About Lights Up

Lights Up was established shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic to support theatre and creative activity. The timing was challenging: theatres subsequently remained closed for a prolonged period and the environment in which the charity had been established changed considerably.

The existing trustees now believe that Lights Up's charitable structure and fundraising capability could be put to wider social use. In particular, we are exploring an evolution of the charity that would enable it to provide umbrella funding and support for organisations and initiatives tackling homelessness.

No change of objects has yet been made. As part of this process, and following discussions with the Charity Commission, we are recruiting a new Board of Trustees before the proposed changes are considered and progressed.

The opportunity

We are looking for new trustees to help oversee the next stage of Lights Up's development.

One of the founding trustees will remain with the charity in an operational role as Executive Founder, reporting to and accountable to the Board. The other founding trustee will retire from the Board.

The new trustees will therefore have a genuine governance role: overseeing the charity's strategy, finances, regulatory compliance and future direction, including consideration and implementation of any approved changes to its charitable objects.

If the proposed new model proceeds, the charity does not intend to make decisions about the distribution of homelessness funding based solely on its own expertise. Funding allocations will be informed by advice from an appropriate independent third-party expert with relevant sector knowledge.

Who are we looking for?

We would particularly welcome applications from people interested in becoming a trustee for the first time. Previous charity or trustee experience is not required.

We are looking for people with sound judgement, integrity and an interest in using their skills to support effective charitable governance.

Experience in finance, law, governance, grant-making, fundraising, homelessness, social impact or the voluntary sector would be useful, but is not essential.

We are also seeking a Chair of Trustees, for whom previous governance or relevant board-level experience is expected.

Commitment

The roles are voluntary and primarily governance-focused. We anticipate approximately four Board meetings each year, predominantly held remotely, together with occasional additional input when required.

The Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education (CASE) is a collaboration of professional bodies and scientific societies established to set and uphold standards of training and education in clinical ultrasound (sonography) in the UK. This is achieved through accreditation of sonographic courses.  CASE works closely with universities and other higher-education institutions to ensure the highest standards are met.

CASE is a not-for-profit organisation which relies on volunteers to commit their time to ensure the students who graduate from our accredited courses do so with the best in education, mentor support and clinical competency and thus preparing the sonographic workforce of the future.

In over 20 years of operation, the reputation of CASE accreditation as the accepted standard for sonographic education in the UK has grown and become accepted across the NHS and independent sector healthcare providers. In the busy and pressurised context of healthcare provision and diagnosis, CASE accreditation provides the reassurance that a sonographer has been trained to a high standard.

The group of member organisations that provide strategic oversight has operated as a relatively informal collaboration but is now looking to become a legally constituted company.

About the role

CASE is seeking to appoint a part time Independent Chair to provide supportive leadership for the Member Organisations Group. 

The Chair of CASE will:

• Chair the Case Member Organisations’ Board which meets virtually on a quarterly basis, allocating additional time for meeting preparation and follow up. Administrative support is provided by the BMUS.
• Build relationships with Sonography policy leaders within the member organisations and with their representatives that make up the CASE committee, from which the programme of accreditation activity and the setting of standards is conducted. This would usually be via the Committee chair.
• Take part with Board members in increasing the influence of CASE at health policy level across the UK
• Ensure that the Board develops a clear strategy for incorporation, financial sustainability and continuing growth. 
• Work with the CASE Committee Chair to ensure direct communication channels between the strategic and operational arms of CASE are maintained;
• Ensure that the MOs adhere to the terms of reference as set out in the Consortium’s Memorandum of Agreement;
• Act as advisor for the CASE Coordinator regarding actions and issues pertinent to the MOs;
• Provide an independent perspective to ensure the accuracy and quality of strategic CASE documentation including the business strategy, risk register, and policy documents;
• Collaborate with the CASE Co-ordinator to ensure an annual report is produced, providing a record of activity across the CASE year.

Term of Office

The Chair is appointed for a 2-year term.  An extension to the term of office is possible by mutual agreement between the individual and the member organisations.

Expected Time Commitment

Variable, but up to 4 days per year for meetings plus up to 4 days for dealing with documentation, emails and actions.

Compensation

This is a volunteer role, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

The person

• A proven track record of organisational and leadership skills with an ability to motivate and bring people together.
• Experience of committee work and management of meetings.
• Strong inter-personal and relationship skills.
• Ability to be impartial, discreet and exercise sound judgement.
• Excellent communication skills, with an ability to listen and engage effectively and respond with tact and diplomacy.
• Partnership working is critical to this role and the candidate will need to be able to demonstrate strong influencing, negotiating and collaborative skills.
• An interest in the delivery of high quality clinical services is required but previous experience in health care is not essential.

