The Early Education and Childcare Coalition is a policy and advocacy partnership working to transform the system for families. We unite the voices of all those with a stake in the future of early education and childcare – children, parents, providers, the early years workforce and the business community. Founded by more than 30 organisations, our members are parent campaign groups, child advocacy organisations, early childhood experts, antipoverty campaigners, provider membership bodies, trade unions and business lobbying groups.
Our vision is of a high-quality, inclusive system of early education and childcare that is accessible to all children, affordable for parents, fairly funded for providers, and offers decent pay and conditions for the workforce. Our mission is to rescue and reform the system by combining urgent policy measures to stabilise the sector with long-term transformation.
About us
The Coalition was co-designed throughout 2022 by more than 30 organisations and launched publicly in 2023. Since then, we have gone from strength to strength, concluding a successful hosting relationship and becoming an independent organisation in the summer of 2025, with a team of eight staff influencing policymaking and connecting families, providers and decision-makers through advocacy, co-production and convening.
Please note that the Coalition is in the process of registering as a charity; therefore, it is expected that board members will transition to become trustees within the next year.
About you
We are looking to grow our new board and strengthen our succession planning. Therefore, board membership could include taking on senior roles within the Board following a familiarisation period and supported development.
We would therefore welcome applications from those who have held board officer roles in the past, including experienced Chairs. We are also particularly interested in applications from people who have experience in one or more of the following areas:
Fundraising
Policy analysis and research
Campaigning/influencing
Legal and compliance
HR
Experience of working on issues related to children and families
Experience of working in other coalitions/alliances or movement building
In order to maintain balance and equity across our membership and manage conflicts of interest, applicants should not have a current direct link to the Coalition. For example, we cannot accept applications from individuals who are currently working for a member or supporter organisation.
About the role
Board members will work closely with the Coalition’s Executive Director, staff team and Advisory Group to ensure the success of the organisation to meet its aim to transform early education and childcare in England.
Board members are legally responsible for running the company, making sure information is sent to Companies House on time, setting the strategic direction of the organisation, monitoring progress, ensuring good governance and supporting the staff team in their work.
Board members must follow the rules set out in the company’s Articles of Association, agree to act in the best interests of the organisation and raise any conflicts of interests throughout their term.
Responsibilities:
Provide financial oversight of the organisation including overseeing budgeting, monitoring performance, signing off accounts, financial reporting and fundraising. (The Board Treasurer will lead on financial management and assessing financial risk, but financial oversight is a duty of all board members).
Work with other board members to continue growing the Board, identifying skill gaps, organisational needs and participating in the recruitment and onboarding of new board members.
Work with other board members to implement the strategic plan, contributing ideas and proposals.
Monitor progress on strategy through Board and other meetings.
Provide support to the Executive Director on operational matters, including but not limited to HR, legal compliance, communications and membership matters and where appropriate, policy developments.
Attend Board meetings, or when unable to attend, communicate ideas and comments to the Coalition’s Executive Director/Board Chair in advance of the meeting.
Work with other board members to identify and manage potential risks and opportunities to the company’s operations, finances and reputation.
Proactively promote the work of the Coalition through personal and professional networks.
In addition, Board members may be invited to:
Represent the Coalition at appropriate meetings and events.
Participate in the work of the Coalition as appropriate (e.g. working groups, projects or recruitment panels).

Board members are appointed for a term of three years, and they may be reappointed for a further three-year period.
All directors will be members (guarantors) of the company and all members (guarantors) will be directors, with a personal liability of £1 and listed on documents filed at Companies House.
Board members must be at least 18 years old, a UK resident and not disqualified from acting as a company director.

Time commitment
Board members will be required to attend up to five board meetings per year for approximately two hours each (with up to 4 hours preparation time). These are usually held on Zoom, with one away day in London expected per year with the staff team. Any travel and other related and reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed.
Papers will be shared ahead of time and reading and preparation is expected ahead of each meeting.
Board members may also be asked between meetings to act as signatories, give time to contribute to reports, applications and accounts, and provide advice and guidance to the Executive Director and wider staff team on specific topics and/ or issues.
The predicted time commitment for the Board members is estimated at 2-4 hours per month depending on Board role with one away day.

This is a voluntary, unpaid role with reasonable expenses for in-person meetings paid in advance or reimbursed.

