Making a better life for cats, because life is better with cats
About us
We are a world-class visitor attraction and leading science research centre. We use the Museum's unique collections and our unrivalled expertise to tackle the biggest challenges facing the world today. We care for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcome more than five million visitors annually and 16 million visits to our website.
Today the Museum is more relevant and influential than ever. By attracting people from a range of backgrounds to work for us, we can continue to look at the world with fresh eyes and find new ways of doing things.
We employ 1100 staff in a variety of roles, all united by our vision of a future where people and planet thrive. We need everyone to have the passion and drive to help us with our mission to create advocates for our planet and inspire millions to care about the natural world.
This role is specifically working as part of the Distributed System of Scientific Collections UK programme.
UK natural science collections hold more than 140 million items. These are an unrivalled source of data about how the Earth and its natural systems formed over 4.56 billion years, with the potential to support research that addresses some of the critical issues facing the world, including biodiversity and climate change. They contain evidence of the changes in the natural world including the impact of human life on our planet over the past few thousand years. The scientific, commercial, and societal benefits of these collections are currently constrained by the limits of physical access, and by highly fragmented digitisation efforts with less than 10% digitally available.
DiSSCo UK is a consortium of UK natural science collections, led by the Natural History Museum in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), who are developing a national infrastructure to support the digitisation and use of the UK’s natural science collections to support this critical research.
This will take the form of a 10-year programme focused on digitisation of critical mass of collections as FAIR data, made available through a well-supported backbone of technology infrastructure, with continued development and application of innovative approaches such as greater use of Artificial Intelligence and robotics. Investment of the order of £155m over ten years from 2026-27 is expected to unlock at least a four-fold economic return on investment, as well as efficiency savings for UK and global researchers, and the potential for research innovation and studies that have not previously been possible – underpinning a future in which both people and planet thrive.
Diversity and inclusion matter to us.
Our vision is of a future where both people and the planet thrive. Diversity is one of our core values and we strive to build a workplace where everyone feels a sense of belonging. All new staff who join us learn about the importance of diversity and inclusion to the Museum and how to contribute to creating an inclusive environment.
We know we have more to do, but we are committed to ensuring that everyone who works at the Museum feels they can thrive and feel valued and respected.
About the role
The Collection Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring collections are accessible, well-organised, and prepared in advance of digitisation activities. Working closely with digitisation teams, curators, and collection managers, you will help scale up operations for the accessibility and transparency of important scientific collections.
This position is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a nationally significant programme of work during a key phase of DiSSCo UK’s rollout. We encourage applications from candidates (both internal and external) who fulfil most of the key competencies and are willing to support training and personal development opportunities to fill any knowledge gaps.
This role is based within the Museum’s Digital, Data and Informatics (DDI) Department and reports to the relevant Unit Lead (Entomology or Botany).
This is a fixed term role until 31 March 2028.
About you
Are you passionate about making natural science collections accessible to researchers, policymakers, and the public worldwide? DiSSCo UK is seeking enthusiastic and detail-oriented Collection Assistant to help transform the Natural History Museum’s physical collections into high-quality digital records.
We are looking for a proactive and organised Collection Assistant to support the preparation, care, and movement of natural science collections for digitisation.
We are looking for strong communicators with excellent attention to detail, who can team up with both DiSSCo UK and NHM curatorial teams. You will have a pragmatic approach to problem solving and escalating issues in a timely manner. Above all, you thrive in a team environment, are enthusiastic about collections data and their organisation and place collaboration at the heart of your work.
Thriving at the Museum: the way we work
We are proud to work at the Museum and have identified the qualities we all need to embody to reach our shared ambition. This sits alongside the Museum’s values and forms the framework for the way we work.

What we offer
Hybrid working
We are working towards a vision where both people and planet thrive, and nothing gives a greater connection with this, than seeing first-hand, the visitors, scientific research and collections that all of our work is inspired by and working side by side with the teams delivering the visitor experience and events. We also recognise the benefits and flexibility that hybrid working brings. We operate a hybrid working model that requires regular, weekly attendance for this role, with the precise pattern of days on site and worked from home to be agreed with your manager.
Due to the nature of this role the work pattern will be 100% on site.

Our Organisation
The Football Association (The FA) is the governing body of football in England. We are responsible for promoting and developing the game at all levels; from grassroots through to the professional game, The FA Cup and the England Teams, and we have two world class assets: Wembley Stadium and St. George's Park.
Our vision is to inspire positive change through football; our national game that breaks down barriers and unites people from very different backgrounds. Today, we are the governing body of a national community that includes more than 15.7 million football participants, almost 30 million fans and more than 90,000 grassroots teams.
At The FA mental health and wellbeing is a core enabler of everything we do, personally and professionally, on the field and off the field, in how we perform, deliver, and navigate the world around us.
The Role
As an organisation we are increasingly responding to a range of complex mental health related cases that often involve ethical, psychosocial, and occupational challenges that impact individuals as well as presenting, in some cases, increased organisational risk. As we continue to evolve our internal support structures, we recognise the value that an independent expert panel will bring.
The purpose of the Independent Mental Health Expert Panel (IMHEP) is to bring together specialists to provide independent multidisciplinary oversight, consultation, reflective supervision and expert guidance regarding complex mental health cases. The focus of the panel is to support our internal workforce of c.1000 colleagues, for whom we have a duty of care to support and protect mental health and wellbeing.
We are looking for individuals with a strong passion for delivering human centred, multidisciplinary mental health care, and a broad knowledge of the mental health challenges faced by individuals working in high performance sport cultures. We are seeking individuals with a sound understanding of the modern game of football in its various forms, and who have a comprehensive working knowledge of the most up to date policy and research progressions in their respective field.
Key Accountabilities
As a member of the IMHEP you will be required to:
The panel will offer recommendation only and The FA retains operational, legal, clinical, safeguarding and managerial accountability for all decisions.
The MH&WB team will be responsible for coordinating the panel, chairing meetings, recording and securely storing/sharing relevant information, and remain accountable for all case related decision making.
There will be two formal meetings per year where a selection of complex cases will be taken to the panel for review and discussion. Examples of selected cases might include:

Contributions must be constructive and offered for the good of The FA and its employees. Members are expected to promote safe and ethical practice at all times and maintain confidentiality throughout (The panel may decide that confidentiality be broken where there is a legal obligation to disclose information, where there is a risk of serious harm to an individual or others, or where the sharing of information is needed to safeguard an individuals welfare)
Time Commitment
As a minimum, IMHEP members should attend two scheduled meetings per year to review and discuss a selection of identified complex cases. Meetings will usually be face to face on weekdays at The National Football Centre St George's Park, or Wembley Stadium. Additional Panel meetings may be called at the discretion of the Panel Chair. Panel members will also be available for ad hoc consultation on specific matters within the Panel's remit as required. Ad hoc meetings will be kept to a minimum and usually be held online.
Members will receive a set fee for attending meetings, and reasonable expenses incurred in order to travel to meetings will be reimbursed.
Members will be appointed for an initial term of two years, after which they will be eligible to reapply for another two years, up to four times (maximum of 8 years). Members can resign from the Panel at any point with written notice, and The FA can also terminate appointments where necessary.
