About the role:
We understand that a spinal cord injury can be devastating, but we believe it shouldn’t prevent anyone from getting the most out of life. And we’re here to help make sure that can happen. The role of Data and Systems Manager is a new one, and reflects the growth and diversification of how we reach our audience and offer them support. We want to reach everyone affected by spinal cord injury across the UK. To do that, we know we need to make best use of our data and systems to make informed decisions and offer the right support at the right time.
As our first Data and Systems Manager, you will have the opportunity to bring your own creativity and help shape the role. Reporting to the Data Protection Officer but working across the whole organisation, you will oversee and constantly improve our data and how we use our systems; whilst seeking out new ways for us to develop and improve how we work. This is an entry-level role suitable for someone who would like to gain experience of programmes and grant management in the international women’s rights and development sectors. You may have studied in a relevant field or have equivalent work or lived experience. You will have a collaborative and hands on mindset and commitment to feminism, anti-racism and social justice.

Role Purpose
The intern will provide general support to the programmes and learning team, including with administration of programmes and grant compliance, partner communications, logistics and (online) event organisation. Depending on the strengths and interests of the selected candidate and the needs of Womankind, the intern will also have the opportunity to lead on some specific projects or tasks and to work with colleagues from other departments.
Responsibilities
- Administrative grant management support, including:
- Receipt and acknowledgement of grant applications

- Review of narrative and financial reports
- Keeping updated records of grant information, including data entry

Reporting Structure
This role sits within the Programmes and Learning (P&L) team, which is part of the broader Policy, Programmes and Learning Team (PPL). Media Defence is a charity that helps journalists defend their rights. We support independent media, journalists and bloggers who are under legal threat by making sure that lawyers are available to defend them. We engage in strategic litigation to improve the regulatory environment for media freedom, make grants to organisations in various countries to run media defence programmes, support individual journalists facing legal action by covering their lawyers' fees, and build the capacity of the lawyers and organisations we work with on issues of media law. Media Defence was set up in 2008 and has established itself as a leader in the field.
Role Summary
The Grants Officer plays a key role at Media Defence, administering the grants that Media Defence makes to partner organisations, helping assess grant applications, and helping with communications via social media and through other channels.
As Grants Officer, you will also manage and administer Media Defence’s financial grants and non-financial support to journalists facing legal action and identify new potential grantees.
You will be flexible and creative, have exceptional communication skills and a good understanding of the realities faced by lawyers and journalists operating in various regions of the world, including under repressive regimes.
Main Responsibilities
Grants Management:
- Manage Media Defence’s grant support work
- Manage Media Defence’s block grant and individual emergency defence grant application processes, including assessment of applications and project proposals, proposal development, preparation of final recommendation for approval by Board and others
- Manage grant award process, including contracting, setting of KPIs and reporting requirements
- Monitoring of awarded grants, including tracking developments in litigation, assessment of partner/grantee reports and grant compliance; financial oversight of grants and grant budgets; provision of additional support as may be required by grantees
- Ensure smooth running of Media Defence’s grant making and administration of Media Defence’s grants database
- Act as lead contact in relationships with grantees throughout the process

- Undertake and support partner / grant assessment /evaluations and country mapping visits as may be required

Overall Description

Grassroot Soccer (GRS) is a rapidly growing adolescent health organization that leverages the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilize at-risk youth in developing countries to overcome their greatest health challenges, live healthier, more productive lives, and be agents for change in their communities. Since 2002, GRS programs have reached 13 million young people in over 60 countries with life-saving HIV prevention and sexual and reproductive health information and services. Grassroot Soccer is looking to continue scaling its impact via partnerships over the next five years.
The Grassroot Soccer Partnerships (GP) team stewards GRS relationships with a wide range of partner organizations globally. The GP team supports these organizations to integrate the GRS model into their adolescent health strategies and coordinates the remote and in person technical support to these organizations to increase their capacity to deliver GRS interventions. This technical assistance includes but is not limited to program design, product development, monitoring and evaluation, Coach development, program optimization, youth engagement, and research.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee Grant Management across all Priority Partnership Geographies (40%)

From grant kickoff stage to grant close out, ensure Program Managers (PMs) for priority partnership geographies (Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Zimbabwe) execute grants and meet deliverables on time and on budget

In the Register Enrichment team, our role is vital as we improve the quality of the information we hold about our donors on the register, to provide transplant centres with comprehensive and detailed options when searching for donors for their patients, allowing them to make better, faster choices, which ideally will lead to better outcomes for our patients.
You will do this by contacting existing donors on our register and asking them to provide us with a blood or swab sample for us to do further testing. You will communicate clearly with the donors by phone, text message and email, ensuring they understand the purpose of our testing and answering any queries they may have.
You will also communicate with donors to determine availability if the originally selected donor is unavailable at the time that they had been found to be a potential match. We then offer these donors as an alternative to transplant centres if the original donor cannot go ahead.
You will also speak to people who want to be tested for their relatives who need a stem cell transplant and facilitate this for them in a timely manner.
