About the position

About The Role

By providing an excellent visitor experience as a member of the Living History team, you will be bringing wetlands throughout history, and the history of the mere to life by delivering key messages about how important wetlands are for food, materials, medicine and livelihoods. This encourages our visitors to make the most of their visit to Martin Mere, and to understand and support our work to save wetlands for wildlife and people.

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team. You’ll get a warm welcome, including information on training, equipment and anything else you need.

Overview of the role

This is an excellent opportunity if you are interested in collectables, researching unusual items, and love photographing objects making them look their best! The time you dedicate will ensure that we make more funds from the sale of donated items.

Our shops play an essential role in raising the profile of the RSPCA in our local community and funds for our branch, so that we can continue our vital animal welfare work. This role is based in our Chesham shop which sells a mixture of donated items, including clothes, books, bric-a-brac and collectables, and a selection of new items.

What you will be doing 

• Researching and listing the items for sale in our dedicated eBay store.

• A picture is worth 1,000 words so ensuring that attractive photographs are taken to boost eBay sales.

• Writing detailed and accurate descriptions of items.

• Responding in a timely and professional manner to any enquiries received from potential buyers. 

• Monitoring our eBay listings and account to keep them up to date. 

• Packaging items appropriately before taking them to the local post office and posting to the buyer. Parcels are small to medium sized.

• Maintaining accurate records of listed and sold items.

What we are looking for in a volunteer eCommerce Assistant

• Ideally, you would have experience in selling items on eBay or other online selling sites.

• Can create attractive and accurate listings for a wide variety of items. 

• IT literacy and ability to use our laptop is required, as is the ability to use a mobile phone (provided) to take and upload clear photographs. 

• Capable of researching the origin and value of items using a variety of sources. 

• Reliability and an ongoing commitment are required.  Someone who can offer approximately 2 hours on their chosen day(s).  The shops are open Mon-Sat, between 9.30am-5pm and the role can be carried out at any time during opening hours.  We are happy to divide the role between several volunteers. 

• Capable of working with minimal supervision, once fully trained. 

• Volunteers need to be aged 18 or over.

• This role is subject to a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Services) to ensure the safety of children and vulnerable adults.

The IT support role is vital to the organisation, as they will have the responsibility for the maintenance of the technical appliances used in the organisation. The Business Development Assistant supports New Leaf Fertility Partners in identifying and nurturing partnerships, networking opportunities and relationships that will help New Leaf grow its presence and impact globally. The role focuses on research, outreach and relationship support, helping to build the connections that will allow New Leaf to serve more people in the region.

This is a proactive, relationship-focused role for someone who understands the local private sector landscape or health and development ecosystem. It does not involve clinical responsibilities or client management, but sits at the centre of New Leaf's growth strategy in the region.

Key responsibilities

Local research and prospecting

• Research fertility communities and develop potential partnerships globally
• Identify opportunities for New Leaf to collaborate, co-create on a global scale
• Monitor the fertility landscape for relevant opportunities

Outreach and proposals

• Support outreach to agencies, clinics, organisations, community leaders and businesses
• Help develop proposals and partnership briefs
• Assist in preparing materials for meetings and introductions

Relationship tracking

• Maintain records of contacts, meetings and follow-ups
• Help ensure local relationships are nurtured and kept active over time
• Work closely with the Ghana team to keep strategy and priorities aligned

Role boundaries

The Business Development Assistant will not make commitments on behalf of New Leaf, negotiate terms independently, or engage with clinical or patient-related matters. All significant external communications should be reviewed with the Operations Manager before being sent.

Skills and qualities

• Background or strong interest in business, partnerships, fundraising or the development sector
• Excellent written communication and the confidence to reach out to new contacts
• Organised and methodical, with strong attention to detail
• Comfortable working independently in a remote setting
• Familiarity with CRM tools or spreadsheets is helpful

Working arrangement

This is a flexible, part-time volunteer role of approximately 5–8 hours per week. Exact hours will be agreed with the Operations Manager. The scope of the role may grow as New Leaf's development activity expands.

The purpose of this role is to help New Leaf build the relationships and resources it needs to grow so that more people can access the support, education and guidance they deserve.
