Position: Children’s Development Worker

Location: West Midlands (Birmingham/Walsall)

Hours: Full-time (37.5 hours per week)

The Role

Working as part of a team, the job may involve working weekends, unsociable hours, and bank holidays and you will be required to work flexible hours to meet the needs of children and young people. 

Duties include:

• Design and deliver an age-appropriate programme of structured and free play activities to support children’s wellbeing and development.
• Identify individual support needs and coordinate with colleagues and partner agencies (e.g., schools, health and social care) to ensure needs are met.
• Build positive relationships with children and young people, ensuring sessions are inclusive, engaging and safe.
• Promote safeguarding and follow child protection procedures, including advocacy and attendance at relevant multi-agency meetings when required.
• Maintain accurate records and monitoring systems, producing monthly/quarterly reports against agreed outcomes.
• Create opportunities for children, young people and parents/carers to participate, provide feedback and shape service delivery.
• Plan and organise resources and activities (including offsite and holiday provision), evaluating sessions to drive continuous improvement.

About You

You will have experience of working with children and young people aged 0 – 18 years old and be able to speak at least one South Asian language.

You will also have:

• A good standard of education, including a minimum of level 4 or equivalent in Maths and English.
• NNEB Diploma/BTEC in Nursery nursing / NVQ3/CQS in childcare or equivalent
• Experience of devising and delivering creative play activities for children that assist in their holistic needs.
• Experience of working as part of a team and able to demonstrate your positive influence on team dynamics
• Able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing
• Able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
• Able to listen actively and adapt your communication style to meet the needs of the recipient.
• Able to be calm and resilient whilst under pressure and to remain optimistic and persistent.
• Be IT literate and familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.

The Role

Social prescribing link workers will work as a key part of the primary care network (PCN) multi-disciplinary team. Social prescribing can help PCNs to strengthen community and personal resilience and reduces health and wellbeing inequalities by addressing the wider determinants of health, such as debt, poor housing and physical inactivity, by increasing people’s active involvement with their local communities. It particularly works for people with long term conditions (including support for mental health), for people who are lonely or isolated, or have complex social needs which affect their wellbeing.

Responsibilities include:

• Working with direct supervision from the Programme Lead/Senior Link Worker and input from the PCN’s Clinical Lead GP, take referrals from staff in GP practices within the local PCN.
• Provide personalised support to individuals, their families and carers to take control of their health and wellbeing, live independently and improve their health outcomes, as a key member of the PCN multi-disciplinary team.
• Developing trusting relationships and taking a holistic approach, based on the person’s priorities and co-produce a simple personalised care and support plan to improve health and wellbeing, introducing or reconnecting people to community groups and statutory services.
• Work collaboratively with all local partners to contribute towards supporting local community groups and organisations, making themselves aware of local resources and “assets” through mapping and then building a relationship with these organisations.  Also sharing intelligence regarding any gaps or problems identified in local provision with commissioners and local authorities. 
• Social prescribing link workers will work collaboratively with GP’s and have a role in promoting social prescribing and educating non-clinical and clinical staff within their PCN multi-disciplinary teams on the benefits of social prescribing
• Raise awareness of other services available within the community and how and when patients can access them. Linking into the work of Neighbourhood Network Schemes, locality Adult Social Care & Community Mental Health Teams.

About You

As a Social Prescribing Link Worker, you will have a Level 3 qualification in a relevant field (Health & Social Care, Health Trainer, Health Improvement, Community Family Worker, Psychology) or be working towards/willing to work towards.

You will have:

• Demonstrable commitment to professional and personal development
• Experience of working directly in a community based context (including unpaid work)
• Experience of supporting people with a mental health need and or complexities/vulnerabilities
• Experience of delivering one to one support
• Experience of partnership/collaborative working and of building relationships across a variety of organisations
• Knowledge of VCSE and community services in the locality
• Understanding of the wider determinants of health, including social, economic and environmental factors and their impact on communities, individuals, their families and carers
• Understanding of the barriers faced by those living in isolation
• Knowledge of IT systems including ability to use word processing skills, emails, the internet and able to create simple plans and reports
• Ability to complete paperwork, keep records and carry out own administration

About the Role

As an Independent Victim Advocate you will provide structured, tailored support plans based on holistic assessments for individuals affected by crime. You will make initial contact with victims to explain our service and offer ongoing support via telephone, emails or text, tailoring the support to the victims preferences i.e. home/office visits or weekly calls. Your responsibilities will include developing, delivering, and monitoring safety and support plans, completing risk assessments and providing resources, interventions, and information to service users.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage a caseload of self-referred & referred service users, providing information & advocacy to help them navigate the criminal justice process.
• Conduct risk & needs assessments, ensuring each victim receives tailored support & information.
• Identify barriers to accessing services & work with multi agency partners to provide ongoing support.
• Develop and maintain effective working relationships and promote effective communication between staff and other stakeholders.
• Keep accurate & confidential case records.
• With further training you will support children and victims of domestic/sexual abuse

About You

Ideally, you will have an understanding of the impact of crime on victims & experience in delivering services within a statutory, voluntary, or multi-agency setting. Experience in managing a caseload and of completing risk & needs assessments would be beneficial.

You will need:

• Strong written & verbal communication skills.
• Competent IT skills, able to use generic systems.
• Good organisational & time management skills, able to manage competing needs and priorities.
• To work effectively both as part of a team & independently

You will walk alongside survivors as they navigate their next steps — offering consistent support whether or not they choose to engage with the criminal justice process.
