Role Summary
As the Director of Research and Public Affairs you lead a team working across the full range of research work (including commissioning, grant-making and in-house research) and public affairs work (including policy analysis, advocacy work and mobilising our activists). You also contribute to the charity’s strategies, leadership and governance as a member of the Executive Team. Ultimately, your role is to generate new knowledge; and communicate knowledge, ideas and emotions to change hearts and minds, creating tangible reductions in alcohol harm across the UK.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Leadership, strategy & planning
1. Lead the research and public affairs functions at Alcohol Change UK.
2. Produce and deliver plans across our research and public affairs work programmes that are ambitious for change (impact), realistic given our resources, and consistent with our strategy, our other work programmes, and our values.
3. Set budgets, tightly control costs and identify opportunities for making savings, growing income and making the case for investment.
4. Appropriately monitor and evaluate our research and public affairs work with a view to knowing, growing and showing the impact we make.
Research
5. Work closely with the CEO, Policy and Research Manager, R&P sub-committee and Wales Office to determine and oversee the charity’s programme of commissioned research, research grants, and in-house research.
6. Ensure that all research is designed with impact-in-mind and, once complete, that it delivers on that impact through active and ongoing communication of the findings to the right audiences with the right messages through the right channels.
7. Lead the research function to be the central hub for the charity on the topic of alcohol harm and its solutions, staying on top of new research.
8. Influence the research spending of other agencies (e.g. NIHR) with a view to maximising funding into alcohol research in general.
Public Affairs
9. Lead and manage the charity’s public affairs activity, deploying the CEO, Research & Policy Officer and other staff as a team.
10. Lead our work with external alliances, such as the Alcohol Health Alliance and the Alcohol and Families Alliance, and on the APPG on Alcohol Harm.
11. Develop excellent relationships with Parliamentarians, civil servants, charities and other important institutional actors in our field.
12. Build Campaigner journeys for our engagement audience to best mobilise them to help us with our influencing work.
13. Lead on the commissioning and management of any external public affairs agencies, parliamentary monitoring services and similar suppliers.
14. Ensure our policy positions are kept up-to-date, based on emerging evidence and contemporary thinking, and consistent with our principles.
15. Work closely with the Director of Engagement and Fundraising to effectively mobilise and deploy our activists, Community Champions and other supporters so they (i) make a difference, (ii) become better informed over time, and (iii) remain motivated to campaign for our cause.
16. Work closely with the Director of Marketing and Communications to influence all forms of media to better support our desired outcomes.
Team Leadership and Management
17. Lead and manage the research and public affairs team(s), ensuring excellent line management.
18. Lead the process of recruiting and inducting new team members, as appropriate.
19. Proactively develop your own skills and experience as well as those of staff within your team.
Cross-organisational Role
20. Act as a spokesperson for the charity at high profile events and across media, including radio and TV.
21. Be an active and positive member of the charity’s Executive Team.
22. Work with colleagues across the charity to support their work and to act as ‘one team’.
23. Work particularly closely with colleagues in the Wales office, optimising opportunities for joint working.
24. Contribute actively and positively to the development of charity-wide strategies and activity.
Other Duties
25. Continually develop your knowledge of alcohol harm and solutions to it.
26. Act as a positive ambassador for Alcohol Change UK at all times.
27. Know, embrace and actively uphold the values of Alcohol Change UK at all times.

About the role
As our Senior Finance & Operations Officer, you will be at the heart of our organisation’s success. Working closely with the Director, Finance and Operations, you will help to manage financial processes, streamline operations, and ensure both our UK and EU teams are properly resourced to drive our mission forward. You will interact daily with a broad range of stakeholders in the UK and the EU including senior level staff, external consultants and suppliers in the while also working closely with Finance, HR & IT colleagues in the US.
Key responsibilities
Financial Management (30%)
- Support on day-to-day financial activities including financial reporting, accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Develop and implement best practices to optimise operational efficiency and effectiveness.
- Collaborate with the team to develop and monitor project budgets.
- Support decision-making through insightful financial analysis.
Operational Support (40%)
- Be the first point of contact for all enquiries from the campaigns and fundraising teams in the UK and EU.
Contracts Lifecycle Management (30%)
- Oversee the lifecycle of all supplier contracts: creation, submission and signing. (Legal contract knowledge is not required.)
About you
You will be a confident, dynamic individual with a can-do attitude who has a proven track record of juggling competing priorities and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. The role is varied and has a significant financial element so strong numeracy skills, a solid knowledge of financial management principles paired with good communications skills are important. This role
In this role, you will:

