Chief Executive – full-time, permanent, London (flexible/hybrid)

The Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) is seeking a new Chief Executive to lead the organisation through the next phase of its growth and development. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for a highly experienced and energetic senior player to lead a small executive team, along with many highly dedicated and capable Institute members, as we embark on a number of key development projects which will continue to grow our charitable activities and influence in the food sector. The role is a key point of contact and ambassador for the Institute with many senior and influential stakeholders within the food sector and governments.

We are looking for a strong strategic and conceptual thinker, experienced in business and financial management, who can communicate with and influence people at all levels. The role leads a small team and will have significant hands-on involvement in day to day operational matters.

The individual will have attained a BSc or equivalent level, and have demonstrable experience in leadership and people management. They will have a broad understanding of the food (or associated) sector (and preferably experience working in the sector). Ideally, the individual will already have experience managing or running a charity, and so will have a practical understanding of charity governance best practice. 

With multiple activities from publishing through to professional recognition and from scientific and technical events and communication through to supporting the next generation of talent, the Institute is looking for a leader who can work creatively and yet in a focussed way to ensure all these activities are progressed.

Ideally, they will have previously worked for a professional membership body and are likely to have experience in the food sector.

About the role:

• Full-time, permanent. London-based (Hammersmith) with flexible working – the individual will be required to attend regular physical meetings, often in London, but with some other meetings in the UK. This role may also include some international travel. Salary: On application. No agencies.

The Press and Media Relations Officer represents the work of SCIE, acting as the point of contact for members of the press and other media representatives. The post holder is responsible for maintaining the profile and reputation of the charity and helping to achieve our influencing objectives with policymakers and leaders in the social care sector. Responsibilities include disseminating information to members of the press and other media to raise awareness of SCIE’s policy positions, research findings and improvement programmes. The post holder will help shape and deliver media influencing plans that support SCIE’s influencing objectives and use a variety of channels to achieve these objectives, including both traditional and social media.

We are looking for someone with experience of working in a collaborative way to join the Marketing and Brand team as Project Administrator on a 12-month fixed term contract basis.  You'll support the day-to-day running of the team by providing effective administration and project planning. 

This role is varied and the successful postholder will be responsible for scheduling external and internal meetings, liaising with key internal and external stakeholders, preparing reports, setting agendas and minute taking for meetings and financial administration. You'll also work with the Project Lead to provide project support to achieve implementation of key improvement projects.
 

We would like you to:

• Support the Marketing and Brand Director and Project Lead with managing project workflow (for example task tracking, updating and delegating tasks), sourcing and collating feedback and reporting as required.  
• Manage the Director Marketing and Brand’s diary including booking meetings, setting and minute-taking for key meetings.  
• Organising regular team meetings and events such as away days (booking meeting spaces, agenda, refreshments, liaising with attendees, etc)  
• Process our credit card costs and keep our budget tracker updated.

Working in a hybrid way, you’ll be attached to either our Birmingham, London or Manchester office and will report to the Project Lead.  In line with our current ways of working, you’ll be expected to be in the office at least 1 day a month, in addition to team days and this may be reviewed by Ambition.

Together with its members and partners, CSC advocates for the rights of street children from the streets to the corridors of power. Purpose of role

CSC is seeking to recruit a new CEO who will lead, empower, and mobilise the organisation and its support to its network members, whilst securing sustainable funding and investment so CSC can deliver its mission. The CEO will be supported by a passionate and talented team of staff, an experienced Senior Management Team, and a fully supportive, engaged, and inspired Board of Trustees.

Primary responsibilities

The job holder will have the following key responsibilities:

Strategic planning and priority setting

· Provide leadership and guidance in the delivery of CSC’s 2024-2029 Strategy, defining priorities to secure sustainable funding and implement the organisation’s goals.

Resource mobilisation and sustainability

• As ‘chief fundraiser’ for the organisation, take the lead in strengthening the organisation’s fundraising strategy and income generation. Be actively involved in working with the staff team to bring in new income (restricted and unrestricted) by conceptualising the presentation of programme, advocacy, policy, and research work and developing customised approaches to donors. Ensure sustainable and diverse sources of income in the face of the current challenging fundraising environment.
• Work with our Development Board and other Trustees to engage with philanthropic and corporate foundations and high net worth individuals globally, attracting new donors and continuing to grow the organisation’s partnership base and international networks.
• Develop and maintain strong positive relationships with donors (United Nations agencies, foundations, multi-laterals, bi-laterals, corporate sector, and individuals) and partners to cultivate support for CSC through appropriate presence and communication.

