Head of Volunteering (Volunteer Role)
SUNSHINE Charity – Ending Loneliness for Londoners and Beyond
Do you believe no one should feel alone?
At SUNSHINE Charity, we’re a grassrotts start-up volunteer-powered charity building something bold, hopeful, and deeply human — a movement to end loneliness for Londoners and, one day, far beyond. But right now, at this very early and precious stage of our journey, we need someone extraordinary. Someone who can help us bring people together, one volunteer at a time.
We need you.
Why This Role Matters
Loneliness is silent, but its impact is loud. It affects mental health, physical wellbeing, confidence, and hope. Every day, thousands of people in our city feel invisible — and SUNSHINE exists to change that.
But we cannot do it alone.
Our volunteers will be the heartbeat of everything we do. They will be the smiling faces, the listening ears, the warm voices, the steady hands. They will be the reason someone feels seen again.
And you, as our Head of Volunteering, will make all of that possible.
What You’ll Lead
This is not just a role — it’s a chance to build something meaningful from the ground up.
You will:
Design and launch SUNSHINE’s entire volunteering programme.
Create a culture of positivity, team spirit, and continuous improvement.
Build the systems, processes, and structure that will support volunteers for years to come.
Recruit, onboard, and nurture a diverse community of volunteers — from short‑term helpers to long‑term champions.
Shape the volunteer experience so every person who joins feels valued, supported, and inspired.
Help us bring our mission to life through people who give their time, energy, and heart.
This is a role for someone who loves people, believes in potential, and sees volunteering as a powerful force for change.
Who You Are
You’re someone who:
Lights up when talking about community.
Believes deeply in kindness, connection, and purpose.
Has experience in volunteering, people management, or community building.
Thrives in start‑up environments where creativity and initiative are everything.
Wants to leave a legacy — something that will grow long after you’ve planted the first seeds.
Most importantly, you’re someone who wants to make a difference that truly matters.
Why Join SUNSHINE?
Because this is your chance to:
Build a volunteering programme from scratch.
Shape the culture of a brand‑new charity.
Work alongside passionate, hopeful, determined people.
Know that your work directly helps end loneliness.
Be part of something bigger than all of us.
Your leadership will help someone feel connected again. Your ideas will help someone smile again. Your programme will help someone feel less alone.
We Need You — Now
We are at the beginning of our journey, and volunteers are the lifeline that will help us launch. If you’ve ever wanted to use your skills to create real, lasting change, this is the moment.
If your heart is saying “yes,” then you have a heart of gold and we want to hear from you.

Organisation overview
Sevenoaks Welcomes Refugees is a local charity formed in March 2017. We are a small but growing charity, whose volunteers and supporters have come together to welcome and help support the refugees who have fled the fighting and persecution in Syria, Afghanistan and Ukraine, and are now resettling in our community.
Starting with just one refugee family, we have expanded our efforts over the years and are proud to have supported about 70 families as they settle and rebuild their lives in our community. Currently we support 150 refugees and have over 100 volunteers, of whom 75 provide the service to the refugees. We are completely funded by donations and fundraising.
The role:
To lead SWR’s operational team (‘the VLT’) that helps refugees move from crisis to confidence and citizenship—ensuring every family is supported and nothing important is missed. The team also supports those volunteers assisting the refugees along their path to independence. The VLT is a friendly group of able and energetic people who specialise in different areas of refugee and volunteer support.
What we are looking for:
The VLT is a friendly group of able and energetic people who specialise in different areas of refugee and volunteer support. They need someone who is good at leading teams, who can orchestrate their activities and make sure that nothing important is missed. This also involves being good at working with people and working calmly and methodically through the issues which arise.
What you’ll actually be doing:
● Leading the team. Your role is all about supporting and motivating the team around you, helping it to focus on key issues and, as refugee needs change, adjusting the team and building it to address the emerging needs of our refugee community.
● Operational oversight: This is the operational heart of the role. You ensure, with the team, that issues are tracked and resolved.
● Support to the leads: You’ll support our specialist leads (which are principally, family, data, housing, employment and language). They are likely to be far more expert in their subject areas but you’re their support and sounding board.
● The board liaison: You’ll be the voice of the VLT working with the board Chair. As the VLT Chair you are an important voice in setting operational norms and priorities.
● Liaison with other agencies at the operational level such as the Refugee Council.
Is this for you?
● You can deal with people: You have empathy and good judgement to handle difficult situations for volunteers who care deeply, sorting out problems with them while keeping focused on professional outcomes.
● You’re naturally organized: You can separate out the important from the less important, the urgent and the non-urgent in juggling resources. You can spot the issue that others may have forgotten.
● You have the capacity: This role may take 7 hours per week, often less but on occasion more.
The handover:
Our current chair is stepping down in August 2026. We’d love a successor to start "shadowing" the Volunteer Leadership Team and the chair’s role within it in the late spring or early summer to see how the operational system works to benefit the refugees and meet some of the volunteers who make the services happen.
Why this role matters
Without an effective Chair, small problems can become bigger problems for both the families we support and the volunteers assisting them. You will be the person ensuring operationally that SWR remains a reliable and compassionate support to the refugees, and an excellent place to be a volunteer in. When a refugee or a volunteer reaches out, they are supported by a system that works and people that care.
What will you get:
You will get deep satisfaction and enjoyment from working closely with a deeply dedicated and fun VLT team, as well as the hugely dedicated trustees and wider volunteer membership. You, and your team can see life-changing success stories first-hand, and help shape the future of a lean and highly effective local charity.
We welcome refugees into Sevenoaks District, supporting social integration and economic independence through practical support and access to services.

Volunteers must be patient and non-judgemental in order to work effectively. As a prison volunteer you will:
It is essential for volunteers to support FCW ethos, believe in rehabilitation, be an excellent teamworker, observe personal boundaries, be reliable and patient to ensure cell groups run smoothly, and have record-keeping skills and have at knowledge of tapestry/needlework. .
Volunteers work in prisons around the UK dependant on where groups are based, therefore it is requred that volunteers will be able to travel to the relevant prisons. Travel expenses will be reimbursed by the charity.
Please take some time to read the role description to find put more details about the role and what we offer to our volunteers.
At Fine Cell Work, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where all belong. We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in FCW’s workforce.
These include applicants from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities, LGBTQI+, and male identifying applicants as these are currently under-represented in our volunteers groups.

AFRIL’s Allotment of Refuge is an integrated group of growers and gardeners both with and without lived experience of migration. The Allotment provides a weekly wellbeing space for AFRIL members to come together with members of the broader community and learn about food growing, learn new skills and enjoy a shared lunch. The Allotment also grows crops which are distributed at AFRIL’s Foodbank.
Our volunteers are crucial in supporting AFRIL staff to obtain the best outcomes for our clients, and this role will provide you with an opportunity to see a hands-on outdoor project, learn about growing and gain valuable insight into the immigration system and its many challenges.
We support asylum seekers, refugees and vulnerable migrants to lift themselves out of poverty and rebuild their lives in the heart of our community.