The Wren Project is a volunteer-led charity that provides free, remote, one-to-one, ongoing listening support for people in distress and living with autoimmune disease. There are over 120 autoimmune diseases currently diagnosed by the NHS and these include Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis and Crohn's disease- they are all chronic illnesses which can have life altering impacts.
Volunteers at the Wren Project provide emotional listening support to people with autoimmune disease (our Wrens). In appointments, volunteers offer listening support, where Wrens can talk about how autoimmune disease is impacting their life, without giving advice or offering solutions. Volunteers join a regular fortnightly shift during which they meet with up to 2 Wrens in two 50-minute appointments.
Volunteers do not need to have qualifications or any knowledge or experience of autoimmune disease. We are looking for warm, empathetic, caring and resilient individuals who want to help others and have the time to offer ongoing, non-judgemental, listening support.
We are the only charity in the UK who provide support for all autoimmune diseases. Our vision is to build support and community for all four million people in the UK diagnosed with autoimmune disease. Our service would not be possible without the commitment, empathy and support of our volunteers.
WHAT VOLUNTEERING FOR US INVOLVES:

What are we building?
Flint is a new anti-cheat engine, fully open source, cross-platform, and designed from the ground up for reusability in gaming communities like DFBHD, by game development hobbyists and game studios of any size. It carries forward a decade of lessons from the legacy of DFBHD's Evosoft ACP (2008-2018) and its commercial spin-off.
Ember is an implementation and proof of concept of Flint, built specifically for the DF:BHD community.
All products as part of this project are open-source. There's no black-box knowledge (i.e. questionable kernel driver logic). You can read every line of code, understand exactly what it does, and build/verify it yourself.
By being open-source, running under the AGPL-3.0 license (dubbed "copy-left"), we invite everyone to join us to help shape the direction. Experts can challenge the logic and algorithms, and contribute additional features, detections, fixes and platform support.
How does Flint work?
Flint contains a Watchdog (IPC), detection algorithms, fingerprinting (i.e. hardware ID logic), layered signal scoring, and it only watches and reports. It observes system state, memory patterns, loaded modules, input behaviour, and timing anomalies.
But if cheaters can read the source, can't they just bypass it? Sure, they can try. Flint (and Ember by extension) contain build- and runtime randomizations and stack all independent signals, making bypassing all detections at once a sizable task. 100% Is impossible. We're not building a wall, we're imposing a tax.
A false positive that bans or stains the reputation of a legitimate player is the worst possible outcome and a critical issue. Signal scoring is highly conservative by design, and (continuously) tuned for confidence and accuracy.
What is Ember?
Ember uses Flint as its core engine, and comes with a player-facing anti-cheat client (Agent), a gameserver component (Relay), a player-facing web portal (Lobby), an administrative portal (Forge) and an API/backend.
The API is being used by the Lobby, which means anyone can consume all Lobby-visible data for their own products. Relay can be extended with custom small C#.NET plugins, using Events & Actions exposed by Relay. Plugins are near-limitless: interacting with gameplay statistics, custom rule enforcement and various ways of player interaction (i.e. chat commands).
Ember isn't going to replace or sideline the tools the community has already built. Relay's plugin system exists so server hosters can extend it to fit their needs, and all the data surfaced through the Lobby (API) is designed to give the community more to work with to make their tools better.
Relay additionally offers "Ember-only" and "Match-mode" options. Ember-only restricts the gameserver for users running the Agent. Match-mode bypasses ban-waves, meaning accumulated signals that cross a certain threshold, result in the player immediately getting kicked from the server, rather than waiting for a ban wave.
Ember has no account system. Your identity is your hardware, a fingerprint (hardware IDs) collected at launch. You pick a display name, set a 4-digit PIN, and you're in. You can optionally add an e-mail address for recovery purposes. If you upgrade your PC, through fuzzy matching, a simple migration flow is handled automatically. Slightly more complex upgrades are handled with the PIN and/or e-mail address.
Erm, but my data?
Nothing leaves your PC unhashed or unprotected. Your e-mail address is optional and (along with your PIN) encrypted in the database.
What's next?
The project is currently in active design and early implementation phase. Architectural and research docs are complete, and we're just starting the first tests.
As soon as the system is live and operational, and you want to get involved, you don't need to be a security expert or a software engineer. If you have an interest in contributing, there's work here for you. The binaries are being written in C#.NET 10. Python is used for the Ember backend/API, and public facing pages are using TypeScript (React, TBD).