Building CSC’s profile

• Protect and further strengthen CSC’s external brand, profile, and credibility as a thought leader in the field of child rights and child protection in relation to street connected children.
• Act as a champion and advocate for the organisation by representing the work of CSC and its positions at the highest levels externally and across the political spectrum and globally, including with the United Nations entities and agencies, regional bodies, national governments, and partners.
• Act as CSC’s key spokesperson publicly by writing, speaking and social media posting on issues related to the rights of street connected children.
• Support the ongoing development and implementation of a communication strategy to raise the profile of CSC as the global major leader on issues related to street connected children.
• Oversee clear, targeted, engaging, and inspirational communications on all platforms, targeted at segmented audiences (funders and potential funders, influencers, decision makers, potential allies, and network members) in line with CSC’s core values and positions.

Organisation and programme management

• Manage the work of CSC to ensure an effective organisation that is operating in line with its vision, aim and objectives.
• Ensure supportive staff development and good practice to maintain a positive working environment with regular performance appraisals and professional development plans.
• Work in partnership with the experienced programme staff in delivering the programme strategy. Provide supportive guidance to the team, including robust programme planning, measurement and evaluation, and reporting processes. Support the team in conceptualising the programmes to achieve new and sustainable funding.

Finance and operations

• Oversee and ensure CSC’s fiscal soundness and strength, effective operational and financial management, consolidating financial stability, efficiency, and impact.
• Oversee monthly management accounts, carefully balancing restricted donor funding and project delivery with a balanced budget for unrestricted funded activity.
• Ensure proper financial and procurement procedures are adhered to, in order to meet the highest standards of international donors, UK auditors and the UK Charity Commission.
• Oversee processes to ensure strong negotiations and contracting of all our restricted funded projects, including robust due diligence processes for our subgrantees and donor compliance with respect to cost recovery and other requirements.

Governance

• Establish and maintain a strong working relationship with the Board.
• Ensure the Board is fully supported in carrying out its role and responsibilities and that CSC is fully compliant with UK Charity Commission guidelines, Fundraising Regulator, and good practice for non-profits.
• Ensure the preparation and presentation of an annual workplan and budget for review and approval by the Board and present periodic updates of their implementation as well as of the overall financial status of the organisation.
• Work with the independent Board of Directors in the USA, providing information and assistance so that they can fulfil their potential at establishing a solid funding and advocacy base in the US for our mutual global aim of ensuring the respect, protection, and fulfilment of the rights of street children.

Profile

Experience and skillset

• A senior and experienced people leader, with a significant and demonstrable track record in an NGO or public body, of successfully building and maintaining high performing teams and a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
• Strong financial acumen with experience of income generation.
• A proven record in the cultivation of donors and success in raising funds in the child rights or human rights sector, including from foundations, bilaterals, multilaterals, corporates, and high-net-worth-individuals.
• Demonstrated experience and success in global partnership building, convening stakeholders with diverse cultural backgrounds and driving an organisation to act as a catalyst for social change.
• A skilled influencer with strong communication (oral and written) and ambassadorial skills.
• Experience of effective advocacy with both internal and external audiences.
• Demonstrable knowledge and credibility as a leader, particularly in the field of children’s services, child rights and/or child protection.

The Amber Trust provides musical opportunities for blind and partially sighted children, including those with additional disabilities, via its Music Awards and Music Services.

Amber Music Awards fund instrumental and singing lessons, the purchase of musical instruments and specialist software, funding for concert tickets, and travel to musical activities for vision impaired children throughout the UK. In addition, there are structured programmes in its Music Services.

‘Little Amber’ is a service that offers music resources and quarterly sessions with a specially trained music practitioner to children under five and their families. ‘AmberPlus’ provides music resources and sessions offered on a termly basis to children over five who also have complex needs.’ ‘With Music in Mind’ is a new service for visually impaired children and young people with life-limiting neurodegenerative disease. Amber’s workshop scheme offers music sessions for groups of children in schools, charities and community organisations.

