The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.
The Sutton Trust is at a pivotal moment in its development. For nearly three decades, we have been the UK’s leading voice on social mobility, working tirelessly to break the link between socio-economic background and life chances. Today, that mission is as urgent as it has ever been. Despite pockets of progress, social mobility in the UK remains low by international standards, with deep inequalities in education, access to professions, and regional opportunity continuing to limit life chances and economic potential.
We are seeking a Trustee with policy expertise who shares our commitment to fairness, evidence, and long-term change. We value diversity of thought and experience, and we are keen to hear from those who can help us navigate an evolving political landscape and leverage our research to challenge systemic barriers, ensuring our voice remains the most influential in the national drive to transform social mobility.

- Leveraging their professional networks and expertise, enhancing the charity’s credibility and influence, ensuring our research translates into meaningful systemic change

- Contributing to regular reviews of the Trust’s own governance
- Ensuring the Trust complies with its governing documents, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations
In addition to the above statutory duties, each Trustee should use their specific skills, knowledge and experience to contribute to the Board’s decision-making, and dedicate sufficient time to carry out their responsibilities effectively. This may involve sitting on Board Committees, scrutinising board papers, leading discussions, focusing on key issues, providing advice and guidance on new initiatives, or other issues in which the Trustee has special expertise.
Trustees aim to support a specific member of the SLT based on their skills and experience or may participate in appropriate subgroups, e.g., Alumni Leadership Board, Education Advisory Group, (Development) Board meetings, etc.

Commitment: ~4–6 hours per week (Shared across the team / Highly Flexible)
Status: Conception to Launch Phase
The Mission
We have the vision and now we need the Engine.
YCAS (Youth Counselling and Advice Service) is a startup in its purest form. We are assembling a high-impact Project Team to work alongside our Founder and Trustees to handle the "heavy lifting" of the next 12 months. This isn't just about giving advice; it’s about doing the work that opens our doors to Ealing’s young people.
The "Launchpad" Agenda
As part of the Project Team, you will divide and conquer the critical milestones of a charity startup.
You will work on:
- The Foundation: Assisting the Board with Charity Commission registration and drafting our first governing documents.
- The Blueprint: Helping to build the "Service Model"—what does a typical day at YCAS look like? How do young people refer themselves?
- The Hub: Researching and scouting for a safe, accessible physical space in Ealing to call home.
- The Voice: Creating our initial "Launch Brand," social media presence, and local community outreach plans.
- The Safety Net: Helping the Safeguarding Trustee develop robust, youth-centered policies and procedures.
- The Fuel: Assisting with initial small-scale fundraising, grant research, and local business partnerships.
Who We’re Looking For

We need:
- Organisers: People who love a spreadsheet and a "To-Do" list.
- Communicators: Creative writers or social media whizzes.
- Networkers: People who know Ealing and love talking to local partners.
- Problem-Solvers: Individuals who aren't phased by the "startup" hurdles of a new organisation.
Volunteer-Proofing: How We Work Together
- Modular Tasks: We won't dump a whole project on you. We break things into "bite-sized" missions that fit your schedule.
- The Power of the Pack: You’ll never work alone. You’ll be part of a supportive team that shares the load.
- Defined Launch Date: This role is focused on the conception-to-launch phase, giving you a clear sense of beginning, middle, and end.
What You’ll Gain
- Startup Pedigree: The rare experience of building a charity from a blank page.
- Skill Diversification: Experience in governance, operations, marketing, and fundraising.
- A Legacy: A seat at the table for the birth of a service that will support thousands of young people for years to come.
How to Join the Team
Please send a short emailwith your CV and a Covering Letter, telling us which part of the "Launchpad Agenda" excites you most and what skills you’d love to contribute. No long forms—just a conversation to see if we’re a match.

BE A FOUNDING VOICE: Help Us Build YCAS from the Ground Up!
Role: Founding Trustee (Voluntary)
Time: ~8 hours per month (Highly Flexible)
Location: Newham, East London for monthly Trustee meetings, the rest of the hours can be done from home
The Vision:
In Newham, young people are facing unprecedented pressures. We are at the "Day Zero" concept stage of creating YCAS (Youth Counselling and Advice Service)—a temporary name for a permanent mission. We are building a safe, vibrant "hub" where 11–25-year-olds can find free counselling, art therapy, and guidance without barriers.
Why We Need You (The "Startup" Reality)
We aren’t a polished machine yet; we are a seed. As a Founding Trustee, you won't just "oversee"—you will architect. This is a rare chance to shape a charity's DNA, from its legal structure to its very first clinical session.
What You’ll Do (Your Impact)
- Architect the Foundation: Work with our Founder to move from "concept" to "registered charity".
- Strategic Blueprinting: Help set our mission, values, and 3-year growth strategy.
- Governance & Safety: Ensure we are "gold-standard" for safeguarding and ethics from the start.
- Champion the Cause: Use your networks to build the partnerships and funding we need to open our doors.
- Listen & Lead: Ensure the voices of Newham's young people are baked into every decision.
Who You Are
You don’t need a long list of previous board roles—we value passion and perspective over a "perfect" CV. We are looking for:
- Visionaries: You enjoy the "blank page" and aren't afraid of the hard work required for a startup.
- Community Lovers: You care deeply about Newham and its youth.
- Collaborators: You are thoughtful, reliable, and a great listener.
Bonus Skills (We have specific seats at the table for):
- The Pilot (Chair/Deputy): To lead our meetings and keep us on track.
- The Guardian (Safeguarding): To keep our young people safe.
- The Strategist (Treasurer/Finance): To build our financial health.
- The Connectors (Fundraising & Partnerships): To help us find the resources to grow.
- The Specialist (Therapist/Clinical): To ensure our support is world-class.
What’s In It For You?
- Total Influence: Your fingerprints will be on a service that could save lives.
- Leadership Growth: Gain rare "founding board" experience with full induction and support.
- Community: Join a warm, driven team of "do-ers".
The Commitment (Volunteer)
- 8 hours per month: Includes one Board meeting and some remote prep work.
- Flexibility: Most work is digital, with occasional in-person meet-ups in Newham.
Ready to build something beautiful?
Apply by sending your CV and a Covering Letter, telling us why you want to help YCAS take flight.
YCAS: Designed by Newham, for Newham's future.
To provide free, confidential, youth-led counselling and support that meets young people where they are — emotionally, culturally, and practically.

