volunteers are responsible to the Board

• Safeguarding and promoting the reputation and values of Hatch, including acting as an Ambassador for Hatch

• Acting in the best interest of the charity, its beneficiaries and future beneficiaries at all times, in accordance with its public benefit, 

• Applying skills and experience to question and challenge in good faith, contribute to Board discussions and to taking balanced and informed Board decisions

• Appointing and monitoring the performance of the CEO 

• Conduct an annual appraisal and remuneration review for the Chief Executive in consultation with other Trustees

• Being collectively responsible for the actions of the organisation and other trustees

• Declaring any conflict between personal or professional interests and those of the charity

In addition you may be asked to

• Participate in activities with the Hatch team and Trustees to help you get to know the organisation. 

• Expand the network, resources, and funds available to Hatch by making introductions and connecting the charity to relevant contacts in your network

• Meet with Hatch’s prospective and current donors/ funders, where appropriate, as part of our donor experience and stewardship strategy

• Act as a signatory to Hatch documentation, fundraising proposals and/or the regulatory statements for the Charity Commission and Companies House

• Keep informed about Hatch’s activities and wider issues that affect our work

• Participate in other tasks as arise from time to time, such as recruiting Hatch team members and representing Hatch at functions and meetings as appropriate

• Participate in or lead on a particular project, if relevant to their interests, experience and professional network.

Time Commitment

• Four formal Board meetings per year held in Central/South, London (or online) (2 hours per meeting), plus time to review the Board pack sent one week in advance of each Board meeting 

• Up to four additional meetings per year of trustees and staff members to develop strategy, ideas etc

• Additional Training and Development sessions are offered to all trustees around effective trusteeship, impact measurement, finance management and more (via external providers)

• Ad hoc engagement and support to the CEO, other staff and board members 

• Engagement with Hatch staff, programmes and founders as relevant

• Attendance at Hatch’s fundraising events and ad hoc fundraising meetings as relevant

• Hatch Trustees are appointed to serve for a term of 3 years and are be able to stand for re-election for a further 2 terms (maximum service 9 years)

• Prospective trustees start as Board Observers with Hatch, enabling you and the team to assess if we’re a good fit. Being a Board Observer comes with most of the same responsibilities and commitments as a full trusteeship does. We would expect prospective trustees to be Board Observers with Hatch for 3 - 6 months (1 - 2 board meetings and engagement opportunities) before being asked to become a full trustee where this is mutually desirable

As Hatch grows we want to continue to build our brand and ensure opportunities to share our work, mission and impact with the world are delivered to the best of our abilities. We are looking for someone with specific skills, experience and network to support Hatch’s brand building and influencing, particularly with Public Relations background.

• Fundraising: Hatch is actively looking to diversify its income , which currently mainly comes from corporate partners (around 70-80%). We believe there is a big opportunity to work with more trusts & foundations and individual philanthropists on a strategic level as well as work with local or central government. We’d welcome people who have an understanding of the world of Philanthropy, Trusts & Foundations and might even be involved in running one or working in one.

About the Role

We are looking for a Volunteer to assist in the running of the daily programme of activities at Headway East London. The Day Service is a new opportunity for people living with brain injury in the East London area to join our community. 

Volunteering with us, you’ll get involved in the fun and creative activities going on at our Day Service. Every week is different: you could help in our art studio, assist in the kitchen or take part in a music session. You’ll be supporting our members one-to-one and in groups. You don’t need any special skills or knowledge, we’ll give you the induction you need, and support is always on hand, with regular volunteer meetings, training sessions and supervision.

Main Duties

• To help Headway staff manage the activity programme for each member by offering one-to-one support or in small groups.
• To assist members with specific activities that prove challenging for them i.e., using computers, cooking, engaging in art activities.
• To initiate discussion, games or activities and encourage members to take part.
• To help floor staff around lunch time (food preps. setting up tables, dishing out and serving food).
• To assist with keeping the Headway centre safe, clean, and tidy all times by taking on tasks such as collecting and washing cups, tidying up resources' shelves, wiping tables before lunch etc…
• To inform floor staff about activities undertaken with members and any significant changes in mood or behaviour. To take members to social events and outings and being able to assist individuals needing to use a wheelchair.
• To undergo training as required and attend volunteer debriefs and supervision. To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required.

Person Specification

• Aged 18 or over.
• Experience working with people clear and sensitive communication.
• Ability to relate well to people on a one-to-one basis and be sympathetic to others’ situations.
• Willing to participate in a variety of activities appropriate for our members.
• Prepared to lead an activity with a small group of members.

Commitment

The role requires a minimum commitment of at least 4 months,anyday from Monday to Friday between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Volunteers need to sign a volunteer agreement and confidentiality form.

Training/Support

Each volunteer is given an induction which includes information on health & safety, fire precautions, confidentiality, equal opportunities, and a brief outline of the long-term effects of head injury.

As part of this role, you will receive ongoing support and you will have the opportunity to gain experience in Health and Social Care.

• To fully support our volunteers in their role we provide: regular volunteer meetings.
• Training sessions delivered by our specialist staff a regular debrief session.
• One to one supervision starting after the first 4 months and yearly appraisal meetings.
