Role description for Safeguarding Champion (Voluntary role)

Read Easy provides free, confidential, one to-one reading coaching for adults who struggle with reading, through a network of volunteer groups. Read Easy groups are changing the lives of individual adults across the country by providing them with the support they need to learn to read, and in turn opening doors for them to all sorts of new opportunities in life. Outline of the Safeguarding Champion role
As the Safeguarding Champion you will ensure that your group implements, understands and works within the Read Easy UK Safeguarding Policy and organising DBS checks when necessary.
How we will support you
You will be provided with the Management Team Handbook, training/induction, policies and guidance specifically needed for this role, including access to support from a Read Easy UK Regional Adviser, via your Team Leader. You will also be invited to Read Easy UK’s regional forums and annual conference which give volunteers an opportunity for networking with those from other groups.
What you will be doing
● Reporting and actioning any safeguarding issues raised within the Team.
● Becoming familiar with Read Easy Safeguarding and DBS policies and appendices.
● Liaising with the local Adult Safeguarding Helpdesk, to seek advice or refer a case to them for further action in accordance with the Safeguarding Policy.
● Providing an induction for new Management Team Members so they are aware of the safeguarding requirements of the group, using the resources provided.
● Providing a short Safeguarding Refresher Session at a coach meeting annually.
● Carrying out Enhanced DBS checks on behalf of the group when appropriate.
● Ensuring that the group is acting in a way that recognises its safeguarding responsibilities in all its activities.
● Being the single point of contact for anyone within the group who wants to report any form of abuse or suspected abuse, or who has concerns and needs advice.
● Attending management team meetings, typically every six to eight weeks.

● Ideally experience and understanding of adult safeguarding.

● Good communication and people skills, with a commitment to maintaining confidentiality.

● Energy and enthusiasm with an average of two hours a week to commit to the role.

At One Degree, our mentors, ambassadors, and teachers are more than just volunteers—they’re lifelines for students often overlooked in their schools and communities. By offering direction, encouragement, and a sense of possibility, our volunteers transform lives while experiencing the profound reward of making a real, tangible impact.

Most of our mentors are young professionals, bringing passion, patience, and empathy to help GCSE/Year 11 students (ages 15–16) navigate their challenges. These volunteers serve as role models, guiding students who might otherwise feel left behind toward brighter futures.

To foster meaningful connections and provide continuity, we ask volunteers to commit to at least three in-person or online sessions per year. This ensures students build trust and form bonds with the people dedicated to helping them succeed.

What time commitments are required?

Preparation

1. Mentor registration (2 minutes)
2. Online mentor training course (30 minutes)
3. Online safeguarding course (30 minutes)
4. Online DBS/CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check (15 minutes)
5. Online personalised 1-on-1 mentor training (2 x 30 minutes)

Total time needed to become a mentor – approximately 2.5 hours

Mentoring

1. Choose availability that fits your schedule – whether it’s 5 hours a week or just 30 minutes a month.
2. Mentor online from anywhere in the world.
3. Adjust your availability as your circumstances change.
4. Focus on mentoring subjects you’re confident in.

What it takes

Anyone who meets the following criteria is welcome to apply:

• Able to volunteer a minimum of three sessions per programme
• Patient, empathetic and considerate
• Willing to participate in group activities and sports

Important Note! You do NOT need exceptional skills in Maths or English, or previous mentoring or teaching experience to be a One Degree mentor.

What’s in it for you

1. This is flexible – with no set days and times, you can make yourself available based on YOUR schedule and you can update availability with our new integrated calendar system (training required here)

This is innovative – during our 1-on-1 training we will run through this new addition to our custom-built online mentoring platform where you can a) connect your personal and work calendars b) select provisional availability and c) be booked by One Degree students based on their availability, your availability or by mentor speciality. Produced Moon's board is looking to grow later this year, as we add new voices to our Trustees. 

It is not essential to have sat on a board before, what we're looking for is people who connect with the work we do as a charity and our values of being caring, playful, challenging,

experimental, pluralistic, anti-racist and climate just.

The Beecroft Bequest is a grant-making fund run by the Museums Association (MA), awarding grants for the purchase of pictures and works of art (furniture or textiles can be considered) not later than the 18th century in date. We are looking for one new member with an understanding of grant giving to join the sub-committee.

The role involves attending at least one online meeting per year and liaising as a committee via email and telephone to deal with applications throughout the year.

The role is not remunerated but expenses are reimbursed.

