About Compassion in Dying and the information line service

At Compassion in Dying, we want people to be in control of their end-of-life decisions because no one is better to make them. We support people to make informed decisions, start honest conversations about death and dying with loved ones, and record and revisit their wishes whenever they want to.

Many people tell us they want to be in charge of decisions about their care and treatment, but struggle to access clear information or encounter reluctance to have open conversations about death and dying. Our nurse-led information line exists to change that. We enable people to plan ahead and to be in control of their end-of-life decisions, including in situations where they may no longer be able to make decisions for themselves.

Demand for the service consistently exceeds capacity. We are therefore expanding our clinical team and are looking for two experienced nurses to provide verbal and written information and support that is accurate, clear and practical.

This is an exciting opportunity for a nurse with experience in palliative care and excellent communication skills, able to convey complex information in a straightforward and sensitive way by phone and email. This new permanent role offers the opportunity to contribute to the growth of an expanding information service that delivers direct support and drives improvements in practice.·

Role purpose

·Respond to enquiries to Compassion in Dying’s information service, using clinical knowledge to provide appropriate information and support.

·Promote patient choice and autonomy by enabling people to make informed decisions about their care and treatment, now and in the future, or to advocate for someone close to them.

·Provide specialist information on advance care planning, supporting people to plan ahead and record their wishes for end-of-life care and treatment.

·Contribute to the development of information resources for the public and professionals.

Key responsibilities

Information service

·Respond promptly to enquiries to Compassion in Dying’s information line by phone, email and letter.

·Provide clear, accurate information in plain English.

·Support people to complete advance care planning documents, including Advance Decisions, Advance Statements and with queries about Lasting Powers of Attorney for Health and Welfare.

·Equip people with an understanding of the law and best practice to enable them to advocate for themselves or loved ones in best-interest decision-making meetings.

·Manage casework, including arranging and responding to follow-up calls and emails for people requiring ongoing support.

·Listen carefully to people’s experiences, ensuring they feel heard, understood and acknowledged.

·Support people to feel confident asking relevant questions and discussing care options with health professionals, or doing so on behalf of someone who lacks capacity.

·Be comfortable discussing end-of-life issues and respond to enquiries in a professional and sensitive manner.

·Maintain awareness of other organisations’ services and sources of support.

·Share learning from the people we support across the organisation, including with policy, media, and marketing and fundraising teams.

THE CHARITY

Suicide is the leading cause of death of men under 35 and three quarters of those who die by suicide are men. James’ Place exists to save the lives of men in suicidal crisis through delivering clinical services. We are a charity currently offering free, life-saving therapy to suicidal men at our centres in Liverpool, London and Newcastle.

James’ Place was set up by Clare Milford Haven and Nick Wentworth-Stanley in 2008 after their twenty-one-year-old son, James, died by suicide ten days after a minor operation. James had no history of mental illness or depression and had sought urgent help for anxiety and suicidal thoughts but didn’t find it.   

James' Place was set up to make the experience of finding help as easy as possible. We offer men who are experiencing a suicidal crisis a brief, intensive, therapeutic intervention in a safe environment. Men who walk through the door at James’ Place will be in a space where they feel valued and respected.  We provide a calm and peaceful environment both inside the centres and in our outside spaces, accessible to men who visit us as well as their friends and families. We have so far treated over 4,300 men who might otherwise have been unable to access the support they desperately need.

In early 2026 we will be opening our fourth centre in Birmingham. Our new centre in Birmingham will be there to support suicidal men living in the West Midlands.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are looking to recruit Suicide Prevention Therapists to support men in suicidal crisis at our new pilot service in St Helens. This role is part of an exciting new initiative for our charity.

As a Suicide Prevention Therapist, you will be an experienced mental health professional or therapist with demonstrable interest in suicide prevention. You will support men who are experiencing a suicidal crisis and their supporter(s), delivering our unique intervention and co-producing effective safety plans to maintain their safety.

