Our holistic approach to empowering survivors allows women and girls to achieve independent lives free from abuse.
About the Service
Solace is a registered charity with the Charity Commission for England and Wales. The organisation is governed by a Board of Trustees, which is made up of up to 12 members from across a range of professional and life experiences.
Solace is seeking trustees to join our Board to fulfil their responsibilities in developing the strategic direction and overall governance of the organisation. This is an exciting opportunity to help drive the success of a growing charity that makes a profound and positive impact on the lives of women who have suffered from violence and abuse.
We are looking for those who value the equality of all women, are passionate about their wellbeing, and the challenges they face in violent and abusive environments. An interest in Solace’s work and approach is essential, as well as an ambitious outlook for Solace’s future.
Due to the nature of our work, we are looking for a female to take on this role, this is a genuine occupational requirement in line with the Equality Act 2010.
About the Role
A successful candidate would have a good understanding of current accounting standards in the UK charities sector and be able to guide the organisation through compliance and regulatory matters both now and in the future.
This would include:
- Review financial statements (income, expenses, reserves, cash flow) as presented by the Solace Finance Director + CEO. Ensure successful audits are delivered on an annual basis in line with Companies House and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor financial statements for financial health and going concern status in the near term. Monitor financials to ensure the charity is financially viable in the longer term.
- Ensure adequate financial controls are in place for Solace in coordination with the Finance Director + team
- Management of risk and risk oversight: identify financials risks (funding gaps, cash flow deficiencies, under-diversified funding, fraud) and support on mitigating actions. Ensure Charities Commission updates are completed and documented as needed.
- Have oversight of Solace’s Reserves as well as Reserves ambitions over the longer term.
- Help the Board understand the financial information and position of the charity including audit results, budget implications, annual reporting sign off.
- Ensure the charity’s funds are deployed in line with Solace’s overall purpose and strategy.
About the Location
We have two forms of meetings that trustees are expected to attend at our London head office; Board Meetings, which occur 4 times a year and Board Away Days which can take place up to two times annually. All trustees also need to be a part of a subcommittee, which are held online quarterly.
About the Time Committment
Trustees will need to attend 4 in person board meetings per year. Each trustee is expected to join at least one subcommittee, with meetings held remotely 4 times per year. The expected time commitment for trustees averages one day per month across the year.

Open Country is a Charity that helps people with disabilities to access and enjoy the countryside. We are always looking for volunteers to support our conservation and gardening groups, walking group and our weekend outings.
- Conservation group meet on a Tuesday and is made up of adults with learning disabilities who carry out practical conservation tasks each week at various locations. We work with organisations like Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and RSPB. Tasks can include meadow creation, tree planting, pond maintenance and invasive species removal to name but a few.
- Walking group meet on a Thursday and is made up of adults with learning disabilities or sensory impairments. We walk between 5-7miles each week at different locations around Yorkshire and normally finish the walk with a pub or cafe stop.
- Gardening and arts group meet on a Friday, and is made up of adults with learning disabilities, where we learn about gardening and various natural craft like willow weaving. We also regulary work with organisations like the National Trust and the National Coal Mining Museum.
We also run weekend outings for people with all kinds of disabilities providing experiences and a chance to socialise and explore new places. Our activities range from a gentle amble round a country house and gardens, wildlife watching at a nature reserve to axe throwing and abseiling.
As a volunteer you would be helping our members stick together as a group, or carry out the conservation tasks, making sure they are happy and safe.
No experience is required, just a willingness to get stuck in! We will provide all relevant training for the role.
We meet at Thornes Park Nursery, Wakefield at 10am and head out in our accessible minibus to site.

Gatwick Aviation Museum is a registered Charity and welcomes a wide variety of visitors each year, who are able to enjoy the varied collection of incredible aircraft and exhibits on display.
The Museum is currently open to the public on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 10am to 5pm, although we regularly welcome groups of all ages for tours and events during the week or in the evenings. We also host a number of different events throughout the year from car shows to cinema nights and open for extended periods during the School holidays. So additional cover in the coffee shop would be required to help out during those busy times.
We want every visit to our museum to be a very special one. As our visitor numbers increase, we need the support of additional volunteers to join our friendly team who go out of their way to ensure our customers have a memorable experience. Duties will include:-
- Welcoming customers with a friendly attitude;
- Serving hot and cold food and drinks to customers;
- Maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards in all areas, including equipment;
- Using till and processing payments, handling card and cash transactions;
- Ensuring stock on display is replenished, maintaining inventory levels reporting any shortages to the Manager;
You don't need prior experience as training will be provided (including Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety, First Aid, Fire Safety). Just bring your enthusiasm, be keen to learn and feel confident in a customer facing role. An enhanced DBS check will also be carried out.

Our shops are a hive of activity and the heart of the local community. They raise funds to support our vital work and provide a place for local people to find out more about how we help older people in their area. Our volunteers always enjoy being part of our shop teams; chatting to our customers about the fabulous items we sell and telling them about the fantastic work that we do.
As a Customer Service Volunteer you will get the chance to meet new people and make friends, plus play a vital role in helping to raise funds to support local older people.
You will be working on the shop floor as the welcoming face of our charity. Serving customers with a smile, using the till (don't worry, we will show you how) and handling money and sales.
When people come in to donate items you will be thanking them for their support and helping them to complete Gift Aid signups on our Gift Aid system.
You will help to make our shops look amazing; putting out items that the sorting teams have prepared, helping with merchandising, labelling and ensuring the shop is clean and always looking its' best.
You will need to be ok using a touch screen device as our tills run on a tablet, though we will always provide full training and some time for you to get used to using this first.
Lastly, you may have people enquiring about our work, or asking for help and we will provide you with all the details of where to refer them to within the charity.
It would be ideal if you could volunteer one shift a week, which is about four hours but we're also happy to have more flexible times. No special skills are needed as we will show you what to do and will provide all the training you need.
