Summary Purpose - what you will be achieving:
The Policy Directorate brings together the Academy’s policy, analysis and external affairs functions to address major science and health policy issues in the UK and internationally. The Directorate works as a single, coordinated team, focusing resources on priority areas, applying strategic approaches, generating high-quality evidence and insights, and engaging effectively with government, stakeholders and partners to inform decision-making and influence policy.
You will lead and integrate the Academy’s external affairs function—spanning policy influence, parliamentary and government engagement, and sector engagement through FORUM—to strengthen our reach, visibility and impact.
By drawing on the Academy’s Fellowship, networks and reputation, you will ensure coherence across all external-facing policy activities and play a senior leadership role in delivering the Academy’s transformation priorities. You will position the Academy as an authoritative voice on medical science and health, and ensure that our external engagement is strategic, aligns with the wider organisation’s approach to stakeholder management, and strengthens our influence.
About the Role
Strategic leadership across external affairs
- Lead and integrate policy engagement and relationships to deliver a coherent external affairs strategy.
- Ensure alignment between external affairs activities related to policy and wider Academy strategic priorities (through COO).
- Provide strategic advice on public affairs opportunities, political risk, reputational management and external positioning.
Team leadership, governance and performance
- Lead a unified external affairs team, embedding KPI-driven planning, performance management and evaluation.
- Build capability, progression pathways and consistent project management approaches within the team.
- Manage political risk on behalf of the Academy, ensuring effective governance, narrative discipline and coherent external messaging.
- Ensure cross-Academy planning and alignment between external affairs, policy development, policy analysis, communications and engagement functions.
Strategic programme and portfolio leadership
- Oversee priority influencing programmes, ensuring coherence, sequencing and impactful delivery.
- Provide external-facing leadership for high-profile programmes.
- Support cross-sector initiatives and commissions by providing strategic political insight and external influence.
Political, parliamentary and institutional influence
- Lead the Academy’s UK parliamentary and government engagement strategy, including select committee interactions, parliamentary briefings and relationship building with MPs, Peers and parliamentary staff.
- Position the Academy as an authoritative voice on medical science, policy priorities and the wider health system.
- Build and sustain high-level influencing relationships across parliament and political parties, national bodies, arm’s-length agencies, health systems and sector leaders.
FORUM and commercial
- Oversee and evolve the Academy’s FORUM to align with policy priorities and maximise its impact as a neutral, cross-sector convening space exploring scientific innovation, technological trends and strategic priorities shaping UK healthcare.
- Lead the transformation of FORUM into a leading UK convenor, including membership growth, securing contributions from organisations, and delivering at least six high-quality convenings per year.
- Contribute to income-generating initiatives within approved budgets and ensure external-facing activities support organisational sustainability.
Leadership within the organisation
- As a member of the Academy Leadership Team (Heads and Directors), contribute to organisational strategy, cultural development and the transformation programme.
- Provide senior leadership on organisational measurement, impact reporting and securing external funding.
Financial and governance responsibilities
- Oversee budgets associated with external affairs and related programmes.
- Ensure compliance with governance processes, financial controls and risk management.
Requirements
- Strong track record in public affairs, political strategy or policy influencing, with demonstrable success securing policy adoption and measurable outcomes.
- Experience leading communications, media or public-facing activity in a complex environment.
- Understanding of the UK science, research and public health landscape, including inequalities, national strategies and institutional dynamics.
- Proven experience managing teams, building capability and integrating multidisciplinary functions.

About the team
The Communications team is a small but dynamic group of individuals with strong skillsets across Public Relations, Storytelling (case studies) and Internal Communications. The team is a mix of ex-forces and civilians, and they are always sharing knowledge and expertise with each other.
You will work closely across all directorates within SSAFA, with a focus in South West, to garner information and create compelling marcomms campaigns and activities to raise awareness of SSAFA’s work.

