In Wales, fewer than one in three students leave school each year without a standard pass (grade C or above) in GCSE English and maths. This rises to over one in two for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The scale of the challenge at 16 extends into adulthood. The most recent survey of adult literacy and numeracy skills, which took place in 2010, found that a third of adults do not have literacy skills at level 2 (GCSE) or above and over three quarters do not have numeracy skills at or above this level. Lacking gateway qualifications locks people out of many opportunities for education and employment and is associated with adverse outcomes for learning potential, health and well-being.
Get Further exists to change this. Since 2028 our charity has delivered a series of interventions in England that help disadvantaged learners in Further Education to secure gateway English and maths qualifications that unlock opportunities. These interventions include our award-winning GCSE Resit Tuition Programme for those resitting GCSEs, our Functional Skills Tuition Programme, supporting those on or aspiring to undertake apprenticeship programmes, and our resources and training for post-16 English and maths teachers. We are now excited to be expanding our provision into Wales with post-16 GCSE English and maths tuition support. You can read about the impact of our interventions here.
OUR TEAM, VALUES AND BENEFITS
Our central team currently comprises some 40 members, all motivated to reduce educational disadvantage and ensure young people get the gateway qualifications they need to succeed. We currently employ over 100 active tutors. Our main office is in Kings Cross, London, although we also have team members based in Wales, Yorkshire, Birmingham and elsewhere. We share our office with another educational charity, Axiom Maths.
We promote a supportive, collaborative, and inclusive working environment and are guided by our core values. These values are at the heart of our organisation’s personality
At Get Further, we are:
BOLD We are bold and unafraid to go against the grain.
OPTIMISTIC We are optimistic through setbacks, retaining a sense of possibility in the face of challenges.
AMBITIOUS We are ambitious for students who are yet to achieve gateway English and maths qualifications.
TENACIOUS We are tenacious in our drive to achieve impact for the students we support.
Our benefits include:
36 days of holidays per year (including bank holidays)
Ongoing learning and development opportunities
Flexible hybrid and remote working
Cycle to work scheme
Employee Assistance Programme
Termly ‘in-person’ team development days at our offices in London
The opportunity to work in a progressive and socially conscious, growing organisation where we can have an outsized impact on its success and development.

Join Challengers as their new Head of Fundraising and Advocacy and help make it possible for every disabled child and young person to play and have fun, without limits.
Location: Hybrid / Guilford (3 days per week in office)
Applications close: 9 a.m. Monday 10th August 2026
About Challengers
For almost 50 years, Challengers has been transforming the lives of disabled children and young people through inclusive play. We break down barriers, reduce isolation, support families, and provide respite and community when it’s needed most.
Nearly 1 in 5 children has a SEND need, yet many are excluded from school, play and community life, lacking safe spaces to connect and belong. This leads to isolation for children and intense pressure on families. Children become isolated, missing out on vital opportunities to develop confidence, friendship and independence. Parents are facing exhaustion, declining mental health and often being forced to give up work.
Challengers exists to break this cycle, creating inclusive, community-based spaces and providing services where disabled children and their families are supported. From play and youth schemes to family days and parent carer training and three alternative provision sites, our work tackles inclusion at its root by focusing on belonging, connection and dignity.
About the role
As the Head of Fundraising and Advocacy, you will develop and deliver integrated strategies to connect our story, audiences and funding opportunities, driving an increase in brand awareness and voluntary income. This is a senior leadership role, reporting to the CEO and sitting on the senior leadership team (SLT).
The role combines strategic leadership, high-level communications expertise and fundraising innovation to maximise impact and sustainability.
Who we are looking for
We seek an ambitious and collaborative fundraising leader who combines strategic vision with a practical, hands-on approach to delivery. You’ll be an inspiring communicator, engaging team leader, adept at engaging stakeholders and building trusted multi-year relationships that translate into meaningful income growth and organisational impact.
You’ll bring a strong track record of developing and delivering successful fundraising strategies across multiple income streams, alongside experience of contributing at a senior leadership level.
You’ll embrace change with resilience, identify opportunities where others see challenges and work collaboratively across fundraising, communications and the wider organisation to maximise impact.
Ultimately, we’re looking for someone who is driven by purpose, excited by opportunity and ready to help shape the next stage of our fundraising journey.