The successful candidate will join an experienced and supportive team, gradually building a caseload to assist men in suicidal crisis as we expand our referral partnerships and raise awareness in St Helens. Training and support will be provided by the Head of Centre and Senior Therapist in Liverpool, as well as the wider James’ Place team.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical

· Conduct initial Welcome Assessments with men in a suicidal crisis, assessing risk and the suitability of the James’ Place intervention and co-producing effective safety plans

· Deliver our therapeutic intervention, building trust and exploring the reasons for crisis

· Use the Lay Your Cards on the Table intervention to encourage men to talk about and explore their feelings, attitudes and behaviours and develop positive coping strategies

· Take full clinical responsibility of the men under James’ Place care, as a member of the clinical team and in consultation with Senior Suicide Prevention Therapist and Head of Centre when needed

· Escalate care to appropriate services when necessary, including emergency services and secondary mental health teams

· Deliver one-off guidance sessions to supporters of men under the James’ Place care

· Work collaboratively with other professionals to coordinate comprehensive care

· Demonstrate self-awareness and regularly dedicate time and space, inside and outside of work, to keeping yourself well

· Undergo clinical supervision with a qualified supervisor to reflect on clinical work and raise any issues or concerns arising from work

· Remain up to date with developments in law, theories and research

· Engage in peer support sessions, caseload discussions and reflective practice with the team

· Contribute to an environment in which confidentiality, privacy and dignity are respected and be clear with clients about limits of confidentiality

· Maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards

· Complete session notes in a timely and effective manner

· Participate in continuous professional development and engage in training provided both internally and externally

· Support the Clinical Administration team as and when necessary

Outreach and Engagement

· Support the local management team to increase contact with local community organisations able to refer to us or offer move on support for men completing our intervention

· Support the fundraising team to bring potential supporters into our building and showcase our work, including the facilitation of events

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The role requires someone with a relevant qualification who can confidently support men experiencing a suicidal crisis. You will need to be able to effectively conduct risk assessments and deliver our clinically proven therapeutic intervention to ensure client safety. Strong therapeutic communication, the ability to work autonomously and teamwork skills are also essential to this role, as well as the ability to build trust and hope.

Essential

Qualification(s)

· A Core Profession such as Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist or Social Worker, counselling or practitioner psychologist registered with NMC, HCPC, or Social Work England

or

· Accreditation as a psychological therapist, psychotherapist, or counsellor registered with BACP, UKCP, BABCP or equivalent, or have completed training and awaiting accreditation

You must hold a relevant qualification to be considered for this role.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

· Demonstrable experience working with adults experiencing acute psychological distress

· Demonstrable knowledge of social and other factors which could lead to suicidal thinking and actions

· Demonstrable knowledge of the factors contributing to male suicide

· Evidence of being able to deliver a therapeutic session and work in a therapeutic environment

What you will do:

As a large organisation, we need Trustees who can invest a suitable amount of time, on a flexible basis, each month. As a guide, a Trustee could be investing around 5 hours a month to RESPONSE (to include the formal board meetings, which take place bi-monthly). About Beyond Reflections

Beyond Reflections is a UK charity providing dedicated mental-wellbeing support to Trans+ people, as well as to their families,

friends, and allies. We offer a combination of group support, one-to-one services, and therapeutic interventions delivered by experienced case workers, counsellors, and therapists.

Our work spans both online and in-person settings, ensuring support is accessible, confidential, and rooted in compassion.

From facilitated support groups and tailored counselling to mentoring, safe social spaces, and specialist guidance, we aim to meet people where they are and provide the right help at the right time.

We play a wider role in strengthening inclusion across society. Our training and development programmes, which have been delivered to organisations such as the CPS, Hampshire Police, B&Q, and the University of Southampton, focus on Trans+ awareness, allyship, leadership coaching, conflict resolution, and policy development. All income from this work goes directly into our hardship fund, enabling us to support those who would otherwise be unable to access help.

Volunteers are an essential part of our organisation. They contribute across support services, events, administration, and governance, bringing a wide range of lived experiences and skills. We provide a supportive environment for volunteers to grow, develop, and contribute to meaningful change.