The role of Senior Events and Partnerships Manager will lead the Events and Partnerships Teams to deliver their strategy and plans. Working with the Head of Public Fundraising the Senior Events and Partnerships Manager will carry out a programme of continuous improvement to shape our programme of events for supporters, the local community, our children, young people and their families and retain and grow our partnerships and community fundraising programmes. This work is vital in helping us to achieve our strategic aims of increasing our net contribution and growing our supporter base.
The successful candidate will proactively lead our Events Team to review and overhaul our current events programme before implementing a varied and exciting refreshed programme which will engage new and current supporters as well as the local community and our children, young people and their families. They will also lead our Partnerships Team to develop and maintain and grow long-term, high value and multifaceted community, group and corporate partnerships to maximise income, value and influence for The Children’s Trust. You will lead a small team of events and partnerships managers to secure and manage a range of new and existing partnerships and events (including owned and third party).
Income generation and strategy
- Lead the implementation and delivery of the strategy for the Events and Partnerships teams and work with the Head of Public Fundraising and the teams to develop and review strategies to maximise income from events and partnerships
- Utilise audience insight to develop a broad and innovative range of income generating products to engage new and steward existing partners (including community supporters, businesses, groups and schools)
- Lead the Events team to review and overhaul our current events programme so that we are maximising net income and ROI as well as meeting the needs of our supporters and local community, and building connections and long-term relationships with our events supporters
- Manage partnership pipeline including building opportunities with new businesses to increase the range, value and number of partnerships for The Children’s Trust
- Work with the Partnerships team to implement processes that streamline and integrate relationship management across the team
- Lead the team to maximise growth and opportunities from businesses, community supporters, groups and schools through supporter journeys, stewardship, and cross-sell
- Work across the Retail, Fundraising and Communications directorate to maximise opportunities for contact mapping, cross-sell and support the activity of other teams within the directorate (including but not limited to stock donations, sponsorship of committee-led events, pro bono support, gifts in kind etc.)
Events and relationship management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with both new and existing corporate partners, groups, supporters, senior volunteers and committees
- Work with the Events and Partnerships Managers to create account plans for corporate partners, groups and schools, as well as supporter journeys for community supporters and participants in our events programme
- Work with Events and Partnerships team to ensure that we are maximising opportunities within our relationships, achieving long-term growth and retention of all supporters and working with teams across the directorate to cross-sell other appropriate opportunities for support
- Develop relationships with colleagues across the Public Fundraising Team, wider directorate and organisation to ensure that opportunities for engagement, integration and promotion of events and partnerships are maximised and publicised
- Bring the Events and Partnerships teams together to ensure that we are seizing opportunities to integrate the programmes, for instance through corporate sponsorships of events, employee volunteering or participation, donated goods for raffles and auctions, match funding and more

About the role
We’re looking for a proactive and organised temporary Research Officer to support the delivery of Childre with Cancer UK’s 2026 grant round.
The role will support research grant management, peer review coordination, Scientific Advisory Panel meetings and research communications, helping ensure funding processes run smoothly and effectively. The post holder will also support portfolio audit and research landscape activities, providing an opportunity to gain insight into a charity funded medical research and the childhood cancer research sector. The role would suit someone with strong organisational skills and in gaining experience of research funding within a national medical research charity.
Role purpose
To support the Children with Cancer UK research programme to ensure our research grant rounds run smoothly and efficiently and that our research is communicated effectively.
Main duties and responsibilities
Research Application Review
· Support the administration and coordination of research grant rounds and funding activities
· Assist with peer review processes, including identifying reviewers, allocating peer reviewers for applications with support from the Head of Research and Research Officer, and sending out invitations and reminders by email to ensure timely external review of grant applications.
· Maintain accurate tracking systems, spreadsheets and records relating to applications, reviews and panel activities

Scientific Advisory Panel Meeting Administration

· Support on other aspects of the meeting administration process as required
Research Impact and Analysis
· Support background research, data gathering and funding landscape reviews to inform research activities

· Support in maintaining accurate records of funded projects, outputs and strategic themes
· Provide examples of grant impact and aid in translating these for communications work as needed
Other
- The post holder will be working in a developing environment, and they will therefore be required to undertake other appropriate duties as necessary for the efficient operation of Children with Cancer UK’s research activities.

