Background

Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) works for the health and dignity of Palestinians living under occupation and as refugees. A UK registered charity, we work in collaboration with Palestinian communities and trusted local partners, and coordinate with key stakeholders and relevant clusters, to meet a wide range of health and social needs, from providing vital medical aid in emergencies, to supporting the development of better health services for the long term. We also uplift the voices of Palestinians, and campaign for an end to the barriers to health and dignity that come from living through occupation, displacement, discrimination and conflict.

Purpose of role

MAP is in a period of growth and rapid development, and as such, the incoming Chief Operating Officer (COO) will be responsible for the financial strategy and management of MAP and for the leadership of operational areas to help deliver the organisation’s mission and strategic goals. The COO provides support to the CEO in areas of governance, legal and risk management and may deputise for the CEO as required.

Responsibilities

Strategy, vision and leadership

• Be accountable to the CEO and Board in the areas of finance, technology, risk and compliance, supply chain and logistics, and safety and security.
• Advise the CEO and SMT on financial planning, legal, governance and related policy matters.
• Work closely with SMT colleagues to ensure that appropriate processes and systems are in place across the organisation, including delivery against KPIs.
• Serve as the management liaison to the Finance & Operations Committee, Audit Risk & Governance Committee and, where required, to the Board of Trustees; effectively communicate and present critical financial and operational matters at governance meetings.
• Ensure robust, secure and scalable IT systems and infrastructure. Lead on information governance & data protection and identify and drive opportunities for digital transformation.
• Lead on the development of MAP’s strategic goals and objectives in all areas of responsibility and contribute to the development of other goals as well as the overall management of the organisation.
• Work with direct reports to ensure the delivery of an effective strategy in all areas of responsibility.
• Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the CEO informed of all critical issues.
• Lead cross-organisational projects in line with organisational strategy and direction.
• Build strong working relationships with colleagues across the organisation at all levels, adopting and encouraging a collaborative working approach.
• Represent the organisation externally, as necessary, in areas under the COO’s responsibility.
• Deputise for the CEO as required.

Team development/leadership

• Oversee, direct, and organise the work of the finance and operations teams.
• Create a high-performing team that is ambitious and passionate about MAP’s vision.
• Ensure staff members receive timely and appropriate training and development, to facilitate continual improvement as individuals and as a team.
• Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals.
• Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach and motivate the team to be innovative and professional in its thinking and delivery.

Operations

• Upgrade and implement an appropriate system of policies, internal controls, standards, and procedures.
• Ensure annual audits, budgets, and reports in all areas of operations are produced in an accurate and timely manner for SMT, the Board, and Board sub-committees.
• Ensure strong financial controls, risk management and regulatory compliance, including with UK Charity Commission standards, donor requirements and legal and regulatory requirements in countries and territories of operation.
• Build a culture of continuous improvement in operations and ensure appropriate and timely action to address operational risks when they arise.
• Provide analytical support to the CEO and SMT including development of internal management reporting capabilities.

Profile

Person specification

• Recognised professional accounting qualification (e.g. ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA, ACA) or post-graduate business degree mandatory.
• Minimum 10 years’ experience in a senior management role ideally with in-house financial management experience gained in a high-growth organisation.
• Experience either as an employee or board member of a non-profit organisation; must be familiar with non-profit finance and accounting regulations.
• Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organisational change and development within a growing organisation.
• Excellent judgment and creative problem-solving skills including negotiation and conflict resolution skills.
• Bring strong mentoring and coaching experience to a team with diverse levels of expertise.

The BMA is the trade union and professional body for doctors in the UK.  They represent, support and negotiate on behalf of all UK doctors and medical students.

Reporting into the Group Financial Controller, the Group VAT Accountant will be responsible for ensuring that the BMA Group (BMA and BMJPG) properly accounts for VAT and meets their statutory return, including overseas equivalents. You will proactively ensure that the finance systems and internal processes across the group are compliant and will manage relationships with external advisors and HMRC, as the organisation’s VAT Subject Matter Expert.

• Undertake annual reviews of the VAT position, including any exemptions applied during the year.
• Proactively ensure that the finance systems and internal processes across the Group are compliant with the required tax legislation and remain alert to any future changes.

To be successful as a Group VAT Accountant you'll ideally have:

• Accounting Qualification (CCAB) (essential)

The Role

Reporting to the Director of Finance and Operations, the Financial Controller will lead IIED’s core finance operations, ensuring integrity in financial reporting, compliance with accounting standards, and sound financial controls. As a key member of the Finance Leadership Team, you will manage financial operations, audit, balance sheet oversight, and regulatory compliance, while driving improvements in systems, processes, and reporting.

You will lead and mentor a team of finance professionals covering financial accounting, treasury, transactional finance and statutory compliance, and work closely with colleagues across programmes and operations to ensure strong financial stewardship and timely, accurate financial reporting.