Job Description

The Chief Executive will provide clear, compassionate, and forward-looking leadership that strengthens Beyond Reflections’ impact and ensures our services remain safe, accessible, and responsive to the needs of the Trans+ community. They will translate the Board’s vision into organisational strategy, oversee effective operations, and build a culture rooted in our values of respect, inclusion, and empowerment. They will be responsible for guiding the charity through a period of growth in response to increasing demand. This includes developing partnerships across the charity and public sectors, driving financial sustainability, supporting staff and volunteers, and ensuring our services maintain the highest standards of quality and safeguarding.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Organisational Development

● Lead the delivery of the charity’s strategic plan, ensuring the organisation remains responsive to the needs of the Trans+ community.

● Identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and collaboration across the sector.

● Translate strategic priorities into clear operational objectives and measurable outcomes.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

● Act as the primary link between the Board of Trustees and the organisation, ensuring clear communication and timely implementation of Board decisions.

● Ensure full compliance with charity law, safeguarding requirements, quality standards, and regulatory obligations.

● Provide clear, accurate reporting to the Board to support effective governance and decision-making.

● Maintain strong organisational risk management and business continuity processes.

Operational Leadership & Service Delivery

● Oversee high-quality delivery of all services, including support groups, counselling, therapy, mentoring, training, and volunteering programmes.

● Lead and support the senior management team (e.g., Operations, Therapeutic, and Fundraising leads) to ensure effective operational oversight.

● Promote continuous improvement, data-informed decision-making, and consistent service standards across online and in-person provision.

People, Culture & Wellbeing

● Foster an inclusive, trauma-informed, and person-centred organisational culture that reflects the charity’s values.

● Recruit, lead, and develop staff, ensuring strong performance and wellbeing.

● Support and integrate volunteers across service delivery, promoting engagement, recognition, and effective practice.

External Relations & Partnerships

● Act as an ambassador for Beyond Reflections, representing the charity to funders, partners, policymakers, statutory bodies, and the media.

● Build strategic partnerships, including collaboration with broader LGBTQIA+ organisations and health/social care providers.

● Advocate for Trans+ people, contributing to policy, awareness, and sector development.

● Ensure member voices inform organisational decisions and strategic direction.

Finance, Fundraising & Sustainability

● Lead financial planning, budgeting, and stewardship to ensure sustainability and value for money.

● Grow diversified income streams, including unrestricted funding, grants, training revenue, and corporate partnerships.

● Maintain relationships with funders, commissioners, donors, and commercial partners.

Essential Desirable

Significant senior leadership experience, preferably in the charity, social care, or mental health sectors.

Lived experience as a trans, non-binary, or gender-diverse person, or personal experience connected to the Trans+ community.

Deep understanding of issues facing trans+ (gender-diverse) communities, or lived experience.

Experience in designing or delivering training programmes for organisations.

Proven track record in strategic planning, financial management, and fundraising.

Experience of mental health or therapeutic service delivery.

People-management skills: experience managing teams, developing staff, and supporting volunteers.

Network of relationships in the LGBTQIA+ sector, statutory bodies, or philanthropic funding landscape.

Excellent communication and stakeholder-engagement skills, including public speaking, advocacy, and partnership building.

Experience scaling organisations, diversifying income, or developing trading/social enterprise models.

Strong governance knowledge and experience working with or reporting to a Board of Trustees.

Understanding of digital transformation and digital service delivery.

Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity, inclusion, and trauma-informed practice.

Experience overseeing remote, hybrid or multi-site teams.

Demonstrated ability to lead in emotionally complex environments and maintain professional boundaries.

Familiarity with commissioning processes and local authority partnership models.

Interviews

First-round interviews will take place in the week commencing 9th February 2026 and will take place online. Second-round interviews will take place w/c 16th February, where you will be asked to give a presentations to Trustees. If you are successful through these stages, you will be invited to the BR offices during the week of 23rd February.