We are particularly interested in applications from people with a range of diverse backgrounds, including people with disabilities, people of colour, people who identify as LGBTQI+ and people from a range of socio-economic and educational backgrounds.

As a Home-Start Camden & Islington volunteer, you’ll use your own parenting or childcare experience to support a local parent who may be feeling overwhelmed, isolated or lacking confidence. By spending just 2–3 hours a week with a family, you can help them feel more confident in their parenting, access local activities and services, attend appointments, and feel less alone.

At the same time, you’ll develop practical skills in communication, active listening, relationship-building and problem-solving. Role Yoga Teacher Volunteer

Service Amy’s Place is a partnership between the Amy Winehouse Foundation and Clarion Housing, providing supported living accommodation for young women aged 18-30 in recovery from drugs, alcohol and other addictive behaviours.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, reliable and compassionate volunteer with good interpersonal skills, preferably with some mental health awareness training and knowledge of addiction recovery, to teach women interested in enjoying the benefits of physical activity whilst improving their yoga skills.

Location Hackney

Commitment This is a flexible opportunity and volunteering times and frequency will vary depending on the volunteer’s availability and the needs of the residents. It might be every week or fortnight ideally for a minimum of 3 months.

DBS This role will require us to carry out an enhanced check through the disclosure and barring service.

Activities Deliver yoga classes for women interested in enjoying the mental health benefits of physical activity whilst improving their skills. Preferably the applicant will have mental health awareness training. At a minimum, you will have an understanding of addiction recovery and be sensitive to mental health struggles including eating disorders and body image difficulties.

Support § Volunteers receive a thorough induction and have access to any relevant in-house and external training § Reasonable travel expenses will be reimbursed § The role is based at the service in East London. Can you use social media effectively to raise awareness of our work and help us reach out to Adults who cannot read?

Spreading the word is key to explain what our Read Easy group does and how people can get the reading support they need or volunteer to help.

You will be creative, determined and passionate about communications, and bringing people together. You’ll be confident using local media, social media, and other resources provided by Read Easy UK to help get the message out there into your community about the life-changing journey of learning to read. 

Stepping Stones Learning and Leisure is a small, friendly charity based in Southwark, providing inclusive activities for adults with learning disabilities. We believe everyone should have the chance to express themselves, connect with others, and take part in activities that bring joy, confidence, and new skills.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic and proactive Music Class Volunteer to support our weekly Tuesday sessions (10.30am-12.30pm and 1.30pm-3.30pm), held at St Faith’s Community Centre, Red Post Hill, SE24 9JQ (close to North Dulwich and Herne Hill stations). We do not require applicants to be able to volunteer in both sessions, but the option is there.

About The Role

You’ll help our tutor support a group of adults with learning disabilities to explore a range of instruments. In this class you will play an important part in fostering a creative and relaxed environment so our learners can express themselves and enjoy the benefits of music.

As an Music Class Volunteer at Stepping Stones, you will:

Are you passionate about gardens and community engagement? We’re looking for an enthusiastic Assistant County Organiser to support activities in Greenwich, Blackheath and surrounding areas. The role is to support the County Organiser in managing the volunteer County Team and work as part of the team. Support the Garden Owners of the National Garden Scheme who open gardens for charity. 

Reports to: County Organiser.

Location:  Home based but with travel to gardens and other events/meetings.

Core activities:

 Manage garden openings, proceeds, insurance and Health and Safety.

 Identify and secure new gardens and ensure that existing gardens continue to reach the required standard.

 Implement new policies as agreed by the Board at local level.

 Refer all complaints to the County Organiser for discussion and resolution.

The Listening Place is a volunteer-led charity aiming to transform how we support people who feel suicidal.  Our trained volunteers are part of a team delivering face-to-face, confidential, ongoing support to thousands of people each year.  They help create the warm and welcoming environment that encourages people struggling with suicidal thoughts and feelings to talk openly without being judged or given advice.   

Listening volunteers provide ongoing face-to-face support to visitors on regular, fortnightly 4-hour shifts during which they meet with up to 3 visitors (for up to 50 minutes each). In order to ensure continuity for our visitors we require a one-year minimum commitment from our LVs, as well as three months’ notice of intention to leave.

No experience or qualifications are necessary – we provide full training in active listening.  We look for warmth, empathy and resilience in our volunteers and the ability to be non-judgemental and avoid giving advice.

We ask for a weekly commitment of four hours for a period of at least six months.