- Provide editorial support and copywriting expertise to other teams so that accurate copy is produced in line with brand image and protocols
- Work collaboratively with other teams, creating strong links between other programmes and projects to ensure the successful implementation of marketing and communication campaigns

- Work with our PR consultant to distribute press releases and external content
- Monitor the media and wide external environment to identify opportunities for Picker to raise its media profile
- Support and implement a variety of internal communications to enhance employee engagement and retention

About You

Ocean Project Officer (Plastics and Marine Wildlife Campaigns)
EIA is seeking an Oceans Project Officer (Plastic and Marine Wildlife Campaigns) to join a fast-paced team that is currently spilt into two programmes – marine wildlife and plastics. The role is spilt approx. 80% on the plastics programme and 20% on marine wildlife. The work covers issues from the negotiations towards a new plastics treaty to investigations into the plastic waste and fish maw trades, as well as national and regional policy and advocacy. The work of the team is international and technical in scope and brings in campaigning and legal experts as well as working closely with other teams, such as intelligence and investigations.
Role purpose:
This role will provide support to ensure efficient implementation of the Ocean campaign strategies. The position is dynamic and requires coordination across both internal teams and external partners, as well as a strong grasp on financial and administrative skills. The role will have responsibility for supporting all of the varied administrative, financial and project management needs for implementation of the campaigns.
About you:
The ideal candidate will have experience of financial and grant management and excellent organisational and time management skills, ideally with some project management experience. Good oral and written communication skills, including knowledge and experience of key social media platforms is essential. An ability to prepare accurate, relevant and clearly presented financial and narrative reports as well we the ability to articulate financial concepts is also required.

This varied role deals with every aspect of a patient’s life that supports better outcomes: welfare benefits, practical, emotional and social support. As well as directly supporting patients, you will raise awareness of the wide range of local and national resources available to kidney patients, and build strong relationships with kidney patients, professionals, and other stakeholder groups in the region.
Based at home (laptop and mobile phone provided), you will be expected to travel independently across Liverpool and the Wirral area and manage your own caseload with the support of your line manager and other members of our national friendly, committed team.

his individual will be able to evidence high-level strategic thinking and be comfortable delivering campaigns when required. War Child UK run multiple large scale appeals, events and initiatives across the year targeting a diverse range of audiences.
Some of the key responsibilities:
- Leading on strategically planned engagement and growth across all our communications audiences, channels and initiatives. Including defined communications moments, brand engagement, UK advocacy communications and cross departmental campaigns.
- Own War Child UK’s voice and brand, providing consistency in tone and messaging across all channels and ensuring that our voice and brand is engaging to our wide range of audiences
- Lead on creating and assessing opportunities for cross departmental communications campaigns to increase fundraising and/or brand awareness, including overarching narratives and key campaigns each year
- To provide first-rate line management to the Communications & Content team and line manage the Marketing Lead and PR Manager. You will model excellence in management that will result in the team thriving in their roles, with high standards of performance and behavior, and team members that are developed to achieve their best, whilst maintaining strong wellbeing. As a Head of, you will model these high standards of performance and behavior to support the Fundraising Engagement Director and other functions across War Child UK.
- Use your experience to provide insight and recommendations to the Fundraising Engagement Director and War Child UK CEO when communications decisions are needed
- In most instances you will be accountable for the successful delivery of campaigns led by others in your team, in some instances – including cross departmental communications campaigns - you will lead on end to end delivery
You will be:
- Strategic, with experience of designing and delivering communications strategies across a wide portfolio
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a high degree of emotional intelligence to deal with a variety and internal and external stakeholders and the ability to build effective working relationships at all levels.
- A diverse knowledge of communications delivery, with the ability to transfer this knowledge and adapt your experience to different audiences, objectives and campaigns
- Experience of team resource and people management and able to delegate tasks in a clear and concise manner.
- A clear understanding of the importance of brand behaviour and having a strong tone of voice. You are able to use this to instil ways of working across an organisation to achieve success
- Able to set up and manage a successful press function
- Experience of policy and advocacy initiatives, delivering public facing advocacy campaigns and getting traction in the media
- Experience of humanitarian emergencies and managing a media responses to work for a UK market.
