Purpose of the Role

To join the board as a Volunteer Finanical Director, bringing governance knowledge and strategic thinking to strengthen board effectiveness, uphold the CIC's obligations, and ensure all decisions are made in the best interests of the community we serve.

Role and Responsibilities

1. Guide the Board

• Attend two to three board meetings per month, virtual or hybrid, and come prepared to contribute
• Help ensure decisions are made properly, recorded, and followed through
• Review and respond to decisions outside of meetings within 48 to 72 hours
• Support the review of policies and raise questions when something needs attention
• Support the development of projects and programmes by contributing ideas, strategic thinking, critical insight, and creative, innovative approaches, while bringing energy, boldness, and enthusiasm.

2. Keep Us on Track

• Contribute to strategic decision-making, policy approval, and organisational oversight
• Monitor organisational performance and support the Managing Director in delivery accountability
• Flag risks early and help ensure resources are used well and in line with our mission
• Keep the needs of the communities we serve at the centre of every decision

3. Be a Critical Friend

• Challenge and support the Managing Director with honesty and care
• Ask the questions that need to be asked, even when it is uncomfortable
• Help us grow in a way that is sustainable and grounded in our values

• Be an ambassador for Zion Wellness in how you show up and speak about us
• Participate in bi-directional mentorship exchanges with young people on the programme
• Ensure safeguarding, inclusion, and community interest are never an afterthought

What We Are Looking For

You will bring:

• A strong professional background in finance, budgeting, and strategic financial planning
• Confident, values-led leadership with the ability to represent the CIC's mission at board level
• A background in leadership, social impact, or community outreach
• Experience in creative direction, entrepreneurship, or project leadership
• Understanding of organisational strategy, stakeholder engagement, and partnership development
• A genuine commitment to systemic change and the communities we serve

It would be great if you also have:

• Governance experience such as trustee, governor, or board-level involvement, though this is not essential
• Experience in a charity, CIC, or grassroots organisation
• Training and induction will be provided for the right candidate

To provide light governance oversight, technical guidance, and strategic input on the use of blockchain and digital identity systems within our verification framework.

Job description

The Pastoral and Environmental Network in the Horn of Africa (PENHA) is an African-led and inspired charity, established in 1989.  Its mission is to reduce poverty among the pastoralists in the Horn of Africa through the empowerment of communities and to foster sustainable and dignified livestock-based and non-livestock-based livelihoods. In the UK, it works with the Horn diaspora community through youth mentoring and leadership programmes. 

PENHA’s Aims and Objectives

• Sustainable livelihoods require a coordinated approach at the grassroots and policy levels. PENHA, therefore, commits itself to two goals:
• The social, cultural and economic integration of pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in the Horn of Africa
• Dynamic, diversified and sustainable pastoral and agro-pastoral livelihoods, with expanded access to information, technology, education and training
• A full and equal role for pastoral and agro-pastoralist women in public and economic life
• Peacebuilding and conflict prevention
• Development of links with the diaspora in the UK

PENHA has a team in the London Office and country chapters in the Horn of Africa region – in Ethiopia and Somaliland but works with partners in Sudan, Eritrea and Uganda as well as international partners outside the Horn of Africa.

In the UK, PENHA has a Board of Trustees, a number of research associates, volunteers and an international Advisory Group. PENHA Board of Trustees is looking for three trustees to join the London-based Board with experience in one of the following areas:

• A legal background, with financial and risk management experience;
• Knowledge of branding, marketing and fundraising, including the use of social media;
• Knowledge of the charity sector and employment law in the UK.

In addition, candidates should have an understanding of the context within which charities operate, ideally with some experience of the Horn of Africa region.

The post is unpaid and the time commitment is four to six meetings per year, with attendance at other occasional meetings and events as a representative of the charity.

The Board is responsible for submitting the Annual Report and Accounts to the Charity Commission and to Companies House. As a small charity, trustees contribute actively as part of a team in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets. PENHA is currently undergoing a new strategy development process and the candidate will help steer the organisation through the challenges ahead.

In addition, Board members are responsible for:

• Ensuring that the organisation complies with its constitution/memorandum and articles of association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
• Ensuring that the organisation pursues its objects as defined in its governing document
• Ensuring that the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects
• Safeguarding the good name and values of the organisation
• Ensuring the effective and efficient administration of the organisation
• Ensuring the financial stability of the organisation
• Protecting and managing the property of the organisation, and to ensure the proper investment of the organisation’s funds
• Appointing the senior staff and  monitoring their performance

The role

We are looking for an in-house data-driven yet deeply creative Digital Marketing Specialist to collaborate with our PR and Marketing Partners and drive our paid social strategy and content ecosystem. You will build the tracking that tells us what’s working, produce authentic user-generated content that earns attention honestly, and make sure every message, from a three-second hook to a landing-page headline, carries the Million Moons voice with care. You will be the bridge between the numbers and the narrative.

What you’ll do in collaboration with our PR and Marketing Partners:

Technical tracking & analytics

1. Implement and configure the Meta Pixel and Conversions API via Google Tag Manager for clean, reliable tracking and attribution.
2. Set up, test, and troubleshoot custom conversion events.
3. Audit tracking health regularly, resolve data discrepancies, and sharpen ad targeting.

UGC content creation & creative direction

1. Ideate, script, and produce compelling user-generated content (UGC) for Meta (Facebook, Instagram and Tiktok) campaigns and organic social.
2. Manage the content process end to end: casting creators and storytellers, directing shoots, and editing final assets.
3. Watch for creative fatigue and iterate on top-performing UGC formats (testimonials, behind-the-scenes, explainers) to grow reach and engagement, always keeping dignity and consent at the centre.

Key messaging & strategy

1. Lead the development of localized, high-performing messaging frameworks for the European and, eventually, the Global market.
2. Hold the line on brand voice and tone across every touchpoint, from ad copy to landing pages.
3. Translate broad goals into clear, persuasive copy tailored to different audience personas — without ever losing the warmth that makes people stay.

What you’ll bring

This list describes the shape of the role, not a checklist you must tick perfectly. If you’re early in your career but learn fast and care deeply, we want to hear from you.

1. Hands-on curiosity with the tools. Around 1–2 years of experience or equivalent practice through internships, freelance work, personal projects, or study with Google Tag Manager, Meta Ads Manager, and TikTok. If you’ve been teaching yourself, that counts.
2. A creative eye. Some examples of UGC or content you’ve created or directed. A polished agency portfolio is welcome, but so is a TikTok you grew from scratch or a campaign you ran for a cause or side project. We care about the thinking behind it.
3. A way with words. A feel for copywriting and an instinct for what an audience actually needs to hear. You need a good ear and the willingness to revise.
4. An analytical mindset. Comfort with (or genuine eagerness to learn) Google Analytics, and a habit of letting data guide the next decision.
5. Heart. A genuine connection to our mission. You don’t have to share every story, but you do have to care about the people telling them. This matters to us as much as any technical skill.
