A recognised ESOL qualification, such as those listed on the TESOL website, is essential (e.g. TEFL or CELTA) or equivalent experience
Verbal and written communication skills in English and either Spanish and/or Portuguese
A flexible and enthusiastic person who is confident working in a multicultural and multilingual environment
An empathetic approach to working with beneficiaries whose needs may vary or change over time

Become a Helpline, Text & Email Listening Volunteer in Bristol
Sift has been supporting people affected by self-harm for 40 years. Our wonderful team of volunteers provide valuable, non-judgemental listening to a community that often faces stigma, misunderstanding and a lack of support.
For this training, we're recruiting women-identifying Bristol-based volunteers to work across our helpline, text and email services on our women-run Thursday shifts. These volunteers work from our office, located in the city centre. We will be recruiting volunteers of all genders to work across other weeknights when we next train, so please do keep checking our site for upcoming opportunities.
Our volunteer training course for this opportunity takes place online over Saturday 18th, Sunday 19th, Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th October 2026. Volunteers must attend all four dates to complete the training.
Why volunteer?
By volunteering with us, you'll:
Develop valuable knowledge around self-harm, trauma, and mental health and transferable skills in active listening.
Meet supportive, like-minded peers on shift, as well as at our quarterly Volunteer Days where you'll receive additional relevant training.
Get support from our coordinators and volunteer team through supervision and reflective practice, ensuring you're always emotionally and practically supported in the work you do.
Develop a gentle, transformative approach to mental health support that can be applied elsewhere in life.
Transform the lives of an overlooked and misunderstood community.
What's it like being a volunteer?
When you join our team, you’ll take part in our four-day in-person training course. The training is an opportunity to meet new people and learn the valuable skills you’ll take with you into the work.
Working on the service, you’ll answer calls, texts and/or emails from people impacted by self-harm and offer them confidential, emotional support to understand their own experiences and make decisions that are right for them.
Every quarter, you’ll meet a group of your peers to discuss volunteering and have a safe and confidential space to reflect on the work.
Who can volunteer?
We welcome volunteers of all backgrounds and life experiences. You may have your own experiences of self-harm or mental health challenges or be keen to learn more about how to support others through these experiences.
You don’t need previous listening or counselling experience, just an open mind, a commitment to the role, and a willingness to learn.
We're looking for anyone who wants to offer meaningful support, and can listen with empathy and an understanding that everyone’s situation is unique. We're keen to recruit volunteers who are flexible, adaptable, and open to new learning experiences.
What happens now?
After you submit the form, we'll get in touch to arrange a chat if we feel you'd be the right fit for our services. We have limited training spaces available and may only be able to respond if your application is successful. If you don’t hear back from us this time, we recommend following us on LinkedIn or checking our website periodically to look out for training opportunities later in the year.
Practical details:
An Enhanced Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) check will be required for this role, which will be paid for by Sift.
We ask that volunteers commit to a year on the service after completion of training. If you're looking for a shorter commitment, this may not be the role for you.
You must be available on the training dates mentioned above, and available for one evening shift per week on Mondays and/or Thursdays.
Please note that only applications made using our online form will be considered.
We focus on improving support and knowledge, whilst working to sift out the causes, stigma and misinformation around self-harm.
The client requests no contact from agencies or media sales.

We are seeking dedicated and compassionate Volunteers to join our drop in group in Eastbourne that take place on the last Wednesday of the month 10.30-12.00 in Alice Court Care Home BN21 2BQ . This role is ideal for individuals looking to make a meaningful impact in the community while gaining valuable experience.
The Say Aphasia charity provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia; a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury like a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public. It is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence.
Aphasia occurs due to injury to the brain such as a stroke. It affects access to language, resulting in difficulties following conversations, speaking, reading and writing. People’s language can be affected to different degrees so not everyone’s aphasia looks the same. Imagine for a moment not being able to verbally order a coffee or ask for a bus ticket. This may be what life could look like for someone with aphasia. Aphasia is a lifelong condition and means that the person living with aphasia, their friends and family will need to adjust to a new way of communicating to overcome barriers. This may mean having to write or draw things instead of speaking. Due to the damage in the brain, people with aphasia may find it difficult to process conversions as quickly as before. Aphasia frequently results in loss of employment and a reduced social network, leading to isolation for the person living with aphasia.
Say Aphasia are looking to welcome new volunteers to help out at the group.
Volunteering for the charity is very rewarding. The training and support ensures that the volunteers learn and enjoy their time with the charity. By giving your time to people with aphasia, you will be improving their quality of life. Many of the members attending the groups live alone, or have minimal social interactions. Having a regular drop-in group to meet others with similar experiences of living with aphasia, vastly improves their mental health and well being. As a volunteer, you can help the members to communicate with each other, help to organise activities, or help out with teas and coffees. Say Aphasia offers a warm welcome to volunteers. To be part of the team, contact or fill in an application form.
Join us as a Volunteer Assistant and contribute your skills while gaining valuable experience in a supportive environment!

No one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. St John Ambulance teaches people first aid so they can be the difference between life and death, and you can help us do this.
We need people who have a passion for helping others, care about their communities and want to make a difference, supporting them to become safe and more resilient by enabling our volunteers and staff to have the right equipment and resources to do the job. As an Operational Support Team Member, you’ll support St John Ambulance in deploying equipment to events and activities within your community, as well as support the maintaining of equipment to ensure networks are properly resourced.
Through volunteering as an Operational Support Team Member, you’ll get a huge sense of satisfaction and pride providing essential resources to our medical and education teams. It’s great for you, great for your community and great for our nation, and it requires only a small commitment of your time.