Winchester and District Cats Protection is a long-standing branch whose volunteer numbers have dwindled, reducing their activity level. We are rebuilding the team and are looking for an energetic Branch Team Leader to coordinate the branch’s activities, working with existing volunteers and supporting new ones as we expand. Our ideal candidate of course must be a cat lover, but should also have excellent people skills and be able to communicate effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds. Although cat welfare experience is preferable, this is not as important as management skills and the enthusiasm to get stuck into something new. Full training and support will be provided.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING?
Receiving, sorting, cataloguing and storing chilled and ambient food and preparing orders for delivery.
Ensuring food quality and safety by checking ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates.
Unpacking deliveries, recording and categorising food.
Assembling food orders.
Maintaining health and safety and hygiene standards.
Helping with cleaning and other routine tasks.
PERSON SPECIFICATION: You must...
Be reasonably physically fit to carry out tasks, including lifting and loading.
Be reliable and able to commit to an agreed session/day.
Speak English well in order to understand and follow instructions and health and safety rules.
Have basic literacy and numeracy skills to record details of donated food.
Be able to work to Health and Safety standards.
Be happy to complete tasks independently according to instruction.
Be positive, friendly and enthusiastic about tackling food waste and food insecurity.
LOCATION
We are located in Maynard House, New Smithfield Market, Openshaw, M11 2WJ, which is easily reachable on public transport. We have free-onsite parking and secure storage for bicycles.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
You must be a UK resident and living within easy commuting distance of our base in order to volunteer with us. This is because our volunteers must be able to reliably commit to regular shifts for our roles.

Chatterbox Befrienders offer one-to-one telephone support and will call a client once a week offering companionship and a listening ear for an individual who might otherwise go unheard. Chatterbox volunteers befriend a variety of people including carers, socially isolated individuals who are struggling with loneliness, people with ill health and those that
have been bereaved.
THIS ROLE COULD BE FOR YOU IF:

REQUIREMENTS OF A BEFRIENDER INCLUDE:
- Calling your client once a week for a chat of up to 45 minutes; this is a 26 week initial commitment, at the end of which each client’s needs are reviewed
- Completing an online call log record promptly after each phone call
- Ensuring immediate contact with the Chatterbox Coordinators if you feel that the client might be a risk to themselves or others
- Liaising with the Chatterbox Coordinator on a regular basis regarding the service, as well as discussing personal learning and development needs
- Respecting service standards, appropriate boundaries and recognising the range of policies and procedures that impact on befriending vulnerable adults

RSPCA Alton, Haslemere & Petersfield Branch
We are looking for volunteers to join our Trustee board with expertise in any of these areas:

Overview
We are looking for enthusiastic people to take the role as a Charity Trustee, who could devote some time to volunteer for the Alton, Haslemere & Petersfield Branch and support us in boosting our local animal welfare work. Alongside using your expertise, this role will enable you to enhance how we care for and prevent cruelty to animals and drive the implementation of key initiatives. You will serve on the governing body of the charity and be instrumental, alongside fellow Trustees, in the running of the Branch and the implementation of a development plan. At a minimum, you would normally be expected to attend a monthly online committee meeting and to spend further time driving forward our activities.
The Alton, Haslemere & Petersfield RSPCA Branch
We are the local branch of the national RSPCA, but we are also a separately registered charity looking after animals in our local area.
The Branch is in an enviable financial position and employs an experienced member of staff as Branch Manager. Once additional Trustees are in place, we expect to move towards CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation) status.

About Kith & Kids
We provide activities, opportunities, information, and support for people with a learning disability or autism, their parents and siblings.
For all our projects and activities we are dependent on volunteers.
Our Spring Project
9.30am to 5.30pm, Sat 28th March – Wed 1st April, in north London
We are currently looking for energetic and enthusiastic volunteers, to join us on our fantastic fun-filled Spring Social Development Project.
Volunteers and our members who have disabilities get to know each other as they take part in fun and challenging workshops including sports & games, arts & crafts, cooking and enjoying a day out in London.
What you'll do
On the project you and a fellow volunteer will be paired with one of our members with a learning disability or autism. You'll support and encourage them to take part in a wide range of activities led by professional therapists and workshop leaders.
Our core activities are sports & games, arts & crafts, drama, and music. Previous additional workshops have also included photography, football and cooking and you’ll plan your own exciting outing around London with a fellow volunteer and the Kith & Kids member you're linked with.
Not only is it a time full of fun and games for you and our members, but you are also a vital part in supporting our members to develop their social skills in a day-to-day environment.

What you need
You do not need experience. Full disability awareness training will be provided before you begin volunteering with us.
The only requirements we ask of you are enthusiasm, energy and to be open-minded.

How much time?
The project runs for 5 days, 9.30am to 5.30pm, Sat 28th March – Wed 1st April.
Everyone gets the most out of the project if you come for the full five days as you'll build a close relationship with the member you'll have been supporting and will create the most impact.

Youth Helper work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By supporting our Youth Leaders to deliver a sessions across our range of programmes. In this role, you'll support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Helpers also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.
