Borders Forest Trust (BFT) are recruiting for a new Chief Executive .
BFT is a charity established to restore native woodland habitats to Southern Scotland, an area with the lowest percentage of native woodlands in mainland Scotland. Since 1996, we have been working towards planting trees, restoring peatlands and other natural habitats, enriching the biological diversity of around 31 sq km in the Southern Uplands. They demonstrate large scale ecological restoration in action, and inspire landowners, statutory bodies, local communities and policy makers to embrace this alternative model for land use and conservation.
The charity’s previous Director has led the organisation for five years, and BFT are in a strong position, ready to develop a new organisational strategy and grow. This is a role of great strategic importance to the charity and the role is varied, with a broad remit.
The Chief Executive role has organisational responsibility for 12 members of staff, some office based but most out and about across the countryside in which BFT works.
As Chief Executive, you’ll bring proven senior leadership experience and the ability to get the best from staff and volunteers. A natural communicator, you’ll engage confidently with a wide range of people – from volunteers and donors to policymakers and conservation experts.
You’ll have experience generating significant income in the not-for-profit sector, alongside strengths in strategic planning and programme development. Passionate about conservation, you’ll be an inspiring ambassador for Borders Forest Trust, able to share our impact and build lasting partnerships that help us achieve our vision.
This role is hybrid based, with candidates being in the Head Office in Jedburgh (Scottish Borders) once or twice weekly, with other time spent out and about across the geography BFT covers. Responsibilities:

- Oversee financial modelling and appraisal of large-scale development and regeneration projects, providing clear insight to senior stakeholders and helping to guide investment decisions
- Manage property security charging processes to support funding arrangements, including due diligence, asset data validation, and liaison with legal and valuation professionals to ensure assets are eligible and properly charged
- Production and maintenance of short-, medium and long-term cash flow forecasts, ensuring sufficient liquidity for operational and strategic needs, while supporting informed financial decision-making

Westway Trust is seeking a highly motivated Caretaker who will be passionate about developing and maintaining high standards of security and presentation of buildings across the 23 acres of estate, to ensure continuity of the use of the buildings and grounds for tenants and community use. This role will be critical to ensuring management of a vibrant, diverse and thriving estate.
You will be an enthusiastic individual with a good level of customer service who will have the ability to deal confidently with tenants and the general public.
Key responsibilities of the role include but not limited to:
- Responsible for light maintenance and housekeeping duties across the Trust’s buildings and estate.
- Perform simple repairs and maintenance tasks as required.
- Conduct security checks of the Trust’s properties across the estate, involving opening buildings and locking all doors and windows when not in operation.
- Inspecting buildings, including heating, cooling, lighting and alarm systems to make sure they are in good working order.
- For the general upkeep of buildings, sourcing, booking and supervising contractors for minor repairs working with the Facilities Team.
- Work with the Grounds & Gardens team to ensure Westway Trust’s land remains clean and tidy at all times (fly-tipping/bins/parking).
- Liaising with colleagues to assist in the unit base parking operations.
- Monitoring of bin collections and cleaning and re-arranging as required.
- Preparing rooms for meetings and events, including the moving of equipment such as tables and chairs.
- Liaising with Events Team to deliver support to events.
Knowledge and Experience:
- Educated to GCSE standard or equivalent.
- Three years of working with a property team or as a caretaker or in a similar role.
- Electrical and plumbing experience and / or qualification is desirable but not essential.
- Painting/decorating experience is desirable but not essential
- Good understanding of technical information, building construction and design.
- Practical ability to use and maintain tools.
- Experience of working in public open spaces.
- Good people management relationships.
- Have good time management, organisational, communication and administrative skills with the ability to work under pressure.
- Proficient at managing databases and programmes.
- Experience of handling anti-social behavior matters.
- A keen eye for detail and presentation in all aspects of work.
- Good knowledge of the local area would be particularly helpful.

About the Role
This is a rare opportunity to take a senior leadership role at North London Open Spaces, and directly contribute to and make a meaningful impact in the conservation and protection of these cherished green spaces.
As a member of the senior management team, the successful candidate will serve as the primary subject matter expert at NLOS for nature conservation, conceiving and leading on initiatives, advising colleagues, and working collaboratively both internally and externally. They will have responsibility for overseeing the day-to-day management of most of Hampstead Heath and all of Highgate Wood, and will also oversee a number of services that function across and support the four open spaces (eg, arboriculture and tree management, waste and recycling, conservation, and ecology).
For the better performance of their duties, the Head of Conservation will be required to reside in accommodation that is provided on site and will be scheduled onto an on-call and duty manager rota with other colleagues.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary subject matter expert for nature conservation at Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood, Queen’s Park, and West Ham Park
- Oversee the day-to-day management of Highgate Wood and most of Hampstead Heath
- Oversee arboriculture / tree management, waste management, conservation, habitat creation/restoration and management, wildlife management, water body management, and climate change adaptation across North London Open Spaces
- Lead and motivate a team of 25-30 multi-skilled professionals committed to the conservation of these four sites
- Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation, including environmental protection, climate change, nature recovery, wildlife protection, flood risk management, and health and safety.
About You
We are looking for a high-energy and innovative leader with a strong background in nature conservation, open space management, and team leadership.
The successful candidate will bring:
- Demonstrable experience in managing complex public open spaces.
- Comprehensive experience developing and delivering biodiversity and land management programmes and projects in a range of habitats, ideally within an urban setting.
- Significant experience managing complex conservation work and projects across varied landscapes
- Significant knowledge of biodiversity and wildlife management, including land and water management.
- Strong experience managing a diverse team of professionals in an operational environment.
- Experience of implementing legislation and policy relevant to biodiversity conservation, planning guidance, and site designation for wildlife conservation and species status designations.
- A highly creative, entrepreneurial and ‘can do’ approach to problem solving, with the ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges.
- Strong quantitative skills and comfort interrogating and analysing data and budgets.

- Provide ad hoc analysis to stakeholders in the partnered units. This will often include a combination of financial and non-financial data to deliver information that improves decision making and planning.

- For the partnered units, maintain an accurate record of financial approvers on the finance system. This includes making any necessary changes, and regularly monitoring the financial approvers to ensure they are correct.
- Review, and seek regular feedback from stakeholders on, the usefulness of the suite of financial reports available to budget holders. Pass feedback to the Head of Financial Planning & Business Partnering and the Head of Financial Reporting & Analysis.
- Using the suite of training materials developed by senior members of the team, deliver regular training to budget holders in the partnered units.
