Physical Activity Mentor

What You’ll Do

Support older people aged 65+ to become more physically active and achieve personal wellbeing goals through one-to-one mentoring. You'll provide encouragement, motivation, and practical support to help someone make positive lifestyle changes over a 12-week programme.

You will:

· Meet with an older person regularly to build a supportive mentoring relationship

· Help them identify a wellbeing or physical activity goal

· Work together to create achievable steps and milestones

· Encourage and motivate them to stay active and overcome barriers

· Review progress and celebrate achievements

· Signpost to local activities and opportunities where appropriate

· Maintain accurate records of mentoring sessions

Placement Volunteers at the British Red Cross are highly valued for the skills and energy they bring. We aim to provide our placement volunteers with an insight into the daily workings of the world’s largest humanitarian organisation. They will have access to relevant in-house training and development opportunities during their placement with possible ad hoc opportunities to get involved in other areas of activity.

Our placement volunteers will help make a great contribution to the work of the British Red Cross and will be responsible for achieving specific agreed objectives within one of our various departments.

About the role:

Ready To Help is a new British Red Cross programme that provides funding and support for young people aged 15-25 to design and deliver projects that help communities become stronger, more connected and more resilient.

We're looking for a creative and enthusiastic volunteer to help launch and promote the programme over a three-month placement. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting a national charity whilst helping young people turn their ideas into action.

Working alongside the Ready To Help Manager, you'll help create engaging resources, promote funding opportunities and connect with organisations that can help us reach young people across the UK.

**The expected start date for the placement is October 2026 and the placement will run for 3 months, weekdays, between 4 and 8 hours each week. **

This role would suit someone interested in marketing, communications, graphic design, stakeholder engagement, digital media, campaigns or community outreach. You'll have the opportunity to contribute to real projects, develop practical skills and help shape how the programme is experienced by young people and partner organisations.

Most volunteering can be completed remotely and the role is flexible around work, study and other commitments.

What you will be doing:

You'll work alongside the Ready To Help Manager to support promotion of the programme and improve engagement. Activities may include:

• Designing visually engaging versions of project resources such as the Ready To Help Applicant Information Pack, Frequently Asked Questions Sheet and Learning Journey.
• Creating promotional materials for schools, colleges, universities, youth groups and community organisations.
• Developing posters and digital resources.
• Helping identify organisations, networks and contacts that may be interested in promoting the programme.
• Building and maintaining a stakeholder contact database.
• Developing creative ideas to measure engagement and understand which promotional approaches are most effective.

We're looking for a volunteer who can help us raise awareness of the Ready To Help programme and ensure that as many young people as possible have the opportunity to access funding and support.

You'll help us communicate with a wide range of audiences, present information in engaging ways and develop creative approaches to promoting the programme. Your ideas and contributions will help ensure Ready To Help reaches the young people who could benefit from it most.

We'd love to hear from people who:

Project Overview

This role will offer the opportunity to become part of the volunteer team at the Warner Textile Archive to support the progress of making inert conservation polyester enclosures for the paper artworks within the collection. The role will involve careful handling of historic paper artworks and creation of bespoke inert polyester enclosures to contribute to the long-term preservation of our significant collection.

Role Description

• Careful handling of fragile historic artworks ranging in date from c.1870-2000s in order to produce accurate measurements to make polyester enclosures.

• Sorting artworks by size and condition to prioritize enclosure creation.

• Measuring, cutting via guillotine, and welding polyester to make the enclosures to exact measurements and conservation standards.

• Ensuring artworks go back into the correct locations after enclosures are made.

• Working with the team on any emergency enclosure requirements for vulnerable items.

Further Information

Full training and support will be given on all aspects of the role. No previous experience necessary. 

We are able to facilitate a flexible work schedule based on the volunteer’s existing responsibilities and deadlines. We require a minimum of ten days commitment to offer training, and to provide a meaningful work experience. A longer time period is preferable. 

Some online training on the history of Warner & Sons and collections care will be required prior to the volunteer’s start date.

The role is not remote and will require travel to Warner Textile Archive, Silks Way, Braintree, Essex, CM7 3GB. We have a travel bursary of up to £50 per day which is able to offer support with travel costs, and £5 per day for subsistence.

About the Warner Textile Archive

The Warner Textile Archive is a significant collection of design, business, economic and social history of textile manufacturing firm Warner & Sons, based in Braintree between the dates of 1870 – 2001. The Warner Textile Archive is the largest collection of an individual textile manufacturer available in the public domain in the United Kingdom. We hold over 100,000 administrative records, paper designs, trial samples, manufacturing equipment and textiles of Warner & Sons, their predecessors and successors, illustrating how furnishing textile manufacturing changed over more than 150 years.

Essential Skills and Knowledge Required

• Excellent spatial awareness and practical making skills which require attention to detail such as a background in pattern cutting, dress making or technical drawing.

• Interest in solving visual and spatial puzzles to limit wastage of materials.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the willingness to work with a dedicated team of staff and volunteers of different ages and backgrounds.

• Must be able to follow clear instructions and ask questions when unsure.

• This position requires moving and lifting large items.

Gardening Volunteer – Day Care Centre

What You’ll Do

Support the development and maintenance of our allotment space at the Mabel Churn Day Care Centre. You’ll help create a calm, welcoming outdoor environment where older people can enjoy nature, take part in light gardening activities, and connect with others.

You will:

· Help maintain the allotment space (e.g. watering, weeding, planting, harvesting)

· Support the set-up and upkeep of planting areas, raised beds, or pots

· Encourage and support clients to get involved in simple gardening tasks

· Help keep the outdoor space safe, tidy, and accessible

· Work with staff to plan seasonal planting or small garden projects

· Report any concerns or maintenance needs to staff

Skills You’ll Use or Develop

· Interest in gardening or outdoor activities (no expert knowledge needed)

· Friendly and patient approach when engaging with older people

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team

· Basic understanding of health and safety in an outdoor setting

We're looking for Reception volunteers across our offices in South West Surrey: Cranleigh, Farnham, Godalming, Guildford, Haslemere. 

What will you do?

• complete an introduction to Citizens Advice and training for your role
• welcome clients and other visitors to the local Citizens Advice
• explain to the client how long they might be waiting and what will happen and give out a form for clients to fill in
• type up information from the client form onto a spreadsheet or database
• answer the telephone, reply to emails and post
• help with the day to day running of the Citizens Advice service

· Supporting and encouraging a team of fundraising volunteers

· Planning fundraising events and activities with your team

· Allocating tasks before and during fundraising events

· Keeping financial records from fundraising events

· Encouraging and promoting a professional image of Cats Protection 

· Following policies and guidelines and ensuring licences and permits are obtained for events

You will develop new skills, expand your knowledge and make a significant contribution to improving the lives of cats and kittens by helping raise funds and awareness through organising local events. You will also meet new people, make new friends and be part of a dedicated team of volunteers. You will be supported and guided from our National Cat Centre and through our regional and local volunteer groups and teams. We offer engaging online and face-to-face training, expenses and have policies and processes to help volunteers get the most out of their time with us.

We're looking for someone with the following:

· Great people skills and the ability to bring out the best in others

· Excellent organisational skills

· The ability to prioritise and delegate

· An appreciation of the importance of handling money and charity resources responsibly

· Fine-tuned communication skills and a passion for engaging with people within your local community

· Basic IT skills to use Cats Protection systems - training and support can be provided

· Committee volunteers need to be aged 18+

Our fundraising team leaders usually spend three to four hours per week in this role, which is flexible and can be shared by more than one volunteer if needed.