Role: Volunteer Project Manager
Commitment: ~8–12 hours per month (Flexible / Remote with local Ealing presence)
Status: Startup Phase (Pre-Launch)
The Mission
We have the vision. We have the Founding Board. Now, we need the Architect.
YCAS (Youth Counselling and Advice Service) is currently a concept in development. We are looking for a volunteer Project Manager to lead the charge in taking us from "big idea" to a "live service" that supports young people aged 11–25 in Ealing.
Your Startup Mandate
In this "Day Zero" role, you won't just be managing a project; you’ll be building the project’s engine. You will work directly with our Founder and Founding Trustees to:
- Design the Launch Roadmap: Create and lead the master project plan, including timelines, milestones, and resource needs for a successful launch.
- Coordinate the Founding Team: Act as the "central hub," keeping our Founder, Trustees, and early volunteers aligned and motivated.
- Drive Tactical Execution: Bridge the gap between the Board’s high-level strategy and the day-to-day tasks needed to open our doors.
- Manage Risks: Identify potential "startup bumps" early—like funding gaps or legal hurdles—and develop creative solutions.
- Streamline Systems: Introduce simple, effective tools (like Trello or Slack) to keep our communication lean and efficient.
Who We’re Looking For
- The "Startup Mindset": You thrive in the "blank page" stage and enjoy creating order out of chaos.
- The Organiser: You have professional or volunteer experience in project management (Prince2, Agile, or Lean experience is a bonus but not essential).
- The Communicator: You can translate a founder’s dream into a checklist that volunteers can actually follow.
- Local Passion: You care about Ealing and want to be a part of its youth-support legacy.
Volunteer-Proofing: Our Commitment to You
- Scope Clarity: We won't expect 40 hours of work. We need focused leadership, not "busywork".
- Empowerment: You will have the authority to run the project on a day-to-day basis within agreed board tolerances.
- Support: You’ll have direct access to the Founder and a Board of Trustees ready to back your decisions.
- Flexibility: We work around your professional and personal life.
What’s In It For You?
- Founding Credit: You will be the person who "launched" YCAS—a powerful addition to any professional portfolio.
- Leadership Growth: Rare experience managing a charity from its literal inception.
- Impact: Seeing a service open its doors because of the roadmap you built.
How to Apply
Please send your CV and a Covering Letter (max 1 page) explaining why you are the right "Architect" to help YCAS take flight in Ealing.
To provide free, confidential, youth-led counselling and support that meets young people where they are — emotionally, culturally, and practically.

Background for Citizens Advice Salford’s Chair of Trustees:
Citizens Advice Salford is looking for a new chair for our board of trustees. The service is an independent charity, employing 35 people and benefiting from the support of about 70 highly trained volunteers. We are a full member of the National Association of Citizens Advice, our membership organisation, which supports our work.
Our chair plays a critical role in leading both the board and the organisation, as well as in representing the Salford service within the broader Citizens Advice movement. They will also provide strategic leadership and support the service’s chief executive.
The service provides advice to about 18,000 people each year, and is regulated by various bodies. Our offer is primarily through face to face contact, telephone advice, web access and we are looking at what new digital approaches such as AI can do for us.
We hold the specialist advice giving quality mark. Citizens Advice Salford has a strong reputation as a campaigner for change, for fighting against poverty, lobbying and campaigning on behalf of our clients, together with working across Greater Manchester with our colleague local citizens advice services.
Financially we have a range of contracts with public bodies such as the Council, together with a range of other grants and funding for specific projects.
The current chair is reaching the end of her six year term, but will still be a member of the board. It is a strong board consisting of ten people, with a diverse range of skills and experience.
If you would like to have a more general discussion about the role please feel free to contact the current Chair, or the Chief Officer. Contact details are available on our vacancy page via the apply button.

How much time do you need to give?
Trustee boards usually meet in the evenings and you’ll likely need to give two or three hours, six times a year and you may need to attend other meetings if you’re involved in specifi c projects, or meet with volunteers and staff occasionally within Citizens Advice Salford. We can be fl exible about the time spent, so come and talk to us.
Valuing Inclusion
Our volunteers come from a range of backgrounds and we particularly welcome applications from disabled people, people with physical or mental health conditions, LGBT+ and non-binary people, and people from global majority communities.
