Job Title: Housing Independent Gender Violence Advocate (Housing IGVA)

Location: The GAIA Centre (Lambeth, London)
Salary: £29,701.36 per annum (Inclusive of London Weighting, which may not be applicable depending on your home location and any agreed permanent homeworking arrangement)
Contract type: Full time, Permanent

Hours: 37.5 hours per week. The working pattern is 9am – 5pm Monday – Friday. Occasional late early shifts: 8am-4pm or late shifts: 1pm – 6pm on a rota basis to cover duty (approximately 2-3 days a month). Flexibility on how the hours is spread across the week within these times.

The Housing Independent Gender Violence Advocate (IGVA) will be embedded within borough housing teams to facilitate the dual working that will ensure that survivors’ safety and housing needs are met. This includes:

· Close working relationships with Housing colleagues 

· Provision of specialist knowledge relating to DA for Housing Officers and Homelessness Teams to draw on 

· Specialist support for survivors at the moment of crisis 

· Provision of advocacy; supporting survivors to access safe accommodation 

· Ongoing support from the IGVA from wider DA service, including access to group clinical supervision, casework management meetings, reflective practice sessions, one-to-one supervision from service manager 

The Housing IGVA will work closely with victims of gender-based violence from the point of crisis, to provide high quality independent advocacy and support to survivors of gender-based violence at the highest risk and their children. The role will be part of increasing the ability of partner agencies to recognise, reject and respond appropriately and safely to all forms of gender-based violence (including domestic violence, sexual, financial and emotional abuse, female genital mutilation, forced marriage and honour-based violence).

The job involves working within a multi-agency framework consisting of the MARAC and local partnership protocols and procedures that prioritise the safety of survivors. The job involves informing survivors of the full range of civil, criminal, housing and practical options that might increase their safety. The post holder will empower survivors by providing them with emotional, practical and personal welfare support especially around complex housing needs.

The job involves ensuring that women are provided with a safe, supportive and welcoming environment, enabling them to access their rights, make decisions and increase their life options.

This post is restricted to women due to the nature of the role. The Occupational Requirement under Schedule 9 (part 1) of the Equality Act 2010 applies.

You will provide clinical direction and maintain oversight of elop’s counselling services, bringing understanding and experience of delivering trauma-informed approaches to support the emotional health and psychological wellbeing of LGBTQ+ people.

You will oversee and contribute to clinical operational responsibilities, service coordination and delivery, ensuring a professional, safe, smooth running, efficient and well managed service is maintained.   You will work alongside the senior leadership team across both strategic and clinical operational levels ensuring lead responsibilities for our counselling teams and services. Working collaboratively with the senior leadership team, implementing clinical delivery decisions, ensuring the counselling service effectively maintains ethical and professional standards of practice and communication across key staff, other agencies and service users. 

You will proactively contribute to building a robust and compelling evidence base that continues to demonstrate impact, improved wellbeing, and increased resilience, and have a key role in monitoring, evaluation, and supporting the wider counselling team with reporting and using data to drive operations, and evidence-based best practice. 

Your role will also include overseeing referrals and allocation of clients; undertaking client assessments; providing role-management, and clinical support and supervision to trainee and sessional counsellors; line-management of key service personnel; some clinical support work with more complex or acute needs clients; recruiting, inducting and training key staff and volunteers; and liaising with the clinical supervision team.

Our Seeking Sanctuary project is a Wales-based initiative delivering innovative housing solutions and community-led support for people seeking sanctuary. We combine community hosting, tenancy-based housing, and advocacy to help build a Nation of Sanctuary. 

About the role 

Reporting directly to the Sanctuary Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day delivery of our accommodation pathways, ensuring the best possible outcomes for destitute migrants and newly granted refugees. 

This is a dynamic, frontline casework role that spans three core areas of our housing provision: 

• The Hosting Project: Supporting people seeking sanctuary who have no recourse to public funds by giving them a welcoming, safe place to stay in the home of one of our volunteer hosts. 

• Refugee Lodgings: Helping to provide a safe and supported housing option for newly granted refugees at risk of homelessness by matching them with people who have a spare room. 

