Safeguarding volunteer volunteer roles

Community Engagement volunteers help to raise awareness of the support available for deaf children and their families through engagement with community and voluntary groups, and/or faith-based groups and/or other support organisations. This role will help us to better support communities, in order to build trust and ensure that any barriers to support are understood and overcome.

About you

• We particularly welcome applications from people who have lived experience of a particular community, in this case South Asian communities in Bradford, and an understanding of the potential barriers faced by those communities 

• Knowledge of a prominent language used in the community beyond English, such as Urdu, Punjabi, Bengali, or Hindi, would be an advantage but is not essential

• At different locations within your local community in the Bradford area

Tasks will be varied depending on the needs of the community. As examples, they could involve:   

• Engaging with community groups, faith-based groups and/or other support organisations 

• Providing information to families about deafness and signposting them to appropriate support  

• Supporting with the planning of events and activities aimed at bringing families together  

• Supporting us to understand the needs of deaf children and their families in your community  

We also ask that you:

• Understand the boundaries of the role and ask for support where appropriate

• Provide evidence to demonstrate the impact you make in your community through volunteering

At Doorstep Library, we’re dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children who need our support.

With 1 in 4 children in the UK leaving primary school unable to read or write properly, we recruit and train in-person and online volunteers to introduce children from under-resourced areas to the pleasure of reading.

What’s Involved?

As a Doorstep Library reading volunteer, you’ll visit the same families via Zoom every week with eBooks to share with the children and encourage their love of reading.

You will:

• Handpick eBooks from our online portals based on the children’s age, interests, and reading level
• Join families via Zoom with your volunteer partner for 20-minute reading sessions  
• Make notes after the session to keep track of how the child/ren are progressing

Our unique home-based approach allows our volunteers to build trusting relationships with families, helping them to connect with the community and equip them with the skills they need to succeed later in life.

When and Where?

You can be based anywhere in the UK to become a Doorstep Library online volunteer.

• Time commitment: One evening a week (Regular Volunteer), one evening every other week (Semi-Regular Volunteer) or once every 3 weeks (Stand-In Volunteer) during school term times
• Hours per week: 2
• Days: Our projects run on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays from 4:30pm – 6:30pm

Independent Visitor Volunteer 

Our Independent Visitor Volunteers provide consistent and supportive relationships to children ad young people in care, offering emotional support, companionship, and guidance through shared activities and time together.The Independent Visitor plays a vital role in helping the young people build confidence and feel secure while enhancing their personal, social, and cultural development. 

As an Independent Visitor Volunteer in England, you might: 

• support the child/young person to experience enriching activities that contribute to their personal and cultural development

• engage in activities such as pursuing hobbies, meeting for meals, or socialising in a community setting

• listen to and support the young person, fostering a sense of safety and trust

• help the young person develop social skills and increase their involvement in their community

• develop a positive and lasting relationship, ensuring the young person feels valued and supported 

You will need to be over 18 years old and be living in the UK. Please note that the Independent Visitor Volunteers generally volunteer at evening and weekends due to the children’s and young person’s availability.

The Say Aphasia charity provides support groups across the UK for people with aphasia; a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury like a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350,000 people in the UK but is little understood or known about by the public. It is the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia for people with aphasia; helping them to adapt to their new way of life and regain their independence and confidence.

Aphasia occurs due to injury to the brain such as a stroke. It affects access to language, resulting in difficulties following conversations, speaking, reading and writing.

Volunteers will support the running of the group with communicating, and will have the opportunity to utilise their communication skills and IT knowledge to take a register of attendance.

Responsibilities

• Provide companionship and support to individuals, particularly those living with asphasia.
• Assist in organising activities that promote social interaction and engagement.
• Communicate effectively with participants, ensuring their needs are understood and met.
• Help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for all participants.
• Collaborate with other volunteers to enhance the group.

Qualifications

• An understanding or knowledge in aphasia is desirable but not essential (training will be given)

Say Aphasia is launching a brand new support group in Bromsgrove and we are looking for enthusiastic, compassionate volunteers to help run it.

About the Group

Aphasia is a communication disability, usually caused by a stroke or brain injury, that affects a person's ability to speak, read, write, and understand language.

The Say Aphasia Bromsgrove Group provides a safe, welcoming, and relaxed environment where people with aphasia can meet others, practise their communication skills, rebuild confidence, and reduce the isolation that can often accompany aphasia. It is a vital lifeline for our members.

What We Need from You

We are seeking a volunteer nurse or care manager to join us onboard The Jumbulance for a Pilgrimage to Lourdes in September and October  (25 September - 2 October or 16 October - 23 October)

Your role:

This role is ideal for a nurse or appropriately trained care manager who enjoys working as part of a team, supporting others, and using their professional skills to make a real difference.

Before the trip, you’ll review passenger care records with the group leader and complete an initial risk assessment on arrival. During the trip, you’ll carry out morning and evening checks, along with ad hoc support as needed. 

• Review and support pre‑trip care assessments for allocated traveller
• Lead and coordinate care provision during the trip, including managing care rota's 
• Administer or oversee medication management
• Provide personal care and clinical support as required
• Work collaboratively with volunteer carers, personal carers, and the Trip Leader
• Participate in safeguarding, risk awareness, and incident reporting
• Support travellers to attend activities, meals, excursions, and social time
• Contribute to creating a warm, inclusive, enjoyable atmosphere for everyone​

We welcome volunteers with professional care experience, including:

• Registered Nurses 
• Paramedics or other clinicians
• Senior carers with experience leading care teams
