Youth Work Apprenticeship

Location: Based at a local GMYF Youth Centre in Manchester or Trafford with regular attendance at Ormside Mill Outdoor Residential Centre in Cumbria

Responsible to: Outdoor Education Manager

Contract: Fixed 3-year apprenticeship contract with potential for FT employment on completion of successful apprenticeship.

Hours: 30 hours per week to be worked flexibly, inclusive one day per week university study.

Salary/Grade: £20,982 with the option of an auto enrolement pension

Introduction

Greater Manchester Youth Federation (GMYF) is a long-established charity running vibrant youth centres across Greater Manchester. We are dedicated to raising aspirations and creating opportunities for young people, especially those facing disadvantage. A key part of our offer is the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and our approach champions youth voice, inclusion, building confidence and resilience. We offer outdoor education activities, including residentials at our Ormside Mill Residential Centre in Cumbria.

Purpose of Role:

The Youth Work Apprentice will work alongside professionally qualified youth workers learning the skills and qualities of the youth work profession. The apprentice will attend sessions on a weekly basis as well as committing to a university study day each trimester. A central focus will be to engage and support young people 11 – 18 years to take part in outdoor education activities including the Duke of Edinburgh Award. There will be an expectation for the apprentice to attend residential events, expeditions and wider outdoor activities e.g. canoeing, climbing and hill walking to encourage and support young people taking part in these activities. Apprentices will learn a range of essential youth work skills including mentoring, boundaries, safeguarding and reflective practice which they will utilise in their work with young people, carrying out their roles with enthusiasm, integrity and professionalism.

An overarching skill and ethos of the role will be to build trustful and meaningful relationships with young people for which ongoing training will be provided. Understanding the barriers some young people face and how to overcome these will be a regular feature of the youth worker portfolio of skills. While the core components of youth work skills will be central to the role a significant amount of time will be spent supporting young people to experience and enjoy outdoor activities which is central to our mission of improving the life chances, inclusiveness and resilience of young people.

The role will involve regular travel and overnight stays which will need to be worked flexibly to meet the needs of the charity. A TOIL system is in place which is subject to agreement with line manager.

Key Responsibilities:

Programme Delivery & Development

• Undertake a course of studies at degree level attending university one day per week developing a broad range of skills, knowledge and behaviours to achieve a professionally recognised youth worker Degree Apprenticeship.
• Develop a working knowledge of GMYF’s policies and procedures in line with the requirements of the organisation and to meet the Apprenticeship Standard.
• To have a high regard to and comply with GMYF’s Safeguarding Policy and Procedures and to maintain a strong working knowledge of appropriate safeguarding developments.
• Provide high levels of performance which comply with GMYF’s commitment to young people, particularly those facing disadvantage and wider barriers to participation and achievement.
• Under supervision, work closely with other team members to assist (and as skills levels develop lead) in a range of youth work projects and areas of specialism e.g. outdoor education.
• Plan, coordinate, and support young people aged 11–18, up to 25 with additional needs, to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award, reflecting GMYF’s youth work approach, values and behaviours.
• Develop progressive outdoor learning pathways that support personal development, confidence, teamwork, leadership, and wellbeing.
• Work collaboratively with youth workers to integrate outdoor education into wider youthwork  programmes, targeted interventions, and school partnerships.
• Ensure programmes are inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the needs of young people from diverse backgrounds, including those with ADHD, SEND and other barriers to participation.
• Through personal example promote the behaviours that exemplify GMYF mission and ambition.

Safety, Quality & Compliance

• Ensure youth worker apprenticeship compliance and comply with university policy and procedures throughout the duration of studies. This will include working to GMYF professional guidance and licensing requirements as directed by supervising staff.
• Adhere to relevant legislation, guidance, and licensing requirements as directed by supervising staff.
• Read, understand and comply with risk assessments, operating procedures, and emergency action plans as required.
• Contribute to and support the organisation’s monitoring and self-evaluation process.

Administration & Organisation

• Maintain all academic and administrative duties aligned with the youth worker degree apprenticeship.
• Keep accurate and up-to-date records as required by line manager consistent with GDPR.
• Contribute to the promotion and marketing of GMYF to schools, youth groups, and partners.

Representation & Partnership Working

• Develop and maintain a professional partnership with the youth worker degree apprenticeship training provider, schools, DofE, funders, and outdoor sector regulator bodies.
• Represent GMYF within the youth work and outdoor education sectors at meetings and events.
• Advocate for the value of outdoor learning in supporting young people’s wellbeing, mental health, and personal development.
• Support GMYF’s strategic objectives and values through professional leadership, collaboration, and celebration of success.

Person Specification

Essential

• L2 qualification in Maths and English
• L3 qualification e.g. Youth Work, Sports Leader or similar (A’ Levels) *

This is a pivotal role, supporting the co-ordination and administration of our income, fundraising activity, financial management, cost efficiency, impact data, and funding reporting. Through high-quality assessments, personalised move-on planning and creative problem-solving, you’ll support clients to secure safe, appropriate accommodation and take their next steps towards independence.

Resettlement is not just about finding a room. It’s about widening options, challenging barriers and advocating for people who may struggle to access housing on their own. You’ll build strong relationships with housing providers, the private rented sector and pathway services, navigating local connection rules and housing systems with confidence and persistence.

One of two Outreach and Project Workers pivotal to the delivery of an exciting new Women at Risk (WaR) project which will support women at risk of rough sleeping, homelessness and exploitation. We are looking for a Housing Advice Worker who is passionate about supporting young people experiencing homelessness to transition into safe and secure housing.

