The Mountain Heritage Trust (MHT) is the national charity dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich history of mountaineering, climbing and exploration in the UK and beyond. Our collections, archives and stories document over two centuries of adventure, innovation and human endeavour in the mountains.

Thanks to support from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we are embarking on an ambitious two-year programme to improve access to our collections, expand our audiences, strengthen partnerships and build a sustainable future for the Trust.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and entrepreneurial Communications & Business Development Manager to help lead this exciting next phase of development.

About the role

This is a unique opportunity to combine communications, fundraising, partnership development and project delivery within a respected national heritage organisation.

Working closely with trustees, volunteers, consultants and partner organisations, you will:

● Lead delivery of our communications and audience development activity

● Develop new fundraising, sponsorship and income generation opportunities

● Build and manage strategic partnerships across the heritage, outdoor and education sectors

● Co-ordinate and support our volunteer programme

● Help deliver exhibitions, events, outreach activity and digital projects

● Support delivery of our National Lottery Heritage Fund project and long-term organisational sustainability

This is a varied and outward-facing role with significant scope to shape the future direction of the Trust.

About you

We are looking for someone who can combine strategic thinking with practical delivery.

You may come from a heritage, charity, cultural, environmental, education or outdoor-sector background and will have experience in three or more of:

● Fundraising, business development, income generation and grant applications

● Communications, marketing or audience development

● Social media management

● Partnership management and stakeholder engagement

● Volunteer coordination and project delivery

● Heritage, museums or archives

● Interest in outdoor recreation, climbing or mountaineering

Most importantly, you will be a strong relationship builder, an effective communicator and someone who enjoys turning ideas into action.

About the Role 
Working under the guidance of the Fundraising Events Manager and with fellow Events Officers, you will play a vital role in providing exceptional supporter experience, delivering high quality events, coordinating logistics, and helping our charity maximise income, engagement and brand impact across all fundraising events throughout the year.

What You’ll Do 

• Respond promptly and professionally to supporter queries across multiple events
• Assist with planning and delivery of a broad annual programme of events

About the role

About you

You’ll need to be a confident strategic leader with exceptional storytelling and editorial skills, a strong understanding of donor motivations and supporter journeys, with the ability to translate organisational strategy into compelling fundraising narratives.

A varied, people-facing community fundraising role at a cause that genuinely matters, ideal for someone earlier in their fundraising career who wants real responsibility from day one.

The Gurkha Welfare Trust has supported Gurkha veterans and their families in Nepal for nearly 60 years. Gurkhas have served in the British Army for more than 200 years as soldiers of extraordinary courage, loyalty, and bravery. When their service ends, we make sure they are not forgotten. We deliver financial aid, medical support, clean water, education and housing through 21 Area Welfare Centres in Nepal and India, supported by a passionate UK fundraising team based in Salisbury.

The opportunity

This is a brilliant role for someone who thrives on variety. You will be at the heart of the Trust's community fundraising programme, supporting individuals and groups raising money on our behalf, managing our presence at events like Armed Forces Day and country shows, coordinating volunteers, and helping to grow a programme that is actively expanding its national reach.

It is a fixed-term maternity cover role of at least one year, with the option to extend. The team is experienced, ambitious and supportive and this is an exciting time to be joining, with a new strategy driving real growth.

What you'll be doing

• Supporting community fundraisers - individuals, groups and volunteers - with materials, guidance and stewardship
• Managing the Trust's attendance at appropriate third-party events including Armed Forces Day and country shows engaging with supporters
• Recruiting and coordinating volunteers, helping them champion the Trust in their local communities
• Working with the Communications team to promote community fundraising across digital and social channels

You will be a first point of contact for mass participation fundraising enquiries, build meaningful and lasting relationships and actively seek fundraising opportunities.

Job Description

The post holder will be the first point of contact and lead for third party mass participation activities and work within the fundraising team on other events as needed to assist in the delivery of our events programme. The broad responsibilities will be:

• Plan and oversee our growing third-party mass participation programme, alongside the Senior Manager

Operational

• Manage and maintain all mass participation registration platforms.
• Working with the Senior Planning and Supporter Income Manager to organise and deliver our presence at various non-mass participation events e.g. Melrose 7s
• Help with the creation of marketing plans for our events programme. 
• Work with the Fundraising Administrator to create and send fundraising packs in a timely manner. 
• Maintaining the Foundation’s supporter database and keeping their details up to date.
• Maintaining the fundraising calendar of activities and tasks.
• Create detailed event plans and conduct risk assessments. 
• Set up and de-rig event equipment.

Supporter and Internal Comms 

• Work with Communications team to co-ordinate regular social media activity and PR stories.
• Actively seek new third-party event opportunities for the Foundation. 
• Work with our third-party suppliers and maintain good relationships with them. 
• Ensure the CRM system is updated to maximise learning and supporter experience.

About the role

The focus of the role will be on digital campaigns and organising and promoting fundraising events to generate new income streams for the charity. These new income streams will allow us to move away from reliance on our core funding and enable us to diversify into areas necessary for us to aim for our strategic goal and reach more clients. 

This role will work closely with the Digital Communications Manager and Service Managers to develop, lead and achieve buy-in on all campaigns and events.