About ShowerBox
ShowerBox provides free mobile shower services for people experiencing homelessness and hygiene poverty – offering dignity, care, and a safe space for anyone who needs it. About the role
We are seeking an experienced membership engagement professional to plan and deliver dynamic programme of activities for our Fellowship. Informed by insight gathered through a recent Fellows’ survey, you’ll help shape a more connected and active membership, ensuring activities align with the RSE’s mission of “knowledge made useful”.
Working closely with Fellows and colleagues across the organisation, the Membership Engagement Officer will plan and deliver a varied programme of events, networking, and engagement opportunities. You will also collaborate with the Communications team to develop targeted, meaningful content that strengthens relationship and encourages participation.
This is a new and exciting role focused on building a culture of active engagement. You’ll convene and support an advisory group, evaluate the impact of activities, and continuously refine the programme using data and feedback.
About you
You will bring:
- A minimum of 3–5 years’ experience of delivering membership engagement activities in a similar context
- Proven experience of strategically planning engagement in response to insight
- An understanding of membership organisations, professional and/or interdisciplinary networks
- Experience of working with a CRM system (Customer Relationship Management)
- Strong collaborative and communication skills

About us
Parallel is a small charitable initiative with big ambitions. Our mission is to increase the number and diversity of excellent young mathematicians. We are a Good Thinking project (registered Charity Number: 1147404).
Founded in 2023 by Simon Singh MBE and Dr Junaid Mubeen, our online Parallel Academy supports highly capable students to excel in maths, by providing them with structured programmes that develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills beyond the curriculum. We currently support more than 10,000 students through the Academy, around 1000 of whom receive highly targeted support through weekly, small-group online tutorials.
We are at an exciting phase in our journey, with plans to expand tutoring to 5000 students over the next four years. Our students are motivated and ambitious. Our maths programme takes place outside of school hours, yet students have an average attendance above 95%. All of our work takes place online and is subject to safeguarding and data protection policies that are reviewed periodically to reflect up-to-date best practice.

The purpose of this role
We are seeking an experienced Head of Operations to join and help lead our committed and energetic team. This role is pivotal to achieving Parallel’s growth ambitions while maintaining the quality of service we are renowned for. As a senior leader, you will be a lynch pin of our core team and will make a real difference to the life prospects of thousands of young students.
On a practical level, you will coordinate and drive our core programmes, with oversight and accountability for their smooth, day-to-day delivery. You will also line-manage two full-time administrators (this may increase as the team expands), overseeing and supporting their work across communications, data and operational delivery.
We have established several processes and tools for delivering our programme effectively and the ideal candidate will have a sharp eye for process improvement and opportunity. You will need to understand and consolidate our current best practices, but also identify ones that need to be adapted or enhanced as we look to scale up.
This role is offered initially as a fixed-term contract for 12 months, though we have every intention to extend the position longer term should the appointment prove successful.
A note on working hours
This is a fully-remote role. As part of your contracted hours you will be required to regularly do some work during evenings and weekends (approx 5-8 hours a week). You may occasionally need to step in at short notice, outside of standard working hours, to support and resolve urgent operational issues.
There will also be periods when there is a higher workload (e.g., during student admissions cycles), so you may be required to offer some flexibility in working longer - and then shorter - hours week to week. Time off in-lieu is provided for additional hours worked.
In general, you will have significant autonomy in how you structure your working week, provided you ensure that our core operational needs are covered within the whole team.

On a typical day you will be fielding queries from parents, managing the logistics of 200+ tutorials a week and ensuring tutors are fully supported. Oversee the smooth day-to-day running of our Tutorial and Webinar Programmes, ensuring that sessions proceed as planned, and that any issues - from tutor cover needs to student absence requests - are swiftly and effectively addressed.
