About the Role

As a Support Worker in a  Children’s Home, you will provide direct support and care for our young people, who have complex emotional and mental health difficulties (such as trauma and loss),and can struggle to regulate their emotions. Working within a therapeutic framework, you will develop a direct programme of work aimed at developing authentic relationships with our children and young people (aged between 12 and17 years old), you will also have responsibility for making sure our those in our care are safe, providing support, liaison with other external professionals and completion of support documents to record information.

Dravet Syndrome is a rare, life-long and life-limiting form of epilepsy that affects approximately one in every 15,000 people in the UK (around 2-4,000 people in total). It is a complex epilepsy syndrome so as well as severe, difficult-to-control seizures, people with Dravet Syndrome live with intellectual disability and a spectrum of associated difficulties including with speech and language, mobility, behaviours, eating and sleep. Founded in 2008 by a group of parents seeking support and information, DSUK has grown significantly over the past 17 years. Today, DSUK supports nearly 600 registered families across the UK and reaches over 2000 people in total, including parents and carers, siblings and bereaved families. As an organisation they deliver a range of impactful services aimed at improving the lives of beneficiaries through family support, professional education and medical research.

In the 1980s, high unemployment and steep inflation was contributing to a shocking rise in youth homelessness across London. Thousands of young people were sleeping rough every night, with many areas notoriously dubbed “cardboard cities” due to the visible rise in street homelessness. The Role

As a Recruitment Coordinator, you will play a key role in delivering a safe, efficient and compliant recruitment service across the charity. Working closely with the Recruitment Lead and Recruitment Administrator, you will coordinate recruitment activity, support safer recruitment checks, act as a key contact for the ATS and contribute to continuous improvement across recruitment processes.

Key tasks include:

About the role

We are seeking a senior health and safety leader to partner with the E&F Executive Director and Senior Leadership Team, providing independent oversight and assurance across a diverse, high-profile environment.

You will assure health and safety performance across more than 100 buildings ranging in age from the 1780’s to the current day, spanning five central London campuses, including facilities embedded within major NHS Trusts and a substantial student residences portfolio.

This is a senior individual contributor role with dual reporting to the Executive Director and Senior Director of Strategy & Performance. It is designed for a leader who operates credibly at executive level, able to influence direction, challenge constructively, and bring clarity and sound judgement to complex and often ambiguous risk landscapes.

This role does not hold operational responsibility for delivery. Your impact will come from setting expectations, testing performance, and ensuring that risks are understood, owned, and acted upon at the right level. Success will depend on your ability to maintain independence, hold senior stakeholders to account, and build confidence in the directorate’s assurance approach over time.

You will bring significant experience from a large, multi-site or similarly complex organisation, with a track record of operating beyond operational management into strategic oversight and governance.

This role will suit someone who is self-directed, comfortable with ambiguity, and confident in maintaining their position when influencing becomes challenging. A visible on-campus presence, typically 3-4 days per week, is essential to engage effectively with senior leaders and operational teams.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

1. Competence to act as a senior health and safety professional under Regulation 7 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations.
2. A recognised health and safety qualification at Level 6 or above, or equivalent professional experience, with commitment to ongoing CPD.
3. Experience providing health and safety leadership and oversight at enterprise level within a multi-site organisation, with evidence of improving risk management.
4. Experience providing executive-level H&S advice to senior leaders and/or boards within multifaceted organisations.
5. Experience establishing health and safety management systems, including risk registers, governance arrangements, audit programmes and performance reporting.
6. Ability to operate effectively in ambiguity and confidently challenge senior leaders on health and safety matters while maintaining constructive working relationships.
7. Experience leading health and safety audits and reviews, with the ability to interpret findings, identify systemic issues and drive improvement through influence.
8. Strong written communication skills to produce clear, high-quality reports, with experience presenting confidently to senior stakeholders.

Desirable criteria

1. Experience working within asset-intensive, safety-critical or highly regulated environments.
2. Experience working with formal health and safety management systems or equivalent governance frameworks.

This position combines hands‑on technical support with essential administrative coordination, making it ideal for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, helping others, and keeping systems running smoothly.

You’ll manage communication tools such as phone systems, mobile devices, and business collaboration platforms, while maintaining clear and helpful IT knowledge resources for staff. The role includes routine checks of meeting‑room equipment, overseeing printers and peripherals, and supporting the starters–leavers–movers process to ensure colleagues have the right access from day one. You’ll also help track security issues, coordinate penetration testing, and promote good IT security practices across the organisation. Regular liaison with our managed service provider and occasional visits to our Trading site are part of the rhythm of the job.

This maternity cover post will have two key focus areas

- Maintaining key components of the befriender programme, including regular communications and meeting with Befrienders, driving recruitment opportunities, supporting innovation in Befriending and troubleshooting in partnership with volunteers.

- Deliver a fixed timeline project focused on developing the Befriender programme.

Responsibilities

Best practice in peer support and befriender programmes

• Manage the direction and growth of the Befriender programme
• Work with the Development Leads and Community Development Officers to create plans for regions to support existing Befrienders and grow the peer support offer across the UK

· To engage, inspire and support existing Sands befrienders, providing a positive volunteer experience from recruitment to saying goodbye

• Be the point of contact for Befriender safeguarding issues. Be proactive in addressing and be an escalation point for challenges, risks and safeguarding issues.

• Practice and support excellent standards in all aspects of inclusion and diversity, particularly in reaching marginalised groups in recruitment and enabling volunteers to provide inclusive support spaces. 
• Lead on development of processes, guidance and resources, ensuring good governance and risk management of the Befriender Programme
• Work with the Volunteering Coordinator to ensure delivery of key processes, process development and improvement to enhance the volunteer experience. 

· To identify learning and development opportunities for befrienders and create a culture of continued learning for all Befrienders

Develop and innovate

• Be an opportunity spotter, picking up innovation opportunities to grow and develop the Befriender programme, alongside relevant Sands’ staff teams. 

• Manage short- and long-term projects and where appropriate join cross organisational working groups to represent the Community and Volunteering Team. Including projects that may have budgets.

• Advocate the voices and needs of Befrienders, bringing in knowledge and feedback to enable good decision making and volunteer participation in new ways of working

• Through supporting approaches to recruitment and partnerships, ensure that individuals with a wide range of bereavement experiences are at the heart of Sands’ volunteering 

· Build a data driven understanding of gaps in service and representation, and make promotion and recruitment decisions to support growth for under-represented towns/regions/groups

· Support continuous improvement and accurate delivery of processes in the welcome journey for new befrienders, including in recruitment, on-boarding and off-boarding processes in partnership with the Volunteer Coordinator

• Work with the Bereavement Support Services Team (BSS) to ensure collaboration across the Befriender programme and national BSS support groups and ensure the Befriender programme continues to be rooted in trauma-informed practice.
• Work with the Training Team to ensure that training and learning experiences for Befrienders are up to date, relevant and accessible.

• Work with the Philanthropy and Partnerships team and the Head of Community and Volunteering to maximise compelling cases for support, storytelling and funding opportunities at a national and local level.