Key responsibilities include:

- Lead and oversee all financial accounting and finance operations
- Ensure statutory compliance and audit readiness
- Strengthen internal controls and financial policies
- Manage treasury and cashflow
- Manage all tax-related obligations
- Support global distributed workforce
- Drive finance systems optimisation and process transformation

About You

To be considered as our Financial Controller, you will need to be:

- Professional accounting qualification (e.g., ACA, ACCA, CIMA) with significant post-qualification experience.
- Proven experience as a Financial Controller or similar senior finance role, ideally within the charity, NGO, or international development sectors.
- Strong technical knowledge of financial accounting, statutory reporting, and UK charity accounting standards.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and motivate a finance team.
- Experience managing audits, regulatory compliance, and risk management in complex organisations.
- Excellent financial systems skills and experience improving processes and controls.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders across finance and non-finance teams.

We are now seeking an experienced and motivated Finance Manager to join our Finance team and support the strategic financial management of the business.

Job Overview:

The Management Accountant will be pivotal in providing accurate and timely financial information and analysis to support decision-making across our care homes and retirement villages. The successful candidate will work closely with senior management to ensure the company’s financial performance is closely monitored and aligned with organisational goals.

You will be responsible for managing month-end processes, budgeting, forecasting and providing insights into financial performance for our retirement villages. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to a business that positively affects people’s lives.

Key Responsibilities:

• Financial Reporting & Analysis:

o Prepare monthly management accounts, including profit and loss (P&L) statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements for care homes, nursery and retirement villages.

o Provide financial analysis to support key decision-making, highlighting cost-saving and efficiency improvements opportunities.

• Budgeting & Forecasting:

o Work with departmental managers and Head of Finance to create annual budgets and financial forecasts for individual homes and the group.

o Assist with quarterly and annual forecasting, revising financial projections based on changing business conditions.

• Cost Control & Financial Performance:

o Monitor operational costs and identify areas for cost reduction, ensuring financial controls are in place.

o Support the procurement process by evaluating supplier contracts and ensuring cost-effective purchasing.

• Compliance & Audit:

o Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards and regulations (e.g., IFRS, FRS 102, VAT).

o Assist in preparing year-end audits, providing necessary documentation and reports.

• Stakeholder Engagement:

o Work closely with village and care home managers, the senior finance team, and external auditors.

o Present financial results to non-financial managers and ensure financial understanding across the business.

• System and Process Improvement:

o Contribute to the continuous improvement of financial systems and reporting processes.

Key Requirements:

• Qualifications and skills:

o Formal accounting qualification (eg ACA, ACCA) is essential.

o Advanced understanding of accounting principles and practices.

o Familiarity with medium/large accounting software.

o Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and make data-driven decisions.

o Proficient in financial software and Microsoft Excel (advanced level).

Job Title: Executive Administrator 

Location: Central Office which is based around a 10 minute walk from Highbury and Islington Station. Hybrid working available, approximately 2 - 3 days per week in the office including every Tuesday. Additional office, service, and away days would be required for attendance.

Salary: 

Shift Pattern: 37.5 hours per week Monday to Friday 09:00 - 17:00. At times you may be required to work outside these hours, including for out of hours board meetings in the evenings, and other meetings which may be after hours. 

About the role

We're looking for an Executive Administrator to join our central office team, reporting to the Director of Finance and Resource. In this role, you will play a pivotal role in providing high-level administrative and governance support to various leaders within the organisation, including the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), The Board, and CEO. 

In this role, you will ensure the smooth operation of coordinating meetings, managing governance processes, and supporting strategic initiatives. You will facilitate board and SLT meetings, including scheduling, preparing agendas, taking formal minutes, and ensuring a timely follow-up on actions, whilst overseeing compliance with health and safety regulations, supporting the organisation's environmental strategy.

You will further line manage a small team of 2 Administrative Support Officers who support with the day to day administration and management of our central office.

About you

This role is ideal for someone who is organised, with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast paced organisation. You will be a proactive problem solver with excellent communication skills, both verbally and written. You will be able to organise and manage events and away days, as well as manage our booking systems and general running. You will have proven minute taking experience, able to write minutes for meetings in an organised manner, and manage our shared online platforms for ease of access, and usability. You will have:

• Experience in high level administration duties, ideally within a similar role, supporting senior leadership teams and boards with all areas of administration
• Previous experience taking minutes in meetings
• IT Proficiency: Knowledge, skills, and ability to learn and manage online systems, particularly Microsoft programs, able to book and manage meetings using outlook and teams
• Excellent numeracy and financial skills, with the ability to deliver best practice in financial management and produce accurate and timely financial information
• Ability to write reports, manage data, and oversee audit processes to a professional, high business standard
• Ability to work with confidential information in a timely secure manner
• Analytical skills, with the ability to find, absorb, and summarise complex information
• Attention to detail and quality, able to verify and proofread documents
• Time and workload management: Ability to work to tight deadlines with competing priorities
• Ability to prepare, and write documents, letters, and other communication to a professional, high business standard