The ideal candidate will work proactively and enthusiastically, both independently and as part of a team. They will have experience working in a busy, often fast-paced environment and be confident in assessing individual needs and identifying appropriate housing pathways. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of housing and homelessness legislation, along with a solid insight into the reasons individuals experience homelessness. They will be able to effectively support young people presenting with a wide range of needs and barriers.

We are seeking a male flexible, reliable, and enthusiastic Sessional Worker to support the delivery of services for Young Carers aged 5-16. Due to an increase in trips and off-site activities, and to ensure we provide appropriate support for all young people- particularly our male Young Carers - we are particularly seeking a male sessional worker to join the team. The role involves two key parts. The first is helping to deliver engaging, age-appropriate activities that promote wellbeing, reduce isolation, and give Young Carers a break from their responsibilities. The second is supporting with outreach to local schools, colleges, community settings and professionals to identify and engage Young Carers. 

About The Role: 

You will work across two key age groups- 5-11 and 12–16 - delivering and supervising activities, supporting events and trips, and providing behavioural management where needed. You will deliver awareness training sessions, run stalls and aim to identify and engage Young Carers in the community. You will also help ensure young Carers feel heard, included, and supported as they navigate the challenges of their caring roles. We are particularly looking for a male sessional worker who is available for our upcoming residential trip to the Young Carers Festival on the 26th – 28th June and a day trip to Southend-On-Sea on the 6th June.  This is a sessional role, therefore hours are not guaranteed but will be offered based on project need.

The Charity and Our Vision.  

For over 15 years, Scotty's Little Soldiers has been supporting children and young people who have been bereaved of a parent who served in the British Armed Forces.  We are about to embark on an exciting journey which will see the charity evolve to support anyone affected by a military-connected bereavement and ultimately empower a community of more than 25,000 bereaved individuals and their families by 2035. 

Founded in 2010 by Nikki Scott following the death of her husband, Corporal Lee Scott, the charity currently offers a unique blend of emotional, practical, and educational support to over 750 young people.

Role Mission. 

To be an integral part of the delivery of Scotty’s new navigating entitlements casework (START) Programme, a single point of contact service designed to support anyone affected by military-connected bereavement. 

This is a hands-on, and vital role within a brand new team. You’ll be the first step in ensuring that everyone in the bereaved military community receives compassionate, personalised, and well-coordinated support. 

The key responsibilities of this role are:  

Service Design & Delivery  

Working closely with the Head of START, contribute to the planning and rollout of the START Programme  

In many cases be the first port of call for Scotty’s families, and be a welcoming and inclusive contact for all those families

Implement the new service model, workflows, triage process and beneficiary journey 

Ensure the service you deliver is trauma-informed, inclusive, and responsive to beneficiary feedback 

Manage your own caseload with support from Head of START programme 

Team Leadership & Development  

Once your experience has grown, provide peer support to any further caseworkers joining the team in 2027 and beyond (depending on demand) 

Ensure an ongoing focus on your own learning and development, always creating space for reflective practice  

Ensure that you live the culture that reflects The Scotty’s Way and encourages your own personal growth

 Be an active part of the wider Families team contributing to Daily Huddles and team plans and objectives 

Collaboration & Partnership  

Build and maintain, alongside the Head of START strong referral pathways with external organisations (military & non-military charities, NHS, social care) 

Build your expertise on navigating entitlements for the bereaved community to ensure that Scotty’s families receive the best possible support. 

Work collaboratively with other Programme teams to ensure consistency, shared learning & efficient internal referrals 

Monitoring & Evaluation  

Ensure that you are reporting consistently on beneficiary engagement, support outcomes, and follow-up actions 

Work with your direct support to use evidence and insights gathered to adapt and improve the service over time 

Ensure CRM records are complete, accurate, so they can be used to inform delivery decisions  

Contribution to Charity-Wide Goals  

Feed into cross-functional projects including Outreach, Fundraising, and Strategy 

Act as a representative of Scotty’s at sector events or external meetings where appropriate 

Support content development by sharing anonymised stories, insights, and themes  

The 30-day goals for this role are: 

Built a deep understanding of Scotty’s mission, our audience, the services we provide, and strategic direction. 

Worked closely with the Head of START and other programme Heads to understand the history of Scotty’s helping families navigate entitlements, including reviewing current and recent cases.  

Become familiar with the key stakeholders, partners and organisations (including statutory, charitable and others) for casework in the START Programme.  

The 60-day goals for this role are: 

Built confidence and knowledge around the START programme aims and objectives, and the needs of Scotty families.  

Supported the Head of START to implement the new casework programme and beneficiary journeys.   

Built understanding of the processes that are in place to monitor the outcomes and impact of the new START Programme. 

Contributed to the design of a light CRM for initial use in START casework.   

Supported the development of and started to build understanding of the necessary processes and procedures for casework including safeguarding, triage, wait time limits etc.   

Started the training plan for new START caseworkers.  

The 90-day goals for this role are: 

Supported the launch of the new START Programme alongside Scotty’s team members.   

Welcomed the first families to Casework following the processes and framework that the Head of START has implemented.   

Worked with the Head of START to set a clear plan for the remainder of 2026 and beyond for the START programme, establishing it as a quality Scotty’s service for families.  

Starting to provide outcomes and data that enable the programme’s outcomes to be evidenced. 

About You: 

Must-Have 

Experience in service delivery, casework, and personalised support services 

Ability to work independently and manage a busy, varied caseload 

A compassionate and person-centred approach to casework 

Excellent organisational and communication skills 

A clear understanding of safeguarding vulnerable adults 

Nice-to-Have  

Familiarity with military family life or bereavement support 

Background in information, advice and guidance within the charity or statutory sector 

An understanding of the importance of service co-design with users or lived experience groups 

Additional Information

The role will require some evening or weekend work

Enhanced DBS check required

Travel will be required to events and team training days