About ABT and Refutrees - Aid Box Trading (ABT), the trading subsidiary of Aid Box Community (ABC), is seeking a voluntary Co-Director to join the existing Director to provide strategic leadership, financial oversight and robust governance for its small trading operation — Refutrees seasonal project. This is a seasonal project running between November and December, so this role is most active between these dates with some work to tie up accounts in January/February.  

Refutrees is Aid Box Community’s much‑loved seasonal fundraiser, selling around 1500 locally grown Christmas trees each year and generating over £30,000 profit to support refugees and people seeking asylum in Bristol. Powered by hundreds of volunteers and thousands of customers, it operates as a vibrant community enterprise each festive season, with all profits funding essential support, crisis assistance, and wellbeing activities for our service users.  

This role is ideal for someone with senior management or governance experience who wants to make a meaningful contribution to a charity supporting refugees and asylum seekers.

What will you be doing? 

As part of a governing board, you’ll:

• Participating in training and occasional college visits 

The time commitment is manageable alongside a full-time role—and many employers actively support staff to take on governance roles as part of their professional development. 

Where you’ll be needed 

Some colleges offer remote governance and meetings take place online. This may suit you best, or we may suggest a role where you volunteer on a hybrid basis at a college within a reasonable distance from you. We are recruiting governors for colleges across England, with new opportunities added regularly.

Hart Plain Junior School is looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers to join our governing board.  You do not need to work in education or have previous governance experience.  We are interested in people who care about children’s education, can consider issues thoughtfully and are willing to ask constructive questions.

School governors play an important strategic role.  Working as a team, our governors help ensure that the school has a clear direction, provides the best possible education for every pupil and uses its resources effectively.

What will you do?

As a governor, you will help the governing board to:

• Shape the school’s vision, ethos and strategic direction
• Support and constructively challenge school leaders
• Monitor pupils’ educational performance and wellbeing
• Help ensure that all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, can access a high-quality education
• Oversee the school’s finances and ensure public money is used effectively
• Review policies and monitor the school’s compliance with its statutory responsibilities
• Represent the interests of pupils and the wider school community
• Contribute to important decisions about the school’s future

Governors do not become involved in the school’s day-to-day management.  Their role is to look at the bigger picture, test the evidence presented to them and provide both support and appropriate challenge.

Who are we looking for?

You do not need to be a parent or an education specialist.  We welcome people from different professional and personal backgrounds who can bring new ideas, experiences and perspectives to the board.

Experience in areas such as finance, HR, leadership, data, risk management, law, marketing, communications, community engagement or education would be valuable, but it is not essential.  Your judgement, commitment and willingness to learn are just as important.

• Undertake relevant governor training
• Visit the school during the working day approximately 2-3 times each year

Job Purpose

The HR Manager plays a vital role in supporting the vision and mission of Children With Voices by ensuring that all HR practices are fair, compliant, and aligned with safeguarding, equity, and community wellbeing. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of human resources, from recruitment and staff development to compliance and wellbeing initiatives. The HR Manager will be instrumental in creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where staff, volunteers, and young people can thrive.

Key Responsibilities

• Leading our HR function and setting the standard for how we recruit, support and look after everyone here
• Leading our HR Support and Administration volunteers, giving them direction and helping them develop
• Making sure our policies and practices hold up against UK employment law and safeguarding requirements
• Advising managers on people matters, and telling us plainly when something needs paid professional or legal advice
• Building fair, inclusive and safe recruitment and onboarding across staff and volunteers
• Overseeing HR and volunteer records so they are accurate, secure and compliant with data protection
• Helping us build honest processes for supervision, wellbeing and handling concerns
• Ensure workplace compliance with health and safety legislation.
• Embed safeguarding responsibilities across all HR practices, ensuring no child or vulnerable adult falls through the gaps.

Person Specification

Essential Skills & Experience:

• Proven experience in an HR management role, ideally within the charity or community sector.
• Strong knowledge of UK employment law, HR compliance, and safeguarding requirements.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust at all levels.
• Experience managing recruitment, onboarding, and training processes.
• Ability to mediate and resolve conflicts in a fair, professional, and sensitive manner.
• Strong organisational skills with attention to detail and confidentiality.
• Commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and community empowerment.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

Senior HR experience and current knowledge of UK employment law. Real experience of leading a team, because you will have volunteers looking to you. The judgement to know what you can decide and what needs escalating. Absolute discretion, as you will handle confidential information. Charity experience is welcome but not essential.

• CIPD qualification (Level 5 or above) or equivalent HR certification.
• Experience working with volunteers, young people, or community-focused organisations.
• Knowledge of charity governance and regulatory frameworks.
• Experience in developing wellbeing or mental health initiatives.