• Transitional Housing: Providing vital tenancy sustainment support for newly granted refugees transitioning into our shared accommodation properties. 

About you 

We are seeking a dedicated, highly organised, and empathetic professional with proven experience working directly with people experiencing homelessness, particularly asylum seekers and forced migrants. 

You will have a strong working knowledge of the housing system, the UK welfare system (including Universal Credit and Housing Benefit), and how to support people to access their entitlements. Because this role requires managing complex casework and navigating cultural nuances, you must possess strong interpersonal skills, particularly when working with vulnerable people or those with English as a second language.

• Working closely within the Organising Team to make sure we’ve got tactics and ‘on ramps’ for a diverse range of new volunteers, as well as tactics that build leadership and core organising skills. 
• Building centralised Volunteer Teams to help deliver support at scale, and build monitoring, reporting and feedback mechanisms so we always know what’s happening, how it’s going and adjusting as we need to.

You have a strong interest in motivating, supporting, and developing local leaders, with a focus on growing grassroots power and strengthening community connections. Essential Criteria for Success

• Campaign Mobilisation: experience in mobilising local campaign groups or organisers to take diverse, impactful action to build power and meet campaign goals and objectives.
• Volunteer management: experience building and sustaining volunteer structures at a local and/or national level to create a thriving group that builds volunteers leadership skills 
• Strategic Thinking and Problem Solving: ability to think strategically and take initiative to find creative solutions to mobilisation challenges. This includes evaluating progress and quickly adapting if strategies are not meeting ambitious goal
• Effective Project Management and Digital Competence: Candidates need excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure. They must be competent across digital platforms (like Slack and Zoom) and be able to coach others in their use.
• Alignment with Values and Behaviours: Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and experience supporting this in a campaign setting

To provide appropriate emotional and practical support to women in the sex industry and/or those who are being sexually exploited with a specific focus on those who are homeless and experiencing domestic violence and abuse. The women we support require intensive practical and emotional support as well as support navigating health and other social care or criminal justice systems. The women will have poor mental or physical health, experience with homelessness and of the criminal justice system, are often victims of sexual and/or domestic abuse and many are homeless. This post specifically will include a focus on domestic violence, sexual exploitation, sexual violence and housing. Working within a harm reduction ethos prioritising women’s safety and wellbeing, the intensive personalized supported will help women to access other services making appropriate referrals for women who wish to make changes, including exiting/transitioning out of sex work. You will be responsible for ensuring that women with varying needs are supported effectively throughout their pathway of support with Basis and partners, advocating for and with the women you are working with including where necessary challenging stigma and judgement women face.

About the Role

As a Strengths and Assets Coach at Crisis, the national charity for people experiencing homelessness, you will play a key role in supporting people who have experienced homelessness to identify, develop, and build on their personal strengths. Your work will centre on empowering individuals to create sustainable housing situations through meaningful community connections, access to training and development, and opportunities in employment, volunteering, and leisure.

In this role, you will draw on a diverse toolkit of coaching and facilitation skills to support members in setting person-centred goals and taking practical steps toward them. Using a psychologically informed approach, you will help build confidence, resilience, and the capacity to access wider community resources—enabling members to thrive as active citizens. You will also work with the learning team to support the delivery of a range of engaging formal and informal learning opportunities focused on employability, volunteering, tenancy skills, and personal development.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape and grow the Strengths and Assets services at Crisis Edinburgh Skylight, working closely with colleagues and partners across multiple sectors. Together, you will contribute to the development of innovative learning and progression pathways that remove barriers and open doors for people moving out of homelessness.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience Essential for Success

• Experience in community education, tenancy skills development, volunteering, training, and tenancy sustainment.
• Experience working alongside marginalised individuals or groups, using a coaching approach to build strengths and assets.
• A strong understanding of the needs, challenges, and sensitivities involved in supporting people facing homelessness and exclusion, with the ability to develop practical, person-centred solutions.
• Awareness of the barriers to engagement and participation experienced by people facing homelessness and an understanding of how these might be overcome.
• Knowledge of psychologically informed approaches, particularly when working with people who have experienced complex trauma or long-term marginalisation.
