Job description

CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES (VOLUNTEER ROLE)

Lead the Future of a Movement Built to End Loneliness

Loneliness is one of the greatest challenges facing our communities today. Every day, people across London feel invisible, disconnected and alone — not because they have nobody around them, but because they don’t feel seen, valued or like they truly belong.

SUNSHINE was created to change that.

Born from a deeply personal promise that nobody should have to face loneliness alone, SUNSHINE is building a movement where connection becomes a lifeline and belonging becomes a right.

Now, as we prepare to launch our programmes and grow our impact, we are entering a new chapter — and we are searching for an exceptional leader to help guide it.

We are recruiting our Founding Chair of the Board of Trustees.

This is not an ordinary governance role. This is an opportunity to help shape the future of a charity that could change thousands of lives.

A Moment of Transition

Our Founder, who created SUNSHINE from lived experience and a deep personal promise, will be stepping down from the role of Chair to focus on building and running the charity day‑to‑day.

We are now seeking a compassionate, strategic and inspiring leader to take on the role of Chair — someone who can guide the Board, support the Founder, and help ensure SUNSHINE grows with integrity, purpose and heart.

You will be joining at the most formative moment in our history. You will help shape our governance, our direction and our future. You will be part of the team that builds SUNSHINE from the ground up.

Your Mission as Chair

As our Founding Chair, you will:

  • Lead and develop SUNSHINE’s first Board of Trustees.

  • Provide strategic oversight, guidance and support to the Founder/CEO.

  • Ensure strong governance, accountability and long‑term sustainability.

  • Lead the Board of Trustees, their performance, and keep them engaged, informed and fully motivated.

  • Champion SUNSHINE’s mission across London and beyond.

  • Support the creation of a culture rooted in kindness, dignity and belonging

Your leadership will help ensure that SUNSHINE grows responsibly, ethically and with the compassion that defines us.

Who You Are

  • You don’t need decades of charity governance experience.
  • You don’t need to be a seasoned Chair. You simply need to be someone who leads with heart, clarity and purpose.

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Compassionate and values‑driven
  • Collaborative and supportive
  • Strategic and thoughtful
  • Reliable and committed
  • Passionate about ending loneliness
  • Excited to help build something meaningful from the very beginning

Why This Role Matters

  • Because every decision you help shape…
  • Every conversation you guide…
  • Every moment of leadership you offer…

Will directly help someone feel seen, valued and connected.

Your leadership will help create:

  • Communities where friendships begin.

  • Programmes where people feel welcomed.

  • Spaces where nobody feels invisible.

  • A movement that brings hope to thousands.

This is your chance to leave a legacy that will outlive all of us.

Why Join SUNSHINE?

As our Founding Chair, you will:

  • Help build a new charity at its most defining moment.

  • Shape the governance and future direction of the organisation.

  • Work alongside a passionate Founder and leadership team.

  • Lead a Board committed to compassion, dignity and belonging.

  • Play a central role in ending loneliness across London.

Most importantly… You will help ensure that fewer people have to experience the pain of loneliness.

A Personal Message from the Founder

“I started SUNSHINE because I watched someone I love experience a loneliness that no one should ever have to endure. SUNSHINE is my promise that we will keep creating places where people feel seen, valued and connected.

As I step down from the role of Chair to focus on building and running the charity, I’m looking for someone who can help guide SUNSHINE into its next chapter — someone who leads with kindness, clarity and heart.

If our vision speaks to you, I’d be honoured to welcome you as our Founding Chair.

Together, we can build a future where nobody has to face loneliness alone.”

Scott, Founder of SUNSHINE
