About the Role

This is a rare opportunity to take a senior leadership role at North London Open Spaces and directly contribute to and make a meaningful impact in the conservation and protection of these cherished green spaces.

As a member of the senior management team, the successful candidate will serve as the primary subject matter expert at NLOS for nature conservation, conceiving and leading on initiatives, advising colleagues, and working collaboratively both internally and externally.  They will have responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day management of most of Hampstead Heath and all of Highgate Wood and will also oversee a number of services that function across and support the four open spaces (e.g., arboriculture and tree management, waste and recycling, conservation, and ecology).

For the better performance of their duties, the Head of Conservation will be required to reside in accommodation that is provided on site and will be scheduled onto an on-call and duty manager rota with other colleagues.

Key Responsibilities:

· Serve as the primary subject matter expert for nature conservation at Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood, Queen’s Park, and West Ham Park

· Oversee the day-to-day management of Highgate Wood and most of Hampstead Heath

· Oversee arboriculture/tree management, waste management, conservation, habitat creation/restoration and management, wildlife management, water body management, and climate change adaptation across North London Open Spaces

· Lead and motivate a team of 25-30 multi-skilled professionals committed to the conservation of these four sites

· Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, including environmental protection, climate change, nature recovery, wildlife protection, flood risk management, and health and safety

About You

We are looking for a high-energy and innovative leader with a strong background in nature conservation, open space management, and team leadership.

The successful candidate will bring:

· Demonstrable experience in managing complex public open spaces

· Comprehensive experience developing and delivering biodiversity and land management programmes and projects in a range of habitats, ideally within an urban setting

· Significant experience managing complex conservation work and projects across varied landscapes

· Significant knowledge of biodiversity and wildlife management, including land and water management

· Strong experience managing a diverse team of professionals in an operational environment

· Experience of implementing legislation and policy relevant to biodiversity conservation, planning guidance, and site designation for wildlife conservation and species status designations

· A highly creative, entrepreneurial and ‘can do’ approach to problem solving, with the ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges

About the role

We are seeking a proactive and dynamic Fundraising Officer with at least two year's experience in partnerships or grants management, and an understanding of international development fundraising. You’ll join a small, collaborative team where your ideas are valued and your work has real, tangible impact.

The Fundraising Officer will initially focus on Trusts and Foundations fundraising, with a scope to expand responsibilities to support additional income streams over time. There will be lots of on-the-job and training opportunities for you to learn and develop professionally.

Job Title - Research Assistant

Contract - 1 year Fixed Term

We’re looking for a Statutory Fundraising Manager to lead and grow our statutory income at a pivotal time for Sense. Statutory fundraising is a key growth area, and this role will shape our approach to securing funding from government bodies, lottery funders and public sector partners.

Working closely with the Head of High Value Relationships, the CEO, and senior colleagues across operations and finance, you’ll develop and deliver a clear statutory fundraising strategy. You’ll collaborate with teams across the organisation to design compelling programmes, secure significant funding, and ensure excellent stewardship of our funders.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced statutory fundraiser who wants to see their work directly enable high-quality, person-centred services for disabled people with complex needs.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver a statutory fundraising strategy to maximise income from government, NHS, lottery and public sector funders.
• Identify and secure new funding opportunities, including six-figure (and ideally seven-figure) grants.

About you

You’ll be an experienced statutory fundraiser with a strong track record of securing significant funding and managing funder relationships. You’ll be confident working with senior stakeholders, comfortable with financial and impact reporting, and motivated by the opportunity to make a meaningful difference.

You’ll bring:

• Proven success securing income from statutory and lottery funders, including six-figure grants (seven-figure desirable).
• Experience developing funding proposals aligned to organisational strategy, including monitoring and evaluation frameworks.
• Strong experience managing relationships with government and public sector funders.
• Confidence in budget setting, financial reporting and income/expenditure management.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including bid and report writing.

The Marketing Communications Manager is responsible for the strategic delivery of strong marcomms campaigns and content creation that help meet programme targets, raise the profile of our work and drive increased targeted engagement with our programmes and services.

• Environment: Investigates the environmental and human impacts of resource extraction, climate finance and the actions of powerful corporations. Their reporting has contributed to changes in corporate practices and prompted customers to take action - including leaving their banks.

• Global Health: Examines the systems that shape access to healthcare, the safety and quality of medicines, and the influence of corporate and political interests on global health outcomes. The team has briefed the WHO and medical practitioners, ensuring their findings inform policy and frontline practice.

Our fundraising

The Bureau is almost entirely funded through grants and donations – without our supporters, we couldn’t do what we do. Over recent years, we’ve grown to a team of 35 people with an annual income of £2.8m, backed by a committed network of trusts, foundations, and individuals.

This is an exciting time to join our fundraising team as we build on those strong relationships and explore new ways to diversify our income.

Responsibilities

• Work with project leads to develop their ideas into a strong case for support, translating complex issues into powerful, accessible narratives for funders.

• Manage relationships with existing funders, ensuring timely reporting, effective stewardship and continued support.

• Research and develop a pipeline of new prospects.

• Write compelling proposals and applications to secure new grants.

• Collaborate with our other Fundraising Manager, who leads on the remaining themes, and provide support in those areas when needed.

• Support the Bureau in identifying ways to diversify our income, such as helping to grow our major donor programme.

• Work closely with colleagues across the Bureau - from reporters and impact producers to operations and finance – and play an active part in maintaining a collaborative, supportive workplace culture.

• Pitch in on a range of fundraising tasks, big and small, to keep the Bureau in the best position to deliver its journalism.

Skills and experience

• Fundraising track record: 5+ years’ experience raising significant money for charities or non-profits, especially from foundations (HNW experience a bonus).

• Grants expertise: confidence managing the full cycle from initial due diligence and agreements through to reporting back about our work.

• Great communicator: able to translate complex issues into strong and compelling proposals; fluent in English.

• Researcher and analyst: skilled at identifying new funding opportunities.

• Organised: able to juggle multiple priorities and deadlines with strong attention to detail.

• Collaborative: comfortable working with colleagues at all levels in a newsroom environment.

• Creative and resourceful: able to think beyond simple metrics to make a powerful case for impact.

Experience securing funds for journalism, social justice, civil society, or human rights is desirable but not essential. People with experience raising funds for campaigning or rights-based work may be especially well-suited.