We have also developed extensive online music resources for teachers that are freely downloadable from anywhere in the world.

The Charity has a turnover of around £400k, employs a small central administrative team, and, for the music services, works through a large network of self-employed practitioners.

 Role purpose

The Chief Executive Officer is responsible to the Board of Trustees for leading The Amber Trust, developing and realising Amber’s vision and strategy, and playing a key ambassadorial role with funders and other senior stakeholders. The CEO is responsible for the management of the charity and its staff and the execution of Amber’s targets, plans and policies, ensuring that resources are used to best effect in meeting the needs of beneficiaries. The CEO is responsible for initiating and overseeing new initiatives that will ensure Amber plays a leading role in the field of music and blindness in children and young people into the future.

Role Description

Accountabilities: To develop, lead and manage The Amber Trust, in particular:

ABOUT THE ROLE

We have an exciting opportunity for a Head of Compliance, Risk and Audit to join the wider Compliance, Audit and Risk team at SIG! You will have the overall responsibility of keeping participants, residents, and staff safe. The team manages the development, monitoring, and reporting of several areas including but not limited to accidents, incidents, and near misses (AINMs), safety reviews, safeguarding, whistleblowing, complaints, policy and procedure, health and safety, internal audit, business continuity planning and data protection.

As The Head of Compliance, Risk and Audit, you are the lynchpin of the wider team, linking strategic vision with solid and accountable implementation. You will be responsible for developing the team in the broad space of compliance as well as in their own areas of specialism, ensuring that a transparent and accountable compliance framework is implemented and embedded in line with regulatory and legislative change.

Working Pattern: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. At least 2 days per week in central office (Islington) and our services which are in and around London, Brighton & Hove, Kent, Havering, Bedford, Luton, Nottingham, and Liverpool.
The additional 3 days can be worked from home. You may at times be required to visit a service more than 2 times within a week.

ABOUT YOU

OVERVIEW OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Line Management and leadership throughout employee lifecycle this includes; Recruitment, Onboarding, Inductions, training, support and supervision, relations, wellbeing support, and other areas.
• Formalise Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and Service Level Agreements (SLA’s) to monitor objectives.
• Provide both line management and professional consulting using best available forums and mechanisms, including meetings, support effective teamwork and communication. Facilitate a culture where constructive challenge is welcomed, and conflict is managed supportively in line with relevant policies and procedures.
• Deputise for the Director as required.

Safeguarding, Audit, and Compliance

• Oversee the compliance audits across departments and services, providing support, and follow up with operational teams on a regular basis.
• Oversee the Safeguarding infrastructure, deputising for the designated safeguarding lead (DSL) as necessary. Oversee complaints and other processes and develop these to ensure they are safe, fair, equitable, and fit for purpose.
• Support services with commissioner led quality assurance framework (QAF) inspections and those registered with the CQC to maintain their portfolios and ensure they are ready for inspection at any time to retain their registrations.
• Promote and support a positive whistleblowing culture, assist Champions, People and Culture, managers and the audit and compliance team on concerns raised and ensuring the whistleblower is protected.

Reporting and Analysis

• Attend and develop AINMs review meetings for maximum impact in terms of positive safety culture. Ensure the lessons learned from AINMs reviews, safety reviews, and safeguarding concerns are shared and feedback loops are closed.
• Review the collation and analysis of AINMs and Safeguarding alerts, developing the Audit and Compliance team, as well as other operational teams in reflection and root cause analysis

Data Protection

• Monitor the use of external data protection and compliance partners to ensure we maintain ICO requirements and maintain our Data Security Protection Toolkit Certification.
• Monitor and ensure integrity in document control, policy, and procedures as they are developed, reviewed, and published.
• Understand and support an Information Security infrastructure alongside additional teams in the organisation and support Managers and teams with training and challenges where necessary.

KEY CRITERIA

What we are looking for:

• Proven experience in complaints and incident handling, safeguarding, data protection, and audits
• Proven experience in governance systems and structures which can include auditing, risk management, investigations, complaint handling, policy, procedure, and report writing
• Experience and/or ability to coach, develop, and manage direct reports
• Background in health, social care, criminal justice, and/or supported housing systems
• IT Proficiency, ability to learn new software programs, and ability to confidently use and utilise Microsoft programs
